On 16 August 2024, the youth from our Church embarked on an inspiring visit to the JMN Nkomo International Airport in Bulawayo for a career guidance session. The visit was organized with the goal of exposing our young members to the various career opportunities within the aviation industry and to inspire them to pursue careers that align with their passions and skills.
The visit began with an informative session led by the airport's Human Resource Officer Mrs L Zulu. The youth were introduced to the various departments and functions within the airport, including security, fire brigade ,ground handling, air traffic control, and customer service. This session provided valuable insights into the day-to-day operations of an international airport and the range of careers available within this dynamic environment.
Following the operations overview, we had the privilege of engaging with professionals from different fields within the airport.Each professional shared the career journey, the challenges one can face, and the rewards of their respective roles. They also provided practical advice on the educational paths and skills required to succeed in their careers.An interactive Q&A session allowed the youth to ask questions and seek further clarity on the topics discussed. The questions ranged from the technical aspects of aviation careers to the soft skills needed for success in the industry.
After the Q&A session, the group was taken on a guided tour of the airport facilities. The tour included visits to the control tower, baggage handling area, and the runway. The highlight of the tour was a close-up view of a departing aircraft and how the Air Traffic Controllers did their job ie giving it clearance to take off , which left the youth in awe and further fueled their interest in the aviation field.
The visit to JMN Nkomo International Airport was a resounding success, leaving a lasting impression on the youth. The experience broadened their understanding of the diverse career opportunities available in the aviation industry and highlighted the importance of hard work, education, and perseverance in achieving one’s career goals.
