BEHIND YOUR BACK

When you hear the expression “behind your back” you know immediately that it means someone is talking about you to other people, and usually it’s not intended for you to hear. But what if people were saying good things about you instead of whispering hurtful gossip? Just imagine how much better this world would be if people only shared things they liked about someone and gave only positive comments. When people say mean things about you, of course it is very hurtful. Now think about how awesome it would be if you talked about God behind His back and told everyone you met just how wonderful He is and everywhere you went, you bragged on God’s goodness, love, and mercy! Of course it’s impossible to “talk behind God’s back” because He sees and hears everything! There are some who believe God only hears them when they pray, but God is capable of listening to the deepest secrets in your heart and there is nothing that God doesn’t know about you! Have you considered how God feels when He hears you talk behind His back? It doesn’t make Him feel good to hear His name taken in vain, or having someone tell off-color jokes, and He certainly doesn’t rejoice when He hears unkind things said about Him. When you truly love Jesus, you can’t help talking about Him and sharing all His goodness and blessings, you want to tell the world what an awesome God He is. And it’s a good thing to remember that when you talk behind God’s back . . . He’s listening!

NO ROOM FOR ENVY

One of the biggest threats to “inner peace” is jealousy. One tiny seed planted in your heart soon grows out of control, and its evil vines choke out every ounce of goodness. The Bible says in Proverbs 14:30, “A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.” And in James 3:16, the warning is clear: “For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.” It’s easy sometimes to look at what someone else has and want it for yourself. You may even think you deserve it more than they do and subconsciously begin to feel angry that you were not blessed in the same way. It could be material things, job status, financial, or even a relationship. But harboring a deep desire for what someone else has will not bring you peace, joy, and contentment. But the most important reason to get rid of all envy and jealousy is because it will keep you out of heaven. God says in Ephesians 5:5, “For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, or covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.” Wow! That’s a pretty powerful reason not to covet! The best way to stomp out the weeds in a jealous heart is to more fully embrace God’s will for your life, accepting that He knows what is best for you and trusting Him to give you the gifts He wants you to have. When your heart overflows with gratitude for God’s blessings, you can’t imagine being jealous over what anyone else has. Learn to be content with the privilege of being who God created you to be, for there is no room for envy in heaven!

HIDDEN TALENTS

You often hear people complain that God skipped over them when passing out the talents. They envy others who have musical abilities, speak publicly, cook, play sports, or have any other talent they don’t have. But everyone has God-given gifts, even if you don’t recognize or use them. It’s dangerous to compare your life with others because it can leave you discouraged, resentful, or even angry, and it will prevent you from being thankful for what you do have. God gives you the talents needed to fulfill His plan for you. In 1 Peter 4:10-11, we’re told, “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies, in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.” And in James 1:17: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights.” God wants you to use your talents to bring Him honor and glory and to bless others. So, instead of being disappointed with what you’ve been given, ask God to show you how to use them. The more you use them, the more He will give. The Bible says in Luke 12:48, “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” Romans 12:6 says, “Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith.” Thank God for every gift and pray for Holy Spirit's guidance to use each one according to His purpose.

SMILING THROUGH THE TEARS

Smiling doesn’t necessarily mean you are happy and everything is going great. It may just mean that you are strong and can keep a cheerful disposition even in the midst of your distress. Smiling through tears can be a sign of strength and determination as well as a way to hide a lot of pain. People are like tea bags - you never know how strong they are until they get into hot water. It’s when trouble strikes that you find your real strength is in Jesus. Often, the smile fades behind closed doors when your body is tired, you’re exhausted from a stressful week, and you’re emotionally drained with no clue how you’ll face tomorrow. But don’t give up, because there is hope! Seek strength from God by claiming His promise in Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” It is with God’s strength that Paul and Silas were able to smile and, yes, sing songs of praise in the midst of the damp, dark dungeon . . . though they were severely flogged, which left them bruised and bleeding. But even as their bodies ached in excruciating pain, Acts 16:25 tells us, “Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.” Wow! Imagine that! And the best part is . . . God will do that for you! He will give you His strength. God knows just what you need to get you through every situation with a heart full of joy so you can smile through the tears, leaning completely on Him for your courage and strength. Isaiah 40:29-31 gives this promise: “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
