A sad aspect of the Christian life is to see those who were once excited, filled with faith, and motivated by vision, become critical and bitter. I have seen this in many ministers over the years and have even experienced it myself. In His presence is fullness of joy, and when we aren’t ministering and living from a place of joy, it means we aren’t experiencing His presence.
Often our doctrinal positions make us critical of those who don’t share our beliefs. We no longer live to give His love and encouragement, but rather live to pick apart every word that someone utters (or writes). When this happens, I immediately know that the heart of such a person is no longer being fed by God’s grace, but instead has taken on the role of accuser and judge.
Our doctrinal opinions cannot take the place of His love for all. It is His goodness that leads people to God (Rom. 2:4), not our analysis of everything they are doing wrong. The truth shared in love will set people free, not accusations and bitterness.
. . looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled; (Heb. 12:15)
Having been once very dedicated to debate and doctrinal skirmishes, I had an encounter with the Lord that changed my heart forever. I am not God’s policeman. I have been touched by His goodness and I have “seen” His freedom and joy. I have His peace, and I am not going to be moved from that place.
Don’t let others steal your joy and freedom in God. Your most effective influence in the lives of others isn’t how right you are, but how much faith, hope, and love you give.
