Control Your Emotions
Last Sunday, we learnt about building spiritual discipline. This involves training your spirit to have governmental control over your total being. One component of your soul that needs to be governed is that of your emotions. The emotions, a component of the soul, left unchecked, have ruined destinies.
I recently heard a story of a man who allowed his emotions to get the better of him. In anger, he did something that landed him in prison for a long, long time. It made me think, so much life, so much potential, a great future ruined because of one moment of anger, because he did not know how to manage his emotions.
The spirit is the custodian of our destinies. It is the part of us that is in oneness with God. It is the part of us that leads us in the path of right. The spirit should always govern our emotions, our reasoning faculties, our decisions and our bodies. Everything we do must come under the management of the human spirit.
Building spiritual discipline involves going to church even when you feel tired. It involves praying even when you feel sleepy; it involves studying the word of God even when you feel lazy. This investment in the spirit will bless your life and keep you from experiencing certain negative events in life.
In the world, we have financial discipline. We go to work because we want to secure a salary at the end of the month, we eat correctly because we want to be healthy, we go to school and spend long hours in class to build our careers. Well, one other discipline you need is spiritual discipline. Don’t be lazy to go to Church. It has lifelong and eternal benefits.
The Bible says, “no discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it” — Hebrews 12:11 (NIV)
Some of the emotions everyone must watch out for are:
• Anger: People have said or done things that they have regretted because they let anger control them. Don’t say, that’s the way I am. No, change it before it gets you into trouble.
• Over excitement: People have said or done things that they have regretted because they let over excitement control them instead of the “spirit of self-control.”
• Anxiety/Fear: People have missed opportunities because they let anxiety or fear talk them out of an open door instead of faith and power that reside in the spirit.
• Fleshly love (flings): People have ruined their relationships because they allowed moments of compromise; they let feelings develop where they shouldn’t have, often leading to mistakes. True love is a sound decision from the heart, not a feeling.
The emotions were meant to be enjoyed within the confines of proper conduct and etiquette. The emotions were meant to amplify the goodness we feel in the spirit—happiness from joy, confidence from faith, feelings from love, calm from peace.
A spiritually disciplined person enjoys the best of life at all times by reaping from the fruit of the spirit that flows out through the soul and the body God has given us. Invest in your spirit.
