THE STATE OF THE DEAD
When a person dies are they aware of what is happening around?

This question is very crucial and demands answers based on the Scriptures. We are living at a time in which so many teachings have been circulated that are not Bible based and a lot are misled on this matter, but what does the Bible say concerning the nature of a person who is dead?

To understand the state of a person who is dead, we need to understand the way man was created. Lets get to the book of beginnings.

Genesis 2:7 KJV
“And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. ”

From the above passage, we understand that man was created by God, however, before he was created, he never existed. There was never a time when part of him was existing before God created him. God created man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils, the breath of life, and he became a living soul. Mark the phrase A LIVING SOUL. In the Hebrew, Soul is Nephesh which denotes a living being or breath of life or life force depending on the context of the passage. In some other versions it says a LIVING CREATURE OR BEING.
So the Creation equation is:
Dust + Breath of Life=Living Soul.

So what happens at Death?
Let us look at the passage below:

“In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. ”
Genesis 3:19 KJV

The context of the above passage is that Adam and Eve had just eaten the forbidden fruit from the tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil. God had initially warned them that the day they will eat of it, they will surely die. So instead of them obeying the clear command, they listened to the voice of Satan who used a serpent as a medium. Just after eating the forbidden fruit, their innocence departs from them and they realize that they have fallen and are naked. Guilt and afraid, they attempt to hide from God's presence on account of their sin. God comes looking for them and finds them trembling, after calling them to account for their deed. God then issues the consequence of their sin, they will die eventually. They will return to dust for from dust they where taken. God does not say that when they die, a part of them will live on, no, no, no. They will cease to live. Death is the cessation of life and not living in torment.

Let us consider some other passages of Scripture:
Ecclesiastes 9:5-6
“5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. 6 Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun. ”

There you have it friends, the above passage clearly states it is those who are alive like you and me who know that one day they shall die, but those that are dead do not know anything at all.
Ecclesiastes 9:10
“Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. ”

The passage above further adds up that in the grave, one cannot work, because they are no more.

Psalms 6:5 KJV
“For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks? ”

The Psalmist above made it clear that in death, we cannot praise the Lord. Time to praise our God is now while we are alive. The other passage below adds up:

“The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence. ”
Psalms 115:17 KJV.

A question may be asked on the meaning of soul and spirit.
These two words are usually used interchangeably, however one needs to understand depending on the the context. For example, consider the passage below:

“Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. ”

Psalms 103:1 KJV
David is simply speaking to himself to praise the Lord with the essence of his entire being. It does not mean that he is telling a part of him.

Look at the verse below:

“Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. ”
Ecclesiastes 12:7 KJV

This passage tells you and I what happens at Death. We are told that the spirit shall return to God who gave it.
We need to understand what is meant by spirit here.
The Hebrew word for spirit is ruach which denotes air, wind or breath.

Remember in Genesis 2:7, the Lord upon creating man, had breathed into his nostrils the breath of life for him to be a living soul or living being. Therefore, what returns to God is the breath of life or the spark of life from God himself, we can not touch it, feel it or hear it. It is a mystery.
Therefore, with the above evidence, a person who is dead, does not know anything, he or she is just like a dead wood which has no life in it.

Check the passages below also about the soul.

Ezekiel 18:4,7 KJV
“4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die. 7 And hath not oppressed any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment; ”

“The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. ”
Ezekiel 18:20 KJV

The passages above is simply telling you and I that all human beings, that is those living, belong to God, and those that sin shall die.

Simply put, a living soul is a living human being, a dead soul is a dead human being.

What about the dead loved ones who appear in dreams?
We should first understand that we are human beings who may have lost loved ones, whom we had spent time with. These may be our late brothers or sisters, our friends, our spouses etc, it is normal to dream about them once in a while because they were part of us. We have memories of them in our minds. Therefore, the brain can replay those memories in form of dreams. However, when these dead loved ones appear in dreams as comforting us concerning our present situations, even predicting our future, or even telling us that that they are in heaven and watching over us. Then we should know that it is Satan or his demons personating them and appearing to us to deceive us so that we turn away from what the Bible says about the nature of those who are dead.
Look at the quotation below which is a commentary.

He has power to bring before men the appearance of their departed friends. The counterfeit is perfect; the familiar look, the words, the tone, are reproduced with marvelous distinctness. Many are comforted with the assurance that their loved ones are enjoying the bliss of heaven, and without suspicion of danger, they give ear “to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.” GC 552.1

This passage talks about the power of Satan to deceive humanity into believing that the dead can come and appear to the living.
The belief that the dead are conscious, is the foundation of Spiritualism, which is a teaching that the human being possesses something in him which never dies. This lie originated with the devil himself and it is based on the lie that Satan told Eve in the garden of Eden as quoted below:

“And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: ”
Genesis 3:4 KJV

May God bless and enlighten us.

Sunday observance as the Sabbath has no biblical authority. It can only be defended on Catholic principles. Here are some quotations from the Catholic Church Church that support Sunday as there day.

Key Quotations-

Catholic Record (Sept. 1, 1923):

“Sunday is our mark of authority... The Church is above the Bible, and this transference of Sabbath observance is proof of that fact.” -

Father Enright, C.S.S.R.:

“Of course the Catholic Church claims that the change was her act. It could not have been otherwise, as none in those days would have dreamed of doing anything, in matters spiritual, ecclesiastical and religious without her. This act is a mark of her ecclesiastical authority.” -

Catholic sources cited in Revelation Made Simple:

“You may read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, and you will not find a single line authorizing the sanctification of Sunday.”

Summary: The Catholic Church openly acknowledges that the shift from the biblical Sabbath (Saturday) to Sunday worship was an ecclesiastical decision, not a scriptural command.
These statements are often cited in discussions about the authority of Church tradition versus the authority of Scripture.

Here are additional quotations from Catholic sources that acknowledge Sunday observance as a Church institution:

The Convert’s Catechism of Catholic Doctrine (Rev. Peter Geiermann, 1910):

“Question: Which is the Sabbath day? Answer: Saturday is the Sabbath day. Question: Why do we observe Sunday instead of Saturday? Answer: We observe Sunday instead of Saturday because the Catholic Church transferred the solemnity from Saturday to Sunday.”-

Cardinal James Gibbons, The Faith of Our Fathers (1917 edition):

“You may read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, and you will not find a single line authorizing the sanctification of Sunday. The Scriptures enforce the religious observance of Saturday, a day which we never sanctify.”-

Chancellor Albert Smith for Cardinal of Baltimore Archdiocese (Feb. 10, 1920):

“If Protestants would follow the Bible, they should worship God on the Sabbath day. In keeping Sunday, they are following a law of the Catholic Church.”-

Catholic Press (Sydney, Australia, Aug. 25, 1900):

“Sunday is a Catholic institution, and its claims to observance can be defended only on Catholic principles... From beginning to end of Scripture there is not a single passage that warrants the transfer of weekly public worship from the last day of the week to the first.

”Key Takeaway

These statements consistently affirm that the shift from Saturday (biblical Sabbath) to Sunday worship was made by the authority of the Catholic Church, not by direct scriptural command. The Church presents this change as evidence of its authority in matters of faith and practice. The quotation you’re referring to is a well-known Catholic statement acknowledging the Church’s authority in transferring Sabbath observance to Sunday:-

American Catholic Quarterly Review (January 1883):
“Had she not such power, she could not have done that in which all modern religionists agree with her—she could not have substituted the observance of Sunday, the first day of the week, for the observance of Saturday, the seventh day, a change for which there is no Scriptural authority.”

Key Point

This quotation emphasizes that the Catholic Church claims authority to change the day of worship from Saturday to Sunday, and openly admits that Scripture itself does not provide the basis for this change. Instead, it is presented as an exercise of ecclesiastical authority.

Key Insight

All of these quotations reinforce the same point: the Catholic Church itself claims responsibility for transferring Sabbath observance from Saturday to Sunday, and openly acknowledges that this change is based on Church authority rather than direct biblical command.

Never be deceived, happiness is not a destination, its a journey. Don't tell yourself that i will be happy next week or when the moment comes. That perfect moment will never come. Look around yourself, cant you see the blessings God has given you? The bible says "rejoice always." Therefore, arise and make it a rule to be joyful always regardless of the troubles a day may bring to you. Jesus is our source of Joy and happiness.

BY REY CHEHADE

DOES ANYONE HAVE THE RIGHT TO CHANGE GOD’S LAW?

The Roman Emperor Constantine had a problem - how to maintain unity across his far-flung empire. Despite centuries of persecution, Christianity was still growing. Admittedly, Christians were peaceable citizens who worked an honest day and paid their taxes. Who wouldn’t want an emire filled with such good people?

But the pagans feared that the growing Christianity population might revolt and take over the Empire. So, they barred Christians from many occupations and opportunities for advancement. In defense, Christians developed their own communities where they could control their lives. Constantine believed this tension was fostering instability in his Empire.

Then the wily Emperor hit upon an idea that changed the history of both Christianity and the Roman Empire. Why not combine the best features of both religions? In essence, form a new religion, one in which both pagans and Christians could find common ground.

Constantine’s idea won the day. The old pagan gods became Christian saints, pagan festivals were changed to religious holidays, pagan rituals were given Christian explanations, and pagan concepts were blended with Christian doctrines. In the process, Constantine’s catholic, or universal, church was born.

Because the new church was not established on strictly biblical principles, when differences arose in doctrine or practice, they could not be resolved by appealing to Scripture. Instead, Christians appealed to church councils. This eventually became a significant distinction between Constantine’s church and groups considered heretical. “Heretics” were always appealing to the Bible as the final authority in spiritual matters. A safer course lay in trusting a council of experts trained to oversee such matters.

In regards to the Ten Commandments, the church council felt it prudent to modify them. Because pagan temple statuary across the Empire was now representing Christian saints, the second commandment was a bit of an embarrassment, so it was omitted. Then, there was the obvious problem of the 4th commandment with its specific mention of the seventh-day Sabbath.

In A.D. 321, Constantine had decreed that all city dwellers should rest on the day dedicated to the worship of the Sun god. Although not specifically a command to worship, Constantine’s intent was to foster a spirit of harmony between his pagan and Christian subjects. Yet, the majority of Christians still observed the Bible Sabbath of the seventh day. But by A.D. 364, the Church Council of Laodicea forbade the observance of the Bible Sabbath: “Christians shall not Judaize and be idle on Saturday [Sabbath, original], but shall work on that day; but the Lord’s day [Sunday], they shall especially honor, and, as being Christians, shall if possible, do no work on that day. If, however, they are found Judaizing [observing the seventh-day Sabbath], they shall be shut out from Christ.” Logically, the 4th commandment had to be modified to reflect this new Sabbath.

Having eliminated the 2nd, only nine commandments remained; the awkwardness of “a missing commandment” was resolved by splitting the last commandment into two parts, restoring the count to ten.

HUMAN VS. DIVINE AUTHORITY
The Bible prophesied that a world power known as the “little horn” would “think to change times and laws.” Daniel 7:8, 24, 25. In a series of visions, the prophet Daniel was shown a succession of world powers. They were described differently in each vision; but each vision was merely a repeat and enlargement of the previous vision.

Compare Daniel, chapter 2, 7, and 8. Three of the empires were specified. The one that followed the Grecian Empire was not. Out of this fourth beast came the “little horn.” We know from world history that the Roman Empire conquered Greece. The little horn power that arose from the Roman Empire exercised both religious and political powers: this could only be Papal Rome. It was the popes of Rome who for more than a millennium claimed spiritual authority over the citizens of the old Roman Empire.

The Catholic Church honesty maintains and teaches that her authority supercedes the Bible in religious things. Speaking of the 4th commandment: “Sunday is a Catholic institution…. From beginning to end of Scripture there is not a single passage that warrants the transfer of weekly public worship from the last day of the week to the first.” Catholics also believe that any Christian who observe Sunday as “the Christian Sabbath” is accepting the authority of the Catholic Church over the authority of the Bible: “The Protestant says: How can I receive the teachings of an apostate Church? How, we ask, have you managed to receive her teaching all your life in direct opposition to your recognised teacher, the Bible, on the Sabbath question?”

Catholics specifically refer to the change of Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday as “the mark” of their authority to supercede Scripture: “Of course the Catholic Church claims that the change was her act,…and the act is a mark of her ecclesiastical authority in religious things.

THE TWO MARKS OF REVELATION
Those alive when Jesus returns will possess one of two marks described in the book of Revelation. One is described as the Mark of the Beast, Revelation 14:9; the other as the Seal of God, Revelation 7:2,3. Those who receive the Mark of the Beast will show their loyalty to human authority; while those who receive the Seal of God will show their loyalty to divine authority.

Jesus gave a strong rebuke to all who elevate human authority over God’s authority: “Full well ye reject the commandments of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.” Mark 7:9. Furthermore, severe judgment is pronounced upon those who knowingly teach others, by word or example, to break God’s Law. Romans 7:12; Matthew 5:17-19.

In contrast, the Bible commends those who keep God’s law: “Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” Revelation 14:12.

The Mark of the Beast is a symbol of man’s authority and is contrasted with obedience to God’s law.
Sunday observance, by Rome’s own admission, is the Mark of human authority.
Does this mean that all who currently worship on Sunday have the Mark of the Beast? No, but Bible prophecy actually describes a time when the whole world will be forced to participate in Sunday worship upon pain of death. Revelation 13:15-17. Only then will Sunday worship become the Mark of the Beast. Only then will God pour out His wrath on those who fear man than they love God. Revelation 14:9-11.

Honoring the seventh-day Sabbath during those days could cost you your life. But those who love God more than they fear man will be honored with the Seal of God.

It is easy to believe that we can wait until Sunday laws are enforced and then choose to honor God on His holy Sabbath day. Friends, if we find it inconvenient to honor God today, when our lives are on the line tomorrow, it will be harder, not easier. If we desire to be found among those who escape the Mark of the Beast and the wrath of God, we must cultivate a spirit of loving obedience to all of God’s requirements today. “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” John 14:15.

KJV Micah 7:8
8 Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me.

Nothing is apparently more helpless, yet really more invincible, than the soul that feels its nothingness and relies wholly on the merits of the Saviour. By prayer, by the study of His word, by faith in His abiding presence, the weakest of human beings may live in contact with the living Christ, and He will hold them by a hand that will never let go. {MH 182}

The Work of Heart-keeping.

Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. Proverbs 4:23.
Diligent heart-keeping is essential to a healthy growth in grace. The heart in its natural state is a habitation for unholy thoughts and sinful passions. When brought into subjection to Christ, it must be cleansed by the Spirit from all defilement. This can not be done without the consent of the individual.

When the soul has been cleansed, it is the duty of the Christian to keep it undefiled. Many seem to think that the religion of Christ does not call for the abandonment of daily sins, the breaking loose from habits which have held the soul in bo***ge. They renounce some things condemned by the conscience, but they fail to represent Christ in the daily life. They do not bring Christlikeness into the home. They do not show a thoughtful care in their choice of words. Too often, fretful, impatient words are spoken, words which stir the worst passions of the human heart. Such ones need the abiding presence of Christ in the soul. Only in His strength can they keep guard over the words and actions.

In the work of heart-keeping we must be instant in prayer, unwearied in petitioning the throne of grace for assistance. Those who take the name of Christian should come to God in earnestness and humility, pleading for help.... The Christian cannot always be in the position of prayer, but his thoughts and desires can always be upward.7SDA Bible Commentary 3:1157.

To keep your heart in heaven will give vigor to all your graces and put life into all your duties. To discipline the mind to dwell upon heavenly things will put life and earnestness into all our endeavors. Our efforts are languid, and we run the Christian race slowly, and manifest indolence and sloth, because we so little value the heavenly prize. We are dwarfs in spiritual attainments. It is the privilege and duty of the Christian to be increasing in the knowledge of the Son of God, “unto a perfect man.” 8SDA Bible Commentary 3:1157.
