DAILY MASS READING FOR MARCH 20, 2022

THIRD (3RD) SUNDAY OF LENT
Memorial of st. Cuthbert
LECTIONARY 30

First Reading
*Exodus 3:1-8a, 13-15*

Moses was tending the flock of his father-in-law Jethro,
the priest of Midian. Leading the flock across the desert, he came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There an angel of the LORD appeared to Moses in fire flaming out of a bush. As he looked on, he was surprised to see that the bush, though on fire, was not consumed. So Moses decided, “I must go over to look at this remarkable sight,
and see why the bush is not burned.” When the LORD saw him coming over to look at it more closely, God called out to him from the bush, "Moses! Moses!” He answered, “Here I am.” God said, “Come no nearer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground. I am the God of your fathers, “ he continued, “the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob.” Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God. But the LORD said, “I have witnessed the affliction of my people in Egypt and have heard their cry of complaint against their slave drivers, so I know well what they are suffering. Therefore I have come down to rescue them from the hands of the Egyptians and lead them out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey.” Moses said to God, “But when I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ if they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what am I to tell them?” God replied, “I am who am.” Then he added, “This is what you shall tell the Israelites: I AM sent me to you.” God spoke further to Moses, “Thus shall you say to the Israelites: The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. “This is my name forever; thus am I to be remembered through all generations.”

*R. (8a) The Lord is kind and merciful.*

Bless the LORD, O my soul; and all my being, bless his holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.
*R. The Lord is kind and merciful.*

He pardons all your iniquities, heals all your ills, He redeems your life from destruction, crowns you with kindness and compassion.
*R. The Lord is kind and merciful.*

The LORD secures justice and the rights of all the oppressed. He has made known his ways to Moses, and his deeds to the children of Israel.
*R. The Lord is kind and merciful.*

Merciful and gracious is the LORD, slow to anger and abounding in kindness. For as the heavens are high above the earth, so surpassing is his kindness toward those who fear him.
*R. The Lord is kind and merciful.*

Second Reading
*1 Corinthians 10:1-6, 10-12*

I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea, and all of them were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. All ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank from a spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was the Christ. Yet God was not pleased with most of them, for they were struck down in the desert. These things happened as examples for us, so that we might not desire evil things, as they did. Do not grumble as some of them did, and suffered death by the destroyer. These things happened to them as an example, and they have been written down as a warning to us, upon whom the end of the ages has come. Therefore, whoever thinks he is standing secure should take care not to fall.

*Verse Before the Gospel*
Saint Matthew 4:17
Repent, says the Lord; the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

The Gospel
*Saint Luke 13:1-9*

Some people told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with the blood of their sacrifices. Jesus said to them in reply, “Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were greater sinners than all other Galileans? By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did! Or those eighteen people who were killed when the tower at Siloam fell on them— do you think they were more guilty than everyone else who lived in Jerusalem? By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did!” And he told them this parable: “There once was a person who had a fig tree planted in his orchard, and when he came in search of fruit on it but found none, he said to the gardener, ‘For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree but have found none. So cut it down. Why should it exhaust the soil?’ He said to him in reply, ‘Sir, leave it for this year also, and I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it; it may bear fruit in the future. If not you can cut it down.’”

DAILY MASS READING FOR FEBRUARY 13, 2022

SIXTH (6TH) SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Memorial of st. Catherine of Ricci
LECTIONARY 78

First Reading
*Jeremiah 17:5-8*

Thus says the LORD: Cursed is the one who trusts in human beings, who seeks his strength in flesh, whose heart turns away from the LORD. He is like a barren bush in the desert that enjoys no change of season, but stands in a lava waste, a salt and empty earth. Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose hope is the LORD. He is like a tree planted beside the waters that stretches out its roots to the stream: it fears not the heat when it comes; its leaves stay green; in the year of drought it shows no distress, but still bears fruit.
*The Word Of The Lord*

*Responsorial Psalm*
Psalm 1:1-2, 3, 4 and 6
*R. (40:5a) Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.*

Blessed the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked, nor walks in the way of sinners, nor sits in the company of the insolent, but delights in the law of the LORD and meditates on his law day and night.
*R. Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.*

He is like a tree planted near running water, that yields its fruit in due season, and whose leaves never fade. Whatever he does, prospers.
*R. Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.*

Not so the wicked, not so; they are like chaff which the wind drives away. For the LORD watches over the way of the just, but the way of the wicked vanishes.
*R Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.*

Second Reading
*1 Corinthians 15:12, 16-20*

Brothers and sisters: If Christ is preached as raised from the dead, how can some among you say there is no resurrection of the dead? If the dead are not raised, neither has Christ been raised, and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is vain; you are still in your sins. Then those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are the most pitiable people of all. But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits o those who have fallen asleep.

Jeroboam left Jerusalem, and the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite met him on the road. The two were alone in the area, and the prophet was wearing a new cloak. Ahijah took off his new cloak, tore it into twelve pieces, and said to Jeroboam: “Take ten pieces for yourself; the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I will tear away the kingdom from Solomon’s grasp and will give you ten of the tribes. One tribe shall remain to him for the sake of David my servant, and of Jerusalem, the city I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel.’” Israel went into rebellion against David’s house to this day.

The Gospel
*Saint Mark 7:31-37*

Jesus left the district of Tyre and went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, into the district of the Decapolis. And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him off by himself away from the crowd. He put his finger into the man’s ears and, spitting, touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him, “Ephphatha!” (that is, “Be opened!”) And immediately the man’s ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly. He ordered them not to tell anyone. But the more he ordered them not to, the more they proclaimed it. They were exceedingly astonished and they said, “He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

Prayers of Intercession . In intercessory prayer, we pray for the needs of other people and situations.

Be an Intercessor, a divine warrior! When we intercede for others, the Supreme Intercessor (Hebrews 5:7) intercedes for us.

Personal prayer is good but intercessory prayer is excellent. Why? Because God wills it. Jesus invites us to join in his priestly intercession so that a mighty flood of prayer will ascend to the Father’s throne.

Scripture says, 'First of all, then, I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone, for kings and for all in authority, that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity. This is good and pleasing to God our savior, who wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth (1 Tim 2:1-4).

So let's us be praying for one another especially for our brothers and sisters abusing alcohol.

HOLY HOUR
Holy hour is the Roman Catholic devotional tradition of spending an hour in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. The official Raccolta book provides indulgence for this practice. The practice is also observed by many Anglican Churches.
in 1673 Saint Margaret Mary Alocoque stated that she had a vision of Jesus in which she was instructed to spend an hour every Thursday night to meditate on the surfering of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane. This practice later became widespread among Catholics.
The inspiration of Holy hour is Mathew 26:40. During the agony in the garden of Gethsemane the night before the crucifixion, Jesus spoke to his disciples, saying "My soul is sorrowful even to death. Remain here & keep watch with me." (Mt. 26:38) returning to the disciples after prayer, he found them asleep and in Mt. 26:40 he asked peter:
"So, could you men not keep watch with me for an hour?"
The practice of "daily holy hour" has been encouraged in the Catholic tradition. e.g Mother Teresa of Calcutta had a holy hour each day & all members of her missionaries of Charity followed her example.
