You may know the will of God!
"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2
It’s a wonder just how many different ways we can be pulled to and fro in the world today. The endless feeds of information can inspire outrage, pride, apathy, despair, surprised laughter, shock, and confusion, all before the end of breakfast. What is one to do? But I am encouraged today that we may (we’re allowed to!) discern what the will of the Lord is, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
It’s worth a read of Romans 12 to consider how your mind might be renewed as you discern the will of the Lord, but here are a few highlights. These are, for sure, the will of the Lord! Paul starts with a reminder that we are who we are by grace. What a sweet message, that doing the Lord’s will begins with a gift that we do not deserve, and that we serve in the power of Jesus’ work on our behalf. This mindset should result in a humble harmony between God’s people and the others we encounter. As a body, each of us does the role we’ve been given, supporting one another without pride, “love(ing) one another with brotherly affection (and) outdo(ing) one another in showing honor.”
The verses that follow command us as much as is possible, to live peaceably with all men, showing them the grace that Jesus shows us in “not repaying evil for evil,” feeding our enemies, associating with the lowly, and leaving all vengeance to God. What strikes me here is that, in the context of not being conformed to the world, we are not commanded to keep the people of it at a stiff arm’s distance. Rather, we are to weep with those who weep, rejoice with those who rejoice, and overcome evil with good. Why is this encouraging? It means that to be like God, we have to care for others, and that means that He cares for us!
The will of the Lord allows us a daily reminder of His care for us as we share it with others. This means that the good news that rescued us is still postmarked to this crazy world around us, and that the Jesus who redeemed us can still redeem our neighbors. God's will is a daily reminder of His attitude to seek the lowly, and of His love that draws sinners to Him. As you approach God today, let your mind be renewed in how He graciously drew you into His arms, and His love for those that He still longs to receive as His own. Then you can pray🙏 with Him in the good and acceptable and perfect will that He has for you!
May the Lord’s grace be with you
