Key Text: 2 Kings 4:26 โ "Run now, I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee? Is it well with thy husband? Is it well with the child? And she answered, 'It is well.'"
There are moments in life when everything around us suggests that we should give up. There are seasons when our prayers seem unanswered, our hopes appear shattered, and our hearts are weighed down by burdens too heavy to carry.
But even in these moments, God asks us to have faith beyond what we see. The Shunammite woman could have lost hope; her only son, the miracle God gave her, had died. Still, when asked, "Is it well?" she answered with confidence, "It is well." She did not ignore her pain, but trusted Godโs authority. Faith means trusting God even when problems remain. Often, we declare our faith before we see the miracle.
The story starts with a woman who showed her love for God by helping His work. She saw Elisha was a man of God and convinced her husband to build a room for him to use when he visited. She did not ask for anything in return; she just wanted to help. Because of her kindness, God gave her the son she had always wanted.
This story shows that God sees those who support His work. When you put God first, He takes care of your needs. As Jesus said, "Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you." When you care about Godโs purposes, He provides for you.
But this passage also teaches us that even Godโs blessings can face trials. The son God gave the Shunammite woman suddenly collapsed and died in the field. This makes us ask hard questions:
Why would God let a blessing become a source of pain? Many people think Godโs blessings mean life will be easy, but the Bible shows that even faithful people face hard times. Job lost everything, Lazarus died, Paul was in prison, and Jesus went to the cross. When blessings break, it does not mean God is gone. Sometimes, God lets our faith be tested so His glory can be seen. If your blessings seem broken, stay faithful. The God who gave them can restore them.
When her son died, the Shunammite woman did not give in to despair. She went straight to the man of God. Things did not get better right away; in fact, they seemed to get worse before anything changed.
This is often how God works in our lives. Sometimes, our problems get worse even when we keep praying. We fast, cry, and seek God, but the illness stays, money is still tight, or family problems grow. We should not lose heart. God is never late or powerless. Sometimes, He lets things get impossible so His help is clear. When things get harder, we should pray even more. Persistent prayer shows we trust God, even when we cannot see what He is doing.
There is another lesson here. When her child died, the mother took him to the upper room she had made for Elisha and laid him on the prophetโs bed. This room became the place where she brought her deepest pain. If she had not built that room, she would have had nowhere to take her son.
Spiritually, we all need an 'upper room' before trouble comes. This means having a daily relationship with God through prayer, reading the Bible, worship, and obedience. If we wait until problems come to seek God, we may not be ready. But if we have already made space for Christ, we know where to bring our burdens. Invite Christ into your life now, so when hard times come, you have a place of refuge.
Another important point is how the Shunammite woman chose her words. When Gehazi asked if she was okay, she just said, "It is well." She was not pretending her son was alive. She knew Gehazi could not help, so she did not waste energy explaining her pain to someone who could not fix it.
Often, we tell our problems to others before bringing them to Jesus. Many people can offer sympathy, but only Christ can save. Many can listen, but only Christ can heal. We need to be wise about where we look for help. We should bring every burden, disappointment, and broken dream to Jesus.
One key truth here is that God works long before we notice. The Shunammite woman did not make her son's miracle happen;; God did. In the same way, we did not arrange the blessings we have. We did not choose our families, the chances God gave us, or the dangers He kept us from.
When Christ prepared your blessings, you were not there. If He could bless you without your help, He can also restore what is broken without you fixing it. Sometimes, the best thing we can do is surrender, trust His wisdom, and let Him finish what He started. The God who planned your blessings can also solve your problems.
In the end, Elisha went into the upper room, prayed, and stretched himself over the lifeless child. God brought the boy back to life. This miracle points us to Jesus. Elisha stretched himself over one child, but Jesus stretched Himself on the cross for everyoneโs sins. Elishaโs act brought life to one family, but Christโs sacrifice gives eternal life to all who believe.
At Calvary, Jesus took on our sin, shame, guilt, and death so we could have forgiveness, hope, and eternal life. Every Old Testament miracle points to the greatest miracleโthe saving grace of Jesus Christ.
Today, God asks us the same question He asked the Shunammite woman: "Is it well?" Maybe your health is failing, your marriage is struggling, your money is tight, or your dreams seem gone. The answer is not in your situation, but in your Saviour. If Christ is with you, you can say by faith, "It is well," because the One who started a good work in you will finish it. He has never failed His children, and He will not fail you.
My message today is simple and urgent: do not wait to give your life to Christ. The same Jesus who died on the cross for you is calling you now. Bring Him your broken heart, your fears, your failures, and your burdens. He can restore what sin has broken and give you a new start. Choose Christ today, for "Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation" (2 Corinthians 6:2). May we all leave with strong faith, boldly saying, "It is well!" Amen.
