MISSIONARY MEMORY: FR. ALEX’s 3RD DEATH ANNIVERSARY
Remembering a Bougainvillean Missionary: The Quiet Flame That Burned for the Nation
Three years ago today, the Church lost a gentle shepherd — but heaven received a faithful missionary.
Fr. Alex Garuai, SVD (1962–2023), went home to the Lord on the very day he once gave his life in priesthood — a life poured out completely for mission.
Hailing from the lush and peaceful island of Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, Fr. Alex carried within him the very soul of his people — calm as the mountains, humble as the villages, strong as the ocean, and warm as the island sun. The Bougainvillean spirit shaped him: quiet resilience, deep spirituality, simplicity of life, and a heart that welcomed everyone like family. 🌿
He did not leave Bougainville behind when he crossed the seas — he carried it within him.
When he arrived in Zimbabwe in 2010 as a missionary, he brought more than his suitcase. He brought the gentle strength of Bougainville, the patience of his people, and the quiet faith that defined his life. In missions, parishes, and remote communities, he walked slowly with the people, listened deeply, and served humbly. He learned their language, shared their struggles, and loved them with a shepherd’s heart.
He came quietly.
He served gently.
He loved deeply.
On May 31, 2023, he celebrated his 25th priestly anniversary — twenty-five years of faithful service. That morning, he gave thanks for his vocation. By the afternoon, the Lord called him home. The day he became a priest on earth became the day he entered eternal priesthood.
From the shores of Bougainville to the soil of Zimbabwe, his life became a bridge — a mission of love that crossed oceans, cultures, and hearts.
A Bougainvillean missionary.
A humble servant.
A peaceful presence.
A life given completely for God’s people.
Three years later, his quiet witness still speaks.
His missionary spirit still inspires.
His gentle heart still lives in those he served.
“Precious is the life given for mission.”
Fr. Alex, Your Bougainvillean heart continues to guide us.
Continue to rest in God’s Peace our dear Confrere. ☺️🙏
