SAINT OF THE DAY
Margaret

Blessed Margaret Pole, born Margaret Plantagenet, was an influential figure in English history. She was the niece of Kings Edward IV and Richard III. Margaret married Sir Reginald Pole, and together they had five sons, including Cardinal Reginald Pole.

After her husband's death, she became the Countess of Salisbury and took on the role of governess to Princess Mary, the daughter of King Henry VIII and Queen Catherine of Aragon.

Margaret was a strong opponent of King Henry VIII's marriage to Anne Boleyn, which led to her exile from the royal court. She was subsequently imprisoned in the Tower of London for two years without facing a trial.

In 1538, after her son Cardinal Pole refused to acknowledge the king's supremacy, Margaret was executed at the age of seventy. Her ex*****on on May 28 was carried out without any legal procedure, and in the same year, two of her other sons were also put to death.

Despite her tragic end, King Henry VIII had once called her "the holiest woman in England." Margaret's unwavering faith and her sad fate resulted in her beatification in 1886. She continues to be remembered as a symbol of courage in the face of persecution and steadfast belief.

SAINT OF THE DAY
Augustine

St. Augustine of Canterbury, formerly a prior, was unexpectedly chosen by Pope St. Gregory the Great to lead a mission to Anglo-Saxon England. At a time when the Saxon invasion had driven Christians into hiding, Augustine's mission was to bring these hidden believers back and convert the new rulers.

Faced with frightening stories about the Saxons' harshness, Augustine and his team nearly abandoned their mission. However, encouragement from Pope Gregory and the Christian marriage of King Ethelbert of Kent inspired them to persevere.

Upon their arrival, King Ethelbert, cautious of magic, chose to meet Augustine and his group outdoors. While he was impressed, he remained wary and allowed them to preach without forcing conversions. Ethelbert's own baptism in 597 led to many of his people willingly embracing Christianity.

As the first bishop, Augustine respected English traditions while promoting Christianity, adapting pagan sites and festivals for Christian worship.

Augustine's success in converting the pagans was greater than his efforts to unite the isolated British Church, which was hesitant to align with Rome. His mission lasted only eight years before he passed away in 605, but his legacy continued.

Celebrated on May 26 in England and May 28 in other regions, Augustine, also known as Austin, left a lasting impact, evident in the names of many places today.

SANIT OF THE DAY
Phillip Neri

St. Philip Neri was born in Florence on July 21, 1515. From a young age, he radiated joy and obedience, earning the nickname 'good little Phil.' Aspiring to a religious life, Philip studied at the Dominican monastery in Florence.

At 18, he moved to San Germano with the expectation of taking over his family's business. However, a profound mystical vision redirected his path, calling him to serve God and the Church. This vision led him to Rome, where he first became a tutor and later dedicated himself to solitary prayer.

Opting out of a promising academic career, Philip chose to help the poor in Rome. He was active in street evangelization and engaged in lively discussions about living a Christian life. To support the needy and encourage spiritual growth, he founded the Confraternity of the Most Holy Trinity.

Philip was ordained a priest in 1551 and spent his days in confessionals and informal talks, reaching people from all social backgrounds.

Philip also established the Congregation of the Oratory, a community where like-minded individuals could gather for prayer and music without taking formal vows or renouncing property. His charismatic nature attracted support from all levels of society, including popes and other saints. Through his efforts to reform the Church with kindness and friendship, he earned the title 'Apostle of Rome.'

He passed away on May 26, 1595, leaving behind a legacy of faith and joy. St. Philip Neri was canonized on March 12, 1622, and is celebrated as the patron saint of Rome, the US Special Forces, humor, and joy. His feast day is observed on May 26.

BLESSED VIRGIN MARY MOTHER OF THE CHURCH

The Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, celebrates how Jesus entrusted Mary's divine motherhood to the entire Church, encompassing all believers. In 2018, Pope Francis chose the Monday after Pentecost—the day the Church was founded—as the date for this memorial.

The title "Mother of the Church" has a long history. In 1980, Pope John Paul II encouraged the faithful to honor Mary with this title. Earlier, on November 21, 1964, Pope Paul VI, concluding the third session of the Second Vatican Council, proclaimed Mary as the "Mother of the Church."

In 1975, the Vatican introduced a special Mass in her honor, though it wasn't yet part of the official liturgical calendar. The title "Mother of the Church" has also been embraced by early Church Fathers like Saint Augustine and Saint Leo the Great, as well as by Popes Benedict XV and Leo XIII.

Finally, on February 11, 2018, marking the 160th anniversary of Mary's first apparition in Lourdes, Pope Francis made the memorial of Mary as Mother of the Church an official part of the liturgical calendar.
