His Lordship Bishop Jethrow Makuwaza as the Chief Shepherd and Local Ordinary of the Diocese led Chrism Mass today for renewal of Priestly Vows and blessing of Holy Oils at Banket Parish.
The Chrism Service (or Chrism Mass) and the Renewal of Priestly Vows are deeply significant events in many Christian traditions, especially in the Catholic Church, Anglican Communion, and some Lutheran Church communities.
✝️ Chrism Service (Chrism Mass)
The Chrism Service is a special liturgy, usually held during Holy Week (often on Maundy Thursday or a nearby day), led by a bishop.
Key Elements:
Blessing of Oils: Three sacred oils are blessed and consecrated:
Oil of the Sick – used for healing
Oil of Catechumens – used before baptism
Sacred Chrism – used in baptism, confirmation, ordination, and consecration of churches
Unity of the Diocese: The service gathered priests and faithful from across the diocese, symbolizing unity with the bishop.
Role of the Bishop:
Only the bishop consecrates the Chrism oil, showing apostolic authority and continuity.
🙏 Renewal of Priestly Vows
During the same service, priests publicly renew the promises they made at their ordination.
These Promises Include:
Faithful preaching of the Gospel
Proper celebration of the sacraments
Living a life of holiness and service
Obedience to the bishop
Why It Matters:
It is a moment of spiritual recommitment
Strengthens the bond between priests and their bishop
Reminds the faithful of the dedication and mission of their clergy
🌿 Spiritual Significance
For the Church:
It emphasizes unity, service, and continuity of ministry.
For Priests:
A time of reflection, humility, and renewal of calling.
For the Faithful:
Encourages prayer and support for priests and the wider Church mission.
