Title: Abide with us: Praying for His Presence when the Night Falls
Scripture: Luke 24:29 – “But they urged him strongly, saying, ‘Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.’ So he went in to stay with them.”

Introduction
Have you ever felt like you were walking in the dark, even though the sun was still up?
In Luke 24, we find two disciples walking the seven-mile road from Jerusalem to Emmaus. Their world had shattered. The one they believed to be the Messiah had been crucified. As they walked, a "stranger" joined them, opening up the Scriptures until their hearts began to burn within them. Yet, as they neared their destination, verse 28 tells us something peculiar: Jesus acted as if he would go further.
This brings us to our text in Luke 24:29, where the disciples make a desperate, loving plea: “Abide with us, for it is toward evening...” Out of this powerful moment, we find three life-changing truths about how we interact with the presence of God when our own "evening" approaches.

By the help of the holy spirit let's dive in the message with these three key points listed hereunder.
1. *The Test of the Passing Savior*
The text notes that Jesus made as if he would keep walking. Why would Jesus act this way? Is He indifferent to their sorrow? No. Jesus is a gentleman; He never forces His presence where He is not invited.
* The Divine Courteousness: He tests the depth of our desire. He wants to know: Are we satisfied with just a casual conversation on the road, or do we want Him in our home?
* Supporting Scripture: Revelation 3:20 – “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.” Jesus knocks, but we must open.
* The Danger of Complacency: How many times has Jesus drawn near to us in a sermon, a song, or a quiet moment, yet we let Him pass by because we didn't take the time to invite Him deeper?
* Supporting Scripture: Song of Solomon 5:6 – “I opened to my beloved, but my beloved had turned and gone... I sought him, but found him not; I called him, but he gave no answer.” Opportunity can pass if we are spiritually indifferent.

2. The Power of Holy Constraint
Verse 29 says they “urged him strongly”—in the King James Version, it says they “constrained him.” This wasn't a polite, formal invitation. This was a desperate hold. They grabbed hold of Him with their words and wouldn't let Him go.
* Desperation Moves Heaven: God responds to hunger. When we pray with a desperate "Lord, I cannot survive this night without You," He answers.
* Supporting Scripture: Genesis 32:26 – When Jacob wrestled with the angel of the Lord, he cried out, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” This is the exact spirit of the holy constraint.
* Supporting Scripture: Jeremiah 29:13 – “You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.”
* The "Evening" of Life: They urged Him because the day was "far spent" and darkness was coming. When you face the "evenings" of your life—the evening of grief, the evening of financial despair, or the evening of physical sickness—that is the exact moment to urgently constrain the Lord in prayer.
* Supporting Scripture: Psalm 46:1 – “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” When trouble looms like the dark evening, His presence is guaranteed to those who call.

3. The Gracious Response and the Broken Bread
What happens when we strongly urge Him? The Bible says, “So he went in to stay with them.” Jesus never rejects a sincere invitation to abide.
What followed was extraordinary. He sat at their table, took the bread, blessed it, and broke it. In that moment of fellowship, their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him.
* When you invite Jesus into your darkness, He transforms your ordinary table into a place of revelation.
* He turns your blind confusion into spiritual sight.
* Supporting Scripture: Psalm 23:5 – “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.” Even in the presence of darkness and fear, Jesus brings peace and provision to our table.
* Supporting Scripture: John 15:4 – “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.” The ultimate goal of constraining Jesus is to live a life fully abiding in Him.
Conclusion & Application
Brothers and sisters, the day is far spent for many of us. The shadows of this world are growing longer. Do not let this moment pass you by. Do not let Jesus walk past your heart today.
Turn your casual acquaintance with God into a desperate plea. Cry out like the disciples on the Emmaus road, and when the darkness deepens shout-out, Lord, with me abide." Invite Him into your home, your family, and your business, your work and everything that concerns you.
