Enemies don’t just oppose you. They expose, refine, and position you.
Here’s the role they play biblically:
1. They expose what’s in you.
Deuteronomy 8:2. He humbled you and let you hunger… to know what was in your heart.
Pressure from enemies reveals pride, fear, unforgiveness, and hidden motives you wouldn’t see in comfort.
Psalm 139:23-24. Search me, O God, and know my heart… see if there be any grievous way in me.
2 They refine and strengthen you
Romans 5:3-4.
Suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope.
1 Peter 1:7. The tested genuineness of your faith… is more precious than gold.
David didn’t become “a man after God’s own heart” in the palace. He became it in caves running from Saul.
James 1:2-4. The testing of your faith produces steadfastness.
3 They create opportunity for God to show Himself
Exodus 14:13-14 Pharaoh’s army at the Red Sea forced Israel to see God fight for them.
Daniel 6 The lions’ den only happened because of enemies. That’s where God shut mouths and got glory.
Psalm 23:5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
God doesn’t always remove the table from the enemies. Sometimes He serves it in front of them.
4. They position you for purpose
Genesis 50:20. As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good.
Joseph’s brothers, Potiphar’s wife, Pharaoh’s prison- all enemies in the story. All part of getting him to the palace.
Esther 4:14
Who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?
Haman’s plot was what pushed Esther into her calling.
5. They force you to rely on God, not yourself
2 Corinthians 12:10
For when I am weak, then I am strong.
Psalm 18:39
For you equipped me with strength for the battle.
If everyone agreed with you and cheered you on, you’d never learn dependence on God
But here’s the key:
God uses enemies, but He never calls you to become like them.
