NIGERIAN MEDICAL GRADUATE DIES IN UKRAINE AFTER SUFFERING INJURIES IN RUSSIAN AIRSTRIKE DAYS BEFORE GRADUATION

Nnani Adaobi Marian, a 23-year-old Nigerian medical graduate, has died after spending several days fighting for her life following a Russian airstrike in Kharkiv, Ukraine, just days before she was due to celebrate her graduation.
According to reports, Adaobi was critically injured on June 29 when Russian forces reportedly dropped aerial bombs on the Kholodnohirskyi district of Kharkiv. She was initially treated at a local hospital before being flown to Germany for specialised medical care. Despite the efforts of doctors in both countries, she died on Sunday, July 5.
Kharkiv National Medical University, where she had studied medicine since 2020, described her as a dedicated student whose kindness and determination earned her the respect of everyone around her.
“Nnani Adaobi Marian was a bright, sincere and kind-hearted person. She easily found common ground with people and was distinguished by her thirst for knowledge, hard work and sincere desire to help others,” the university said.
The institution said there had been hope that she would recover, but her injuries were too severe.
“Everyone sympathized, helped and hoped for her recovery, but they could not save her life,” the university added.
The Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office also paid tribute to the young graduate, saying medical teams fought tirelessly to save her until the very end.
During her time at university, Adaobi expanded her medical training through internships at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom and Biruni University in Türkiye, experiences that reflected her commitment to building a career in medicine.
According to reports, she and her friend, Fatima Huseynova, were heading to a graduation photoshoot when the airstrike struck. Fatima died at the scene, while Adaobi was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The attack reportedly left 12 other people injured, underscoring the continuing toll the conflict is taking on civilians across Ukraine.
Adaobi’s death has prompted an outpouring of grief from fellow students, friends and members of the Nigerian community, many of whom say it is heartbreaking that a young woman who had worked so hard to become a doctor lost her life just as she was about to begin the next chapter of it.
What should have been one of the happiest moments of her life ended in tragedy.
