We often rely on “bad” people to help us feel superior, valuable and better than. In their absence we are left to deal with our own insufficiency and imperfection. We need “bad” people, otherwise our entire identity and sense of justification collapses.
The Gospel shows us that we are all bad people. We are equal in our wickedness and all deserve death. God, the perfect one who truly is better than, instead of punishing us, took our “badness” on himself and totally paid for our debt on the cross.
Our value no longer needs to be hinged on being better than other people or morally superior to anyone. In Christ we are fully known and fully loved and can now rest in knowing that our identity as children of God is not hinged on our performance but on His goodness and love that were nakedly displayed on the cross.
We are free to forgive and to love and to let go of past hurts as we no longer need them to feel superior to those who hurt us.
