*LEARNING WELL*

_Dag Heward-Mills_

*READ: Daniel 9:2-4*

*The cloke that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments. 2 Timothy 4:13*

You can learn how to preach and teach by listening to CDs. I have not been to Bible school and did not have the privilege of being taught how to deliver a sermon. But there are many ways of learning the same thing.

When I was practising medicine, I learnt a little phrase from the surgical department. The phrase is, “Watch one, assist one and do one.” What does this mean? It means that if you want to learn how to perform surgery, you watch one operation, assist one, and then you actually attempt one yourself.

Everyone can learn how to preach by listening to preaching. In fact, the best thing you can do is to listen to other ministers all the time. The prophet Daniel studied what the prophet Jeremiah had taught. The prophet Jeremiah ministered from 685-616 B.C. and the prophet Daniel took over from 616-536 B.C. Daniel said very clearly that he knew what he knew by studying the books written by Jeremiah. Why are you afraid to learn from somebody? Even a great man like Daniel was blessed by another prophet – Jeremiah. Open up your heart and become a learner and receiver. After all, we all learn from somewhere. It is the insecure people who are afraid to show that they learnt what they know from somewhere! Become so receptive that you receive the knowledge of the Word! Open your spirit so that you learn how to preach yourself! Open your heart so that you receive the anointing!

*HONOURING FATHERS*

_Dag Heward-Mills_

*READ: Ephesians 6:1-3*

*A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? Malachi 1:6*

People find it difficult to honour fathers because they feel a father must earn their honour by being honourable. Unfortunately, many sons and daughters are disappointed in the lives of their fathers and mothers.

Many sons think they will do better than their parents have done with money, relationships and other opportunities of life. It is true that most parents fall short of the ideal father and mother. Every parent is a phantom of what he could be.

It is also true that an “imperfect” father may bring a “perfect” man into the world and a good person may bring an evil person into the world. For instance, Hi**er and Stalin had mothers who took them to church. Both Hi**er and Stalin were members of the choirs in their churches. Stalin even attended a Bible school for a period. Obviously, the parents of these mass murderers were Christians and churchgoers. Somehow they brought forth men who would cause the deaths of millions of people.

God knows that many of the parents of “good” people are not “good”. And yet, He gave a blanket instruction that fathers and mothers should be honoured. The obvious moral, financial and marital failings of fathers have nothing to do with the honour that God has commanded us to give to them. If God wants to punish the fathers for their financial, moral and marital sins, He will. That has nothing to do with the honour a child is expected to give to his father. Every father, no matter who he is, is due the honour commanded by God for him.

*VISIONARY*

_Dag Heward-Mills_

*So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:18, NIV*

Faith is the personal trait that makes a person a visionary. “By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured as seeing him who is invisible” (Hebrews 11:27).

A visionary is someone who can see the future. He can see how it is going to work out.

Faith is the evidence of things not seen. Without faith you cannot visualize or imagine a good outcome and a good future. Without faith you will be full of complaints, murmurIng and grumblings. You will never see the great possibilities of what God can do for you. All your calculations will be based on “here and now” because you cannot see the invisible. Moses was a great man of faith. He endured and was successful because he saw the invisible.

Faith is the personal trait that makes a person no longer a fool. “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God…” (Psalm 14:1).

A fool says there is no God. Having faith in God catapults you out of foolishness into wisdom.

Faith is the personal trait that pleases God the most. “But without faith it is impossible to please him…” (Hebrews 11:6).

Somehow, without faith it is impossible to make God happy with you. You need to be positive, you need to think correctly and you need to expect positive things if you are to please God.

*WAITING ON THE LORD*

_Dag Heward-Mills_

*READ: Zechariah 8:21-22*

*And the inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, Let us go speedily to pray before the Lord, and to seek the Lord of hosts… Zechariah 8:21*

We must wait on the Lord, learn our lessons well; in His timing He will tell where to go, what to do and what to say. Pastors and shepherds should make it a point to get away from their busy schedules and wait on God for even longer periods.

Jesus Himself retreated to the wilderness and mountains to pray. Praying for whole days on retreats is a very important aspect of a pastor’s schedule. Waiting actually involves pausing, slowing down and not rushing headlong into things.

The ministry is spiritual from beginning to end.

Full-time ministry always involves prayer and ministry of the Word.

“Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee” (1 Timothy 4:16).

Peter made it clear that his work was not arranging tables nor organizing food for his church members. His duty was to pray and minister the Word.

“…It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables…But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word” (Acts 6:2,4).

*RELATING WITH KINGS*

_Dag Heward-Mills_

*READ: Daniel 5*

*…Daniel was clothed in purple, a gold chain was placed around his neck, and he was proclaimed the third highest ruler in the kingdom. Daniel 5:29, NIV*

There are three keys for relating to kings and other important people. They are:

1. The key of being truthful and honest.

2. The key of being yourself and being real.

3. The key of respecting and honouring kings.

Daniel used these three keys to gain favour. Many people do the exact opposite of the three keys above, get demoted and get thrown out of favour. It is so sad to see people violate these keys over and over again. Instead of being real, honest and speaking the truth, people try to flatter important people. A clever king will see through flattery.

To flatter someone is “to praise the person somewhat dishonestly”. To flatter someone is to play upon his vanity and susceptibility. A clever king will soon see through it all and, instead of getting promoted you will be done away with as a dishonest and dangerous courtier.

Belshazzar was the proud son of Nebuchadnezzar. His father had suffered a serious mental illness as a result of pride. This mental illness, lycanthropy, (from the Greek word lukos, wolf and anthropos, man because the person imagines himself to be a wolf, a bear or some other animal) had not taught Belshazzar to be humble. Instead, he also lifted himself up against the Most High God.

Speaking the truth respectfully to the king did not lead to Daniel’s destruction. It rather led to his promotion.

*MAN’S STATE*

_Dag Heward-Mills_

*READ: Romans 7:14-25*

*The heart of man is deceitful and desperately wicked. Jeremiah 17:9*

Great men of God confessed that they were woefully sinful and inadequate when they came into the presence of God. Isaiah (Isaiah 6:5) Job (Job 42:5-6) Daniel, (Daniel 9:5)

Also, the apostle Paul, at the end of his life described himself as the chief of sinners. He said, “that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief” (1 Timothy 1:15). He called himself the chief of sinners in his very last letter.

Paul called himself a wretched man who could not get rid of his sinfulness. “O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” (Romans 7:24).

“I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. I love God’s law with all my heart. But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin” (Romans 7:21-25, New Living Translation).

*GODLY PATTERN*

_Dag Heward-Mills_

*READ: Titus 2:1-8*

*That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, Titus 2:4*

Churches that work are pastored by pastors of a certain kind.

Churches that grow are pastored by men and women of a certain kind. Since that is also your vision, why don’t you become another of the same kind?

Allos is a Greek word which means another of the same kind. Allos is the way to the anointing. Allos is the key to greatness in God. Allos is the open door for you to enter the things of the kingdom.

I cannot pretend. What I do is what I have learnt from others. What I teach is what has been taught by another of the same kind. How I minister is what I learnt from someone else. I have no shame about pressing hard after others of the same kind. God said it was good so it must be very good. If it is good for God, it is good for me.

It is a good thing that a son must be an allos because it makes him humble. It is a good thing to be an allos because it is a humble thing! It is a good thing to have to humbly learn from those ahead of you. It is a good thing for the young to show respect to those who have made a way for them.

When sons are humble, the blessings of God pass on to the next generation. Not only will there be one great man of God for this generation, but there will be another of the same kind for the next generation. Not only will there be one great singer, but many of the same kind. Everywhere those gifted voices are needed to help the anointing flow, there will be an allos.

*GRACE AT WORK*

_Dag Heward-Mills_

*READ: 1 Corinthians 1:26-31*

*6 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: 1 Corinthians 1:26*

When you remember where you came from, you always recognize that the grace of God has been at work. When you clearly remember where God picked you up from, you will not attribute your cur- rent success to any personal strengths or wisdom. Unfortunately, people tend to black out their past. They make reference to no one and they remember nothing bad or difficult from their background.

Listening to them, you get the impression that they are self-made wise nuts. They do not mention their beginnings, their struggles or their failings. You almost get the impression that you are reading about superman when you are reading about them. Paul said that he took pleasure in his infirmities and distressing situations. Paul told us that he had been beaten, and whipped by unbelievers. This does not sound like superman. Talking about the memories of things God had brought you through will only make you thankful and humble. “Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me” (2 Corinthians 12:9, NASB).

A man of remembrance stays humble through the memory of his different trials and sufferings. It is wiser to share these difficulties than to share your victories. I have noticed how the Lord has helped me to share my uselessness with others. Sometimes I end my sermons on a note of weakness and defeat. I take pleasure in the weakness that is real so that the power of Christ will rest on me.

*SOWING & REAPING*

_Dag Heward-Mills_

*READ: Psalm 126:5-6*

*They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. Psalm 126:5*

A seed to your spiritual teacher is a special seed that fulfils righteousness.

Through this special seed you fulfil all righteousness and complete certain spiritual contracts. Because there is a clear and biblical instruction to minister to your teacher, every time you do so, you fulfil the command to play your part in your teacher’s life, paying him back for his good works in your life.
You fulfil your obligation as a good student and receive the blessings of Galatians 6:7.

Good things are seeds. Sowing seeds makes people rich because the “seed nature” is also deeply embedded in good things.

“Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things. Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap”
(Galatians 6:6-7).

The Bible teaches us that whatsoever a man sows will be reaped. It did not specify what the ‘whatsoever’ stands for. This means that many things can be ‘sowed’ and ‘reaped’.

*PERSISTENT EFFORT*

_Dag Heward-Mills_

*READ: Nehemiah 4:1-6*

*So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work. Nehemiah 4:6*

Diligence is the persistent and relentless effort by an individual to solve a problem, to overcome difficulties and to accomplish great things.

Diligence is the personal trait that makes a person rich. Almost every rich person is a diligent per- son: Proverbs 10:4.

Diligence is the personal trait that makes a person a leader. Most leaders are rich and prosperous because they are ahead of everyone they lead.

“The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute” (Proverbs 12:24).

Diligence is the personal trait that makes a person have ideas that lead to abundance and wealth.

“The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want” (Proverbs 21:5).

Diligence is the personal trait that leads to promotion.

“Seest thou a man diligent in his business? He shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men” (Proverbs 22:29).

In history, diligence is what has created wealthy, successful people. A close look at leaders, millionaires and men of abundance will often reveal lots of diligence and hard work.
