The biblical calendar is a wonderful gift.
Observing the holy days infuses the entire year with sanctity and godliness.
The festivals draw families and communities together and focus their attention on God.
Moreover, each of the biblical festivals uniquely foreshadows the work of Messiah and the plan of redemption.
The appointed times communicate deep spiritual lessons to those who practice them.
Every festival draws us closer to the living God and His holy Son.

Rosh HaShanah I Festival of Trumpets, Day 1

Portion Summary
Judaism celebrates the Festival of Trumpets as a New Year's Day. Rosh HaShanah literally means "Head of the Year" because the first day of the seventh month is regarded as the biblical new year. The festival's main feature is the blowing of the ram's horn trumpet, i.e., the shofar.

Yeshua’s Messengers

We in the Messianic Jewish community are [Yeshua’s] messengers, his ambassadors, his servants, the heralds of his return. We who are so few in number, we are the watchmen on the walls of Jerusalem about whom Isaiah speaks,
“On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have set watchmen; all the day and all the night they shall never be silent. You who put the LORD in remembrance, take no rest” (Isaiah 62:6).
Let us confess our guilt and the guilt of our people, and let us recognize every present difficulty as well deserved. Then let us call on Yeshua that he should again build Jerusalem.

Sorrow and Blessing in the Kingdom

While the Messianic Era will be a time of immense sorrow for the wicked, it will be a time of great abundance and blessing for the righteous.

Heaven and Earth

His glorious throne is in heaven above. As Scripture says, “Look down from your holy habitation, from heaven”

(Deuteronomy 26:15).
But his providence reaches to the earth; as it says, “HaShem looks down from heaven … from where he sits enthroned he looks out on all the inhabitants of the earth”
(Psalm 33:13–14).

In Hebrew, the words for “when you enter” are ki tavo. This Torah portion begins with laws regarding first fruits and tithes. It goes on to discuss covenant renewal, after which Moses recites the blessings guaranteed to Israel for covenant obedience and warns of the curses for apostasy.

Work and Worship

Our forefathers dwelt in the land beneath their own vineyards and fig trees. The work of their fields was their form of worship, and the yield they produced from their trade was consecrated to HaShem.

Ki Tetze When You Go כִּי־תֵצֵא Deuteronomy 21:10-25:19
Portion Summary
The forty-ninth reading from the Torah is called Ki Tetze, which means “when you go.” It is named after the first words of Deuteronomy 21:10, which are “When you go out to battle against your enemies.” Deuteronomy is organized as an ancient Near Eastern covenant-treaty document. Previous chapters of Deuteronomy formed a preamble, a historical prologue, and general covenant stipulations. Chapter 12 began a section of more specific stipulations, and this portion continues with a code of laws. The laws of the Torah are more than just legalese; they are covenant expectations that provide us with God's directions for living life

Spiritual Interest

“We have given up everything and have followed you; what is our recompense?” (Matthew 19:27).
That is what many say when they have made sacrifices for a community or for a mission. They have given time, energy, and money, and they do not want it back. They have gifted it, but unconsciously they demand a high rate of interest. Not interest in the monetary sense but spiritual interest. They want to be loved on account of the sacrifices they have made, and to be appreciated, to be given a position of privilege in the center of things. Everything should revolve around them.

It was not like that in the beginning.

Devarim 5:10 …those who love Me and keep My commandments.
John 14:15 " If you love Me, keep My commandments.
The Polish rabbi known as the Sefat Emet summed up the reason for “keeping the commandments”,
and thereby fulfilling the “will” of HaShem:
“The commandments are called ‘candles’, shining light, by the power of Torah, onto every
deed. There is no good deed that does not contain some mitzvah (commandment).”
I think that this is exactly what Yeshua said!
Matthew 5:16 "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify
your Father in heaven.
When you have “kept a commandment”, the knowledge that you have done the “will” of your Father
in heaven will draw you closer to Him. It brings you “joy” in knowing that you have done the right
thing. It also encourages you to keep the next commandment. Again Yeshua had something to say
about this:
John 15:10 "If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My
Father's commandments and abide in His love. 11 "These things I have spoken to you, that My joy
may remain in you, and that your joy may be full. 12 "This is My commandment, that you love one
another as I have loved you.
Now the opposite is also true. Sin is disobeying the commandments and does NOT lead to “joy”:
1 John 3:4 Whoever commits sin also commits Torahlessness, and sin is Torahlessness.
