"THE DAY OF PENTECOST"
Acts 2:1-41. It happened 50 days after Jesus’ resurrection, during the Jewish festival of Shavuot/Pentecost.
What happened in the Bible
1. The setting: Jesus had ascended to heaven 10 days earlier and told his disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the “promise of the Father” - the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4-5, 8).
2. The event:
- The disciples were gathered together when “a sound like a violent wind” filled the house, and what looked like tongues of fire rested on each of them (Acts 2:2-3).
- They were “filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues” - languages they didn’t know (Acts 2:4).
- A crowd of Jews from all over the Roman Empire heard them speaking in their own languages and were amazed (Acts 2:5-12).
3. Peter’s sermon: Peter explained this was the fulfillment of Joel’s prophecy that God would pour out His Spirit on all people (Acts 2:14-21). He preached about Jesus’ death, resurrection, and lordship.
4. The result: About 3,000 people believed, were baptized, and the early church began (Acts 2:41).
What it means
1. Fulfillment of prophecy
Pentecost fulfilled Joel 2:28-29 and Jesus’ promise in John 14:16-17. The Holy Spirit was no longer just with a few prophets/kings, but given to all believers.
2. Birth of the Church
This is why Pentecost is called the “birthday of the Church”. Before this, the disciples were hidden and fearful. After receiving the Holy Spirit, they preached boldly and the church expanded rapidly.
3. Reversal of Babel
At Babel, God confused languages and scattered people (Gen 11). At Pentecost, people of many languages understood one message about God, showing the gospel is for all nations.
4. Empowerment for mission
The Spirit gave the disciples power, boldness, and ability to witness “in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). It marked the shift from Jesus’ earthly ministry to the Spirit-led mission of the church.
