*JUDGEMENT IN THE HOUSE OF GOD*
*1PETER 4:17*
*For it is time for judgement to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? (NIV)*
Bible interpretation is very important in the spiritual growth of every believer. Most wrong practices and doctrines are the result of poor bible interpretation. One major rule in bible interpretation is contextual bible interpretation. Our opening text has been used to scare many into thinking and believing that when it comes to the Day of Judgment, it will begin with God's people, Christians. Some also use this text when a believer is going through difficult times that they assume it is God’s punishment for a particular sin the person might have committed. Others also believe that believers who live sinful lifestyles are to be judged first before unbelievers. This is not true and cannot be the truth because there is no condemnation or judgment for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Reading the pretext and the post text, Peter's letter was to encourage his fellow Christians that they should not be discouraged or surprised at the painful trial they were going through but that they should rejoice that they were participating in the suffering on account of Christ. Peter then adds for it is time for judgment to begin in the house of God. This judgment here is not a reference to God's final judgment but the persecution they were going through at that time. Peter called the persecution they were going through judgment because they were being judged for their faith by their persecutors. Some were judged and sent to prison, others were killed and abused.
He is saying that today we are being judged and persecuted for our beliefs and if it is very hard to be saved from this persecution, what then will happen to those who refuse our gospel when they face the real judge, God? Can they be saved from God's hand? No, they cannot. According to Peter, those who reject the gospel will experience a more severe judgment than what they faced earthly. Peter was relating their judgment or persecution to their faith to the final judgement of unbelievers. If the church or the family of God is so severely judged or persecuted like this, then what will become of those who do not obey the gospel. Peter was not talking of God’s judgment of believers but the persecution they were facing.
*I will not be judged or condemned on the Day of Judgment because Jesus was judged on the cross on my behalf.*
