The Ecology Experiment explored how pilgrims can be of service to others by tending to nature and the environment around us. They were a group of about 20 who made the trip to Kasisi Agricultural Centre, a centre that trains people on agricultural activities like farming and animal husbandry.
Because of the size of their facilities, and the number of activities they dealt with, it was a bit of a challenge dividing Pilgrims up for placement in the mission's various stations. Besides, they'd already become a family, so splitting them up didn't sound ideal... But we were glad they did! Some of them got to clear out weeds, and till the soil to help plant seeds for a fresh crop, while others got to participate in the full life cycle of the processing of oats in the processing centre, all the way up to packaging the final product in individual boxes. The day was messy, the African sun beat our backs and foreheads tirelessly, and the strenuous labour constantly reminded us of our physical limitations. But pilgrims wouldn't have it any other way.
For those moments in the day, they became people of the earth. Pilgrims were reminded of their God-granted role as stewards of His creation, placed on this earth to not just co-exist with the birds, beasts and trees, but to facilitate their flourishing, and use that too in service of our fellow men. Bonds were forged, and memories were made that we truly believe will last a lifetime. Yes, we are stewards. We are Magis!
