LIVING WITH THE MINDSET OF CHRIST!
As a young Believer, my mother gave me a book by Charles Sheldon, which asked one simple question throughout: “What would Jesus do?” Reading that book as a young Christian was life transforming. Today I often still ask myself the same question. Therefore, when recently again reading from Philippians, I was struck by the Apostle’s simple yet powerful instruction: “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 2:5).
At first glance this sounds easy. We often say, “We should live and do like Jesus.” But when we slow down and truly study His life, we quickly realize that living like Jesus requires much more than good intentions. Jesus’ mindset was marked by humility, obedience, and sacrificial love. The very next verses explain that although He existed in the form of God, He humbled Himself and became a servant (Philippians 2:6–8). The King of heaven chose the path of humility. He served others, forgave His enemies, and gave His life for the sake of the world.
This way of living stands in contrast to what the world teaches. Many cultures celebrate power, status, and recognition. Yet Jesus taught the opposite. In the Sermon on the Mount He said, “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth” (Matthew 5:5). He called His followers to love their enemies (Matthew 5:44) and to treat others the way they themselves want to be treated (Matthew 7:12). These are not merely nice ideas. They are the Kingdom principles by which Christ calls His disciples to live. As I have written elsewhere when reflecting on Jesus’ teaching in this sermon, it describes what citizens of God’s Kingdom should look like in everyday life. over my years of active engagement: teaching, coaching, and mentoring, I’ve often found myself quietly observing, listening and watching how others speak and treat one another. I’ve noticed how my students and fellow leaders respond when life becomes difficult.
