*AFTER THE PROPHECY*
_A guide to handling prophecy today_
By Dr Wenjere
True prophecy is a POWERFUL tool through which God empowers His Church. It is a communication of God mind concerning a particular people or situation. Prophecy brings life, love, light, power, hope, deliverance and encouragement. If handled properly, prophecy has the potential to be a blessing and a powerful instrument for divine empowerment.
Some of us received prophetic messages during the convention. It is important that I teach you about prophecy and how to handle prophecy. Prophecy should be handled with maturity and soberness. Remember true prophecy originates from the very throne room of God. Some people have been hurt or backslidden because of lacking understanding of how to handle a prophetic word. Others have become proud and fallen into ruin. The church must operate in the prophetic with understanding:
Prophecy should be tested and discerned carefully:
*1. Discernment is important for every prophetic word.*
Believers are urged to weigh prophetic words rather than accept them blindly. Don’t get over excited about the prophetic word, be sober. The prophetic word should confirm with your spirit. If you are not sure consult your pastor:
1 Thessalonians 5:20–21 — “Test everything; hold fast what is good.”
1 John 4:1 — “Test the spirits whether they are from God.”
1 Corinthians 14:29 — “Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others weigh what is said.”
*2. Confirm the Prophecy with Scripture*
The written Word of God is supreme to any other prophecy you get. Whatever you are told should align with Scripture. One important note is that true prophecy should not leave you in fear A genuine prophecy will never contradict biblical revelation but will harmonize with it:
2 Timothy 3:16–17 — Scripture equips believers for every good work.
Isaiah 8:20 — “To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, there is no light in them.”
Psalm 119:105 — God’s Word is a lamp and a guide.
Galatians 1:8 — Any message contrary to the gospel must be rejected.
*3. Pray for Understanding and Confirmation*
Receiving a prophetic word is a call to faith and prayer. Prayer births the prophetic word. At times the prophetic word speaks of the end and not the process, prayer invites further clarity and spiritual insight. Don’t be lazy and sleep, pray the word into life:
1 Corinthians 13:9 for we know in part and we prophesy in part
Jeremiah 33:3 — God promises to reveal deep and hidden things.
James 1:5 — Ask God for wisdom, and He gives generously.
Philippians 4:6–7 — Prayer brings peace and guards the heart.
Colossians 1:9 — Prayer for spiritual wisdom and understanding.
*4. Act in Faith and Obedience*
Prophecy frequently requires active participation and faith. Without taking action in Faith, prophecy at times becomes unprofitable. One should act in obedience to the word. Obedience is following instructions whether you like it or feel like doing it. If the word is calling for you to forgive, forgive, to give, give, to move, move. Disobedience to God’s instruction can bring ruin (1 Kings 13):
1 Timothy 4:14 — Do not neglect what was given through prophecy.
1 Timothy 1:18–19 — Use prophecy to wage spiritual warfare.
Romans 12:6 — Exercise gifts “according to the proportion of faith.”
Hebrews 4:2 — The Word must be mixed with faith to profit.
James 1:22 — Be doers of the Word, not hearers only.
5. *Wait for Fulfillment in the fulness of God’s time.*
Most prophecies have a divine timeline (kiros). There is usually a process to the prophecy. At times the word will take years, weeks, months or days. The call is to actively wait upon the Lord. The test is usually in the wait, because in that time, God is preparing you. Patience protects you from rushing and forcing things leading to ruin:
Habakkuk 2:3 — “Though it tarries, wait for it.”
Ecclesiastes 3:1 — There is a time for every purpose.
Luke 2:19 — Mary treasured and pondered God’s word in her heart.
Genesis 37–41 — Joseph’s dreams were fulfilled after a long process.
Hebrews 6:12 — Through faith and patience, inherit the promises.
