*What Is the Church?*

Every member of Christ's body is filled and enabled by the Holy Spirit to go and make disciples.

Colossians 1:18

‘And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.’

When most people hear the word church, the first thing they think of is a certain type of building. But it’s so much more than that.

In Matthew 16:18, Jesus Christ said, “I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

He had something much greater in mind than a mere architectural structure. He was referring to the whole body of Christ, which is composed of all believers.

The church began on the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came and anointed a group of Jesus Christ’s followers (Acts 2:1-47).

And it has continued ever since then as the Lord has been adding more believers—“living stones”—to create “a spiritual house for a holy priesthood.” 1 Peter 2:5,

The church is not merely a place for social action or fellowship, though these are important aspects of its ministry.

Rather, the church is the entire body of Christ, corporately and individually filled and enabled by the Holy Spirit to carry out the task designated by Jesus Himself.

In other words, the church’s purpose is to bring people to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ and to make disciples, instructing them and growing them up in the things of God (Matthew 28:19-20).

This week, spend some time asking the Lord what role you should be playing in the ministry of the church.

*Amen. Morning. Blessed Day.*

*Take control of your thoughts*

‘Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;.’

2 Corinthians 10:5

Your mind is the battlefield where victory or defeat is decided. That’s why Paul writes, ‘We lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ.’

You have a choice: either you lead your thoughts, or your thoughts will lead you. Either you take your thoughts captive, or your thoughts will take you captive. Where do thoughts come from? Everywhere.

If you spend quality time with God each day in prayer and the Scriptures, your thoughts will be guided by God. If not, your thoughts will be guided by the world around you.

You don’t have to accept every thought that comes into your head. Instead, you should measure each thought against the standard of Scripture, which calls for obedience to Christ.

Here is a practical example: if someone hurts your feelings, make a decision right then and there that you won’t be upset with them for days on end.

That only gives Satan the opportunity to plant seeds of bitterness (see 2 Corinthians 2:11).

Instead, you can reject negative thinking and refuse to let it drain you of your peace and joy. The same is true when you are tempted.

The best way to conquer a wrong thought is to replace it with a right one. As you renew your mind with God’s Word each day, your thinking will change and begin to line up with Scripture.

Then, day by day, godly boundaries around your thoughts will be established and reinforced.

These limits will not only keep you out of deception and defeat but help you to live a more enjoyable, godly life.

*Anchors for your soul (2)*

‘Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.’

Acts 27:24

Second, anchored by God’s plan and purpose. The second anchor in a time of crisis is found in Acts 27:24, where Paul quotes God’s angel: ‘Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar; and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you.’

In other words, ‘You’re on board this ship because I have a purpose for your being here. And my eternal purpose for your life is greater than this temporary storm.’

Have you discovered your God-given purpose yet? You’re not here on earth simply to take up space; God has a specific plan for you.

The storm you’re caught in right now is just a temporary setback. Absolutely nothing can change God’s plan for your life unless you choose to disobey Him. And yes, you can do that.

But the Scriptures teach that no outside person or force can change God’s plan for your life or alter His divine purpose as long as you’re willing to say, ‘Lord, I want to do your will.’

As surely as God told Paul, ‘You must stand trial before Caesar; and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you,’ He is saying to you, ‘I will bring you through this storm.’

When you focus on your God-given purpose, He empowers you to overcome your problems.

That’s why Paul wrote: ‘I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us’. Philippians 3:13-14.

*God’s Patience*

God is slow to anger and gives us time to repent, but He loves us too much to let us continue in sin.

1 Timothy 1:12-16

‘This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.’

1 Timothy 1:15

Just as a toddler has to learn obedience, God’s children also must learn to walk in His ways.

He takes pleasure in watching us do what is right and wants to help us when we go wrong. Therefore, He is patient and allows us time and room for mistakes.

Paul appreciated God’s patience. His life demonstrated that because the Father is slow to anger, unbelievers have a much greater opportunity for salvation (1 Timother 1:16).

In Romans 2:4, Paul affirms that our heavenly Father’s kindness and mercy lead to repentance. But in the next verse, he warns those with stubborn hearts that they will experience judgment.

Let’s look at the nation of Israel. In the Old Testament, they repeatedly experienced this painful truth. They turned away from the Lord and did evil in His sight by worshipping idols.

Eventually, He’d withdraw His protection until they would cry out and return to Him. Ultimately, even when the Lord allows calamity to reach His children, it is still drenched with His love and purpose.

If there is unconfessed sin in your life, ask God to forgive you and help you turn from it. Then thank Him for His patience and lovingkindness.

*Amen. Morning. Blessed day.*

*Overcoming Inadequacy*

God will always provide everything you need in order to accomplish His will.

2 Corinthians 2:14-17

‘Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.’

2 Corinthians 2:14

At one time or another, we’ve all dealt with feelings of inadequacy. Maybe it’s because we lost our temper with our spouse, missed an important work deadline, or were too afraid to say yes to an opportunity at some time.

How did you feel afterwards? Maybe you were frustrated with yourself or felt as if you didn’t measure up.

In today’s passage, Paul asks a question that points to this common insecurity: “Who is adequate for these things?” (v. 16).

Here’s the good news: We are inadequate—but God isn’t. And when we trust Him as our Lord and Savior, we become His children and He gives us His righteousness (John 1:12; 2 Corinthians 5:21).

He empowers us and has promised to lead us “in triumph in Christ” (2 Corinthians 2:14).

But unless we believe Him and step out in faith, we’ll never experience the life He has planned for us.

Feeling inadequate isn’t a sin, but using inadequacy as an excuse is. When God calls us to do something that feels beyond our abilities, we have two choices: We can focus on Christ and proceed in triumph or focus on ourselves and withdraw in defeat.

It’s really a matter of faith. God will always empower us to do what He asks us to accomplish.

This doesn’t mean we’ll do everything perfectly, but each step of obedience is a victory that He will bless (Psalm 128:1-2).

*Amen. Morning. Blessed day.*

*The blessings of battle*

‘Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.’

1 Timothy 6:12

When you commit your life to Christ, you switch sides. Now you’re up against three things. The world with its pressures, values, and agenda. The flesh, with its impulses and weaknesses. The devil, who is out to defeat you.

But God would never allow us to get into a fight we couldn’t win, so let’s consider three blessings of battle.

1) It teaches you to live at high alert. It was when Samson slept that Delilah shaved his head and robbed him of his strength. It was when the servants slept that an enemy sowed weeds among the wheat and threatened their harvest.

2) It’s a sign of spiritual progress. When Israel entered the promised land, thirty-one kings and seven nations had to be conquered. Plus giants!

They had to take it one city at a time and one giant at a time. And when Jesus Christ becomes Lord of your life, He will address the unsurrendered areas of your life, and He will deal with them one at a time.

And the battle will be harder and last longer when it comes to your stubborn areas. You know which ones they are, right?

Be encouraged. God won’t give up on you: ‘He who has begun a good work in you will complete it’. Philippians 1:6.

3) It’s an indication of your value to God. You are a seed capable of producing a harvest for God. That’s why you’re a target of Satan. He is after the deposit of God that’s within you.

So, keep fighting the good fight of faith, knowing that by God’s grace, you will win.

*Good evening*

*Why church is good for you*

‘For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.’

Psalm 84:10.

Jesus Christ attended church regularly. ‘He went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath’ (Luke 4:16). The apostles also went to church on a regular basis: ‘They worshipped together at the Temple each day’. (Acts 2:46).

And David loved God’s house. He said, ‘A single day in your courts is better than a thousand anywhere else! I would rather be a gatekeeper in the house of my God than live the good life in the homes of the wicked’ (Psalm 84:10). So, do you love God’s house?

You should, because there you will hear His Word explained, find strategies for living, discover your spiritual gifts, and form relationships that will sustain you in the hard times. Where else can you find all that?

Yale University conducted a study confirming that people who go to church regularly are happier, healthier, and live longer than those who don’t.

The survey found that church attendees had lower blood pressure, less stress, and greater immunity to disease, whereas non-churchgoers in the group had a shortened life span roughly equal to that of cigarette smokers.

One of the interviewers asked an eighty-year-old woman, who happened to be running on a treadmill at the time, what her secret was. She said, ‘When you walk with God you have purpose, so you live longer. And you have peace with God, so you live better.’

Think: if you could find all that in a pill, how much would you pay for it? And would anybody have to force you to take it? No? Okay – then make sure you’re in church!

*Gifts From God*

In times of hardship, take a moment to marvel at the evidence of God's love and care all around you.

James 1:12-18

In today’s passage, James writes, “Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow” (v. 17).

Have you ever taken a moment to marvel at the abundance of blessings in your life? The air you breathe, the sun that warms your face, and the love of family and friends are all tremendous gifts.

Everything we enjoy has been freely bestowed on us by a loving Creator who doesn’t ever change—who never gives us cause for doubt or uncertainty.

Our lives, on the other hand, are constantly shifting, and we will find pleasant times interspersed with periods of hardship and sadness.

Thankfully, we can always rely upon our God, whose good gifts are meant to remind us of His unchanging nature.

Even when we face pain and adversity, we can look for the Father’s love and mercy in our life, recognizing each breath we take, each relationship we enjoy, and each sunrise we witness as evidence of His presence.

God’s gifts are perfect and precisely designed to sustain us in a way that fills our soul.

Let’s receive them with a heart full of gratitude and speak of them as a way of testifying to His love.

*Amen. Morning. Blessed day.*

*In a World of Quick, Slow Is Good*

Let's give others—and ourselves—time to learn and grow.

Ephesians 4:14-16

‘That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;’

Ephesians 4:14

Have you ever gotten into the far right lane on the highway so you can move just a little faster—only to have the cars in front of you slow down?

Then you’re stuck between a divider wall on your right and even slower traffic on your left, feeling frustrated and annoyed.

Sometimes we want to treat our spiritual growth like that—jumping into that fast lane to “beat” everyone else to the goal and reach our destination sooner.

We think that by reading a specific book or praying a certain way, we’ll grow more quickly and get to the next thing.

But then the trials of life come, and without a strong foundation—one that’s built over time and with diligence—we quickly become overwhelmed and disillusioned.

In a world of quick, remember that slow growth is a good thing.

Consider today’s passage, where Paul describes believers as children who must “grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, that is, Christ” (v. 15).

We don’t expect children to do everything like adults. It takes time for them to develop the strength, coordination, and intelligence required for “adult” tasks.

When we become Christians, the process is similar. No one becomes a fully mature believer overnight—nor does God expect us to.

So let’s be patient with ourselves, take the time required to “grow up,” and celebrate when we see progress in ourselves.

*Amen. Morning. Blessed day.*

*Stop covering it up*

‘He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.’

Proverbs 28:13

The Bible says, ‘He who covers his sins will not prosper. But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy’ (v. 13).

Could this be the reason you’re not succeeding? Unresolved guilt has the ability to corrode your confidence like acid.

But there is an answer: ‘Whoever confesses and forsakes [his sins] will have mercy.’ Confess it to God! He already knows what you have done – He is just waiting for you to deal with it so He can forgive you and bless you again.

‘God is Light, and there is no darkness in Him at all [no, not in any way]’ (1 John 1:5). The light of God reveals things. When a light is switched on in a room, we can see dust and bugs scattering.

And when God gets involved in our lives, He begins to show us things we may prefer not to see; things we have been hiding, even from ourselves. We’re often deceived, especially about ourselves. We don’t want to deal with our faults, and we don’t enjoy having them exposed.

Privately we feel condemned about them, but at least we feel like they’re hidden. But anything hidden has power over us because we fear it may be discovered.

Refuse to live that way. The best and most liberating thing you can do is to face what God wants to take care of and get beyond the fear of it.

David said, ‘I acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I have not hidden. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and You forgave the iniquity of my sin’ (Psalm 32:5).
