YOUNG ADULTS REMEMBER FR. BANGWE

Chelston Parish Young Adults will on Tuesday, 7 July 2020 commemorate the memorial for the late priest Fr. John Bangwe SJ who died on 7 July 2019. The commemoration will be held at Our Heavenly Father Parish (Chelston Centre) during 9:00hrs Mass followed by a talk. Fr. Bangwe belonged to the Society of Jesus commonly known as Jesuits. He entered the Jesuit Novitiate on 7 July 2006.

Fr. Bangwe was ordained priest on 27 May 2017 and worked as Chaplain at the Copperbelt University (CBU) in Kitwe. He worked well with the student community and many young people from different sections still speak of the positive impact he made in their lives.

Chelston Parish Young Adults Chairperson Likezo Nyambe had this to say, “Fr. Bangwe was a friend of young people and as Young Adults of Chelston Parish we are indebted to him because he inspired us to start this group”.

“After been inactive for some time and feeling we had grown to be in the youth ministry we decided to have a reunion of all the youths who were active from 2009 to 2013. This reunion was held on 17 August 2017 at Sacred Heart Brothers and Fr. Bangwe was the celebrant. In his homily at the reunion, Fr. Bangwe challenged the youths who had gathered on the day that even if they had grown to leave the youth ministry, the Church needed them to be available and dedicated to God’s work. It was after this reunion we started calling ourselves Young Adults. That is how the group was birthed”, Likezo shared.

The memorial will be celebrated by Fr. Peter Banda SJ who was the best friend to Fr. Bangwe. The Young Adults saw it befitting to ask Fr. Banda to commemorate the memorial with them and the request was made to him earlier in February that upon his return to Zambia, he should grace the occasion. Indeed God has his ways of uniting his chidren and it was only in March when it was communicated that Fr. Banda will stay and work at Our Heavenly Father Parish - Chelston.
