-FIRST READING-

Behold, we turn to the Gentiles.

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 13:26-33)

In those days: (When Paul came to Antioch of Pisidia, he said in the synagogue,) “Brethren, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you that fear God, to us has been sent the message of this salvation. For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because they did not recognize him nor understand the utterances of the prophets which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled these by condemning him. Though they could charge him with nothing deserving death, yet they asked Pilate to have him killed. And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a tomb. But God raised him from the dead; and for many days he appeared to those who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now his witnesses to the people. And we bring you the good news that what God promised to the fathers, this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus; as also it is written in the second psalm, ‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you.”’

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 2:6-7.8-9.10-12a (R. 7bc)

R/. You are my son. It is I who have begotten you this day.

Or: Alleluia.

“It is I who have appointed my king

On Sion, my holy mountain.”

I will announce the decree of the Lord:

The Lord said to me, “You are my Son.

It is I who have begotten you this day.” R/.

“Ask of me and I will give you

The nations as your inheritance,

And the ends of the earth as your possession.

With a rod of iron you will rule them;

Like a potter’s jar you will shatter them.” R/.

R/. You are my son. It is I who have begotten you this day.

Or: Alleluia.

“So now, O kings, understand;

Take warning, rulers of the earth.

Serve the Lord with fear;

Exult with trembling, pay him your homage.” R/.

ALLELUIA John 14:6

Alleluia. I am the way, and the truth, and the life, says the Lord; no one comes to the Father, but by me. Alleluia.

-GOSPEL

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life.”

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John (John 14:1-6)

At that time: Jesus said to his disciples, “Let not your hearts be troubled; believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And when I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the’ Father, but by me.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

TODAY’S REFLECTION

Jesus is the Journey, the aim and the strength for the Journey. He is the passage, the passage through his Death and Resurrection. Through this passage he goes to prepare a place for us, to open the way for our communion with the Father. Christ is the absolutely new and unique way for humanity to pass over from earthly life to heavenly life. He is the only and definitive way that leads to God; therefore, he Christ, is unique. To reach the home of the Father it is not important to know where it is; but is necessary to know the way, and that way is Christ. He is the way because he is the revelation of the truth of the Father. The way to truth and life can be found only in him

“Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul,”

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 12:24-13:5a)

In those days: The word of God grew and multiplied. And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem when they had fulfilled their mission, bringing with them John whose other name was Mark. Now in the Church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Symeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a member of the court of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. While they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off. So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia; and from there they sailed to Cyprus. When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews.

The word of the Lord

RESPONSOR IAL PSALM Psalm 67:2-3.5.6 and 8 (R. 4)

R/. Let the people praise you, O God; let all the people praise you!

Or: Alleluia.

O God, be gracious and bless us

And let your face shed its light upon us.

So will your ways be known upon earth

And all nations learn your salvation. R/.

Let the nations be glad and shout for joy,

With uprightness you rule the peoples;

You guide the nations on earth. R/.

Let the peoples praise you,

O God; let all the peoples praise you.

May God still give us his blessing

That all the ends of the earth may revere him. R/.

ALLELUIA John 8:12

Alleluia. I am the light of the world, says the Lord; he who follows me will have the light of life. Alleluia.

-GOSPEL

“I have come as light into the world.”

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John (John 12:44-50)

At that time: Jesus cried out and said, “He who believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. And he who sees me sees him who sent me. I have come as light into the world, that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. If any one hears my sayings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. He who rejects me and does not receive my sayings has a judge; the word that I have spoken will be his judge on the last day. For I have not spoken on my own authority; the Father who sent me has himself given me commandment what to say and what to speak. And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has bidden me.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

TODAY’S REFLECTION

In the first reading, we see how a believing community prays and engages in a Spirit-filled and Spirit-led life and mission. The community in Antioch hears God’s voice while listening together in prayer. Among their leaders are Africans: Lucius of Cyrene and Simon called Niger (Black). Guided by the Spirit, they send their best teachers on mission. In the Gospel, Jesus too declares that his entire mission by word and deed comes not from Himself but from His listening to, and responding faithfully to God. This is a lesson for us today, who tend to celebrate ourselves and each other for our diverse “achievements”.

“They spoke to the Greeks also, preaching the Lord Jesus.”

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 11:19-26)

In those days: Those who were scattered because of the persecution that arose over Stephen travelled as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to none except Jews. But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who on coming to Antioch spoke to the Greeks also, preaching the Lord Jesus. And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number that believed turned to the Lord. News of this came to the ears of the Church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. When he came and saw the grace of God, he was glad; and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose; for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a large company was added to the Lord. So Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul; and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the Church, and taught a large company of people; and in Antioch the disciples were for the first time called Christians.

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 87: 1-3.4-5.6-7 (Psalm 117:1a)

R/. O praise the Lord, all you nations.

Or: Alleluia.

Founded by him on the holy mountain,

The Lord loves the gates of Sion,

More than all the dwellings of Jacob.

Of you are told glorious things, you, O city of God! R/.

“Rahab and Babylon I will count

Among those who know me;

Of Tyre, Philistia, Ethiopia, it is told,

‘There was this one born. ’

But of Sion it shall be said,

‘Each one was born in her. ”’

He, the Most High, established it. R/.

R/. O praise the Lord, all you nations.

Or: Alleluia.

In his register of peoples the Lord writes,

“Here was this one born.”

The singers cry out in chorus,

“In you, all find their home.” R/.

ALLELUIA John 10:27

Alleluia. My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord; and I know them, and they follow me. Alleluia.

-GOSPEL

“I and the Father are one.”

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John (John 10:22-30)

It was the feast of the Dedication at Jerusalem; it was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. So the Jews gathered round him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are Christ, tell us plainly.” Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name, they bear witness to me; but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me; and I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish, and no one shall sn**ch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to sn**ch them out of the Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

TODAY’S REFLECTION

Jesus confronts each of us today with these startling words: “I told you, and you do not believe… but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheepfold.” To ‘believe’ in Jesus we need to ‘belong’ to him. In order to ‘belong’ to him, we need to ‘hear’ his voice and ‘know’ him. So, the process of discipleship is knowing, hearing, belonging and believing. This is also the process of ‘Christification’, or becoming another Christ. We see this in the life of Barnabas who was full of the Holy Spirit, and other early followers of Christ, especially those in Antioch, where they were called ‘Christians’ for the first time. Lord, help us to know you, hear you, belong to you and believe in you.

“Then to the Gentiles also, God has granted repentance unto life.”

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 11: 1-18)

In those days: The apostles and the brethren who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcision party criticized him, saying, “Why did you go to uncircumcised men and eat with them?” But Peter began and explained to them in order: “I was in the city of Joppa praying; and in a trance I saw a vision, something descending, like a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came down to me. Looking at it closely I observed animals and beasts of prey and reptiles and birds of the air. And I heard a voice saying to me, ‘Rise, Peter; kill and eat.’ “But I said, ‘No, Lord; for nothing common or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’ “But the voice answered a second time from heaven, ‘What God has cleansed you must not call common.’ “This happened three times, and all was drawn up again into heaven. At that very moment three men arrived at the house in which we were, sent to me from Caesarea. And the Spirit told me to go with them, making no distinction. These six brethren also accompanied me, and we entered the man’s house. And he told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying, ‘Send to Joppa and bring Simon called Peter; he will declare to you a message by which you will be saved, you and all your household.’ As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as on us at the beginning. And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, ‘John baptised with water, but you shall be baptised with the Holy Spirit.’ If then God gave the same gift to them as he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand God?” When they heard this they were silenced. And they glorified God, saying, “Then to the Gentiles also, God has granted repentance unto life.”

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 42:2-3; 43:3.4 (R. See 42:3ab)

R/. My soul is thirsting for you, the living God.

Or: Alleluia.

Like the deer that yearns for running streams,

So my soul is yearning for you, my God.

My soul is thirsting for God, the living God;

When can I enter and appear before the face of God? R/.

O send forth your light and your truth;

They will guide me on.

They will bring me to your holy mountain,

To the place where you dwell. R/.

R/. My soul is thirsting for you, the living God.

Or: Alleluia.

And I will come to the altar of God,

To God, my joy and gladness.

To you will I give thanks on the harp,

O God, my God. R/.

ALLELUIA John 10:14

Alleluia. I am the good shepherd, says the Lord; I know my own, and my own know me. Alleluia.

-GOSPEL

“The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John (John 10:11-18)

At that time: Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. He who is a hireling and not a shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf sn**ches them and scatters them. He flees because he is a hireling and cares nothing for the sheep. I am the good shepherd; I know my own and my own know me, as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. And I have other sheep, that are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will heed my voice. So there shall be one flock, one shepherd. For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life, that I may take it again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again; this charge I have received from my Father.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

TODAY’S REFLECTION

In today's Gospel, Jesus calls Himself the Good Shepherd, transforming the image of a dedicated caretaker into a profound reality of divine love. A shepherd models sacrificial attentiveness, but Jesus reveals a deeper truth: “A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

This was no metaphor. Jesus spoke of His literal death on the Cross, the ultimate act of love for us, His flock. Unlike a “hired worker” who flees danger, Jesus stands and fights for us, even to death.

As members of His Church, we’re called to share His shepherding mission. Through our vocations, we must live with courageous, sacrificial love. Our self-giving should be total—a selfless gift for others.

We imitate the Good Shepherd in daily charity, fidelity to commitments, and steadfast love. This radical love, which won the Resurrection’s joy, reveals Christ to the world and gathers all into His flock.

Reflect: Are we selfless for others’ good, even at great cost? Let’s honor our Good Shepherd by laying down our lives in love for His people.

Good Shepherd, You sacrificed Your life on the Cross for us, Your flock. Your brave act saves us from sin and evil, opening the way to eternal life. I accept Your selfless offering and pledge to imitate it, laying down my life for others so they may know You and share in Your eternal joy. Amen.

THEME OF THE SUNDAY: The Good Shepherd. A shepherd is a guide and a leader and so the fourth Sunday after Easter is called Vocation Sunday: a day of special prayer for those who are “shepherds” in the Church. There is only one “Shepherd” and that is Jesus. We are his flock. Those who belong to his flock recognise his voice. Jesus is also the gate. Those who need to contact his sheep must go through him, must, that is, mold their way of thinking and acting on his. The first and second readings are linked to this theme and show us what Jesus did, which we must imitate.

-FIRST READING-

“God has made him both Lord and Christ.”

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 2.14a.36-41)

[On the day of Pentecost,] Peter, standing with the Eleven, lifted up his voice and said to the multitude, “Let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.” Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?” And Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptised every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children and to all that are far off, every one whom the Lord our God calls to him.” And he testified with many other words and exhorted them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” So those who received his word were baptised, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm23:1-3a.3b-4.5.6 (R. 1)

R/. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.

Or: Alleluia.

The Lord is my shepherd;

There is nothing I shall want.

Fresh and green are the pastures

Where he gives me repose.

Near restful waters he leads me;

He revives my soul. R/.

He guides me along the right path,

For the sake of his name.

Though I should walk in the valley of the shadow of death,

No evil would I fear, for you are with me.

Your crook and your staff will give me comfort. R/.

R/. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.

Or: Alleluia.

You have prepared a table before me

In the sight of my foes.

My head you have anointed with oil;

My cup is overflowing. R/.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me

All the days of my life.

In the Lord’s own house shall I dwell

For length of days unending. R/.

-SECOND READING-

“You have returned to the shepherd of your souls.

A reading from the first Letter of Saint Peter (1 Peter 2:20b-25)

Beloved: If when you do right and suffer for it you take it patiently, you have God’s approval. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. He committed no sin; no guile was found on his lips. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he trusted to him who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.

The word of the Lord.

ALLELUIA John 10: 14

Alleluia. I am the good shepherd, says the Lord; I know my own, and my own know me. Alleluia.

-GOSPEL

“I am the door of the sheep.”

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John (John 10:1-10)

At that time: Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber; but he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the gatekeeper opens; the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” This figure Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers; but the sheep did not heed them. I am the door; if any one enters by me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy, I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

TODAY’S REFLECTION

“By his wounds you have been healed,” says Saint Peter in today’s Second Reading. The shepherd becomes the door of the sheepfold. He risks his life in order to protect his sheep. The predator targets the shepherd who guards the sheep like a door. His life is in danger. He is attacked and killed. He dies to save the lives of the sheep. But a thief runs away when the predator attacks. The sheep get scattered and killed. In Jesus we have the good shepherd who “bore our sins in his body on the tree,” who was wounded and killed to save his sheep. We are that sheep saved by the death of Jesus, our good shepherd. Do we hear his voice and follow his path? Or do we hear the voice of the thief who “comes to kill and destroy?” Lord, help us hear your voice and follow you.

Today’s Rosary: The Luminous Mysteries

Mark, or John Mark, was intimately associated with the spreading of the faith, and the development of the early Church. Born in Jerusalem, he accompanied Barnabas, Paul and Peter in their apostolic journeys. According to an ancient tradition, Mark’s Gospel reflects the preaching of Peter. Considered founder of the Church in Alexandria of Egypt, Mark is specially honoured by the Coptic Christians of that country. His contribution to the establishment of the Church in Africa cannot be underestimated and today we give thanks to God for the gift of faith we have received through Saint Mark.

-FIRST READING-

My son, Mark, sends you greetings.

A reading from the first Letter of Saint Peter (1 Peter 5:5b-14)

Beloved: Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility towards one another, for “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that in due time he may exalt you. Cast all your anxieties on him, for he cares about you. Be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking some one to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experience of suffering is required of your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, establish, and strengthen you. To him be the dominion for ever and ever. Amen. By Silvanus, a faithful brother as I regard him, I have written briefly to you, exhorting and declaring that this is the true grace of God; stand fast in it. She who is at Babylon, who is likewise chosen, sends you greetings; and so does my son Mark. Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you that are in Christ.

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm89:2-3.6-7.16-17 (R. See 2a)

R/. I will sing for ever of your mercies, O Lord.

Or: Alleluia.

I will sing for ever of your mercies, O Lord,

Through all ages my mouth will proclaim your fidelity.

I have declared your mercy is established for ever;

Your fidelity stands firm as the heavens. R/.

The heavens praise your wonders, O Lord,

Your fidelity in the assembly of your holy ones.

For who in the skies can compare with the Lord,

Or who is like the Lord among the heavenly powers? R/.

R/. I will sing for ever of your mercies, O Lord.

Or: Alleluia.

How blessed the people who know your praise,

Who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face,

Who find their joy every day in your name,

Who make your justice their joyful acclaim. R/.

ALLELUIA 1 Corinthians 1:23a-24b

Alleluia. We preach Christ crucified; the power of God and the wisdom of God. Alleluia.

-GOSPEL

“Preach the Gospel to the whole creation. ”

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark (Mark 16:15-20)

At that time: [Appearing to the Eleven,] Jesus said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptised will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.” So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that attended it. Amen.

The Gospel of the Lord.

TODAY’S REFLECTION

Saint Teresa of Avila postulates three prerequisites to spiritual life: Humility, detachment and love. She asserts that “humility situates persons within the realm of right relationships. They are in a place of truth before themselves and before God.” Today’s first Reading exalts this virtue as necessary in our relationship with God. God rewards the humble. Humility does not mean self-depreciation. It is a recognition that all we are and have comes from God. A saint once said that all is grace. If this is our attitude to life, we shall live in peace with one another and enrich one another with the gifts of ourselves. Jesus commissions us to go out and bring his message to everyone, while manifesting the signs of believers, speaking in tongues of love and charity.
