The Bible is not afraid to show that there are all kinds of people in Jesus’ family tree. There are good people, bad people, and people we know practically nothing about. Some were kings and heroes of the faith who were dedicated completely to God. Others, however, were sinners on a grand scale: murderers, prostitutes, and all kinds of unsavory characters. The vast majority were ordinary people, just like you and me.

This is a very hopeful thing for us. First, it means that even though our parents aren’t perfect, God can still use us. Over and over in Scripture, we see bad parents producing good kids. Just because your parents or grandparents weren’t faithful to God doesn’t mean that you can’t be.

Second, it means that God can use anybody to accomplish his will and to make a difference in the world. God didn’t pick the best people in the world to produce the Messiah. Instead, he had a habit of picking people with flaws.

So, if you feel flawed—that’s okay. In fact, that’s even better. God wants people who will depend on him and to be strong where they are weak.

No one who claims holiness is really holy. Those who are registered as holy in the books of heaven are not aware of the fact and are the last ones to boast of their own goodness. None of the prophets and apostles ever professed holiness, not even Daniel, Paul, or John. The righteous never make such a claim. The more nearly they resemble Christ, the more they lament their unlikeness to Him, for their consciences are sensitive, and they regard sin more as God regards it....

The only safe position for any of us to take is to consider ourselves sinners, daily needing divine grace. Mercy through the atoning blood of Christ is our only plea....
