Four Types of Worship
There are many who think that they can worship God any way that they choose, and it still be pleasing unto God. This was not true in the old testament under the law of Moses, and it isn’t true in the new testament under the law of Christ. Let us examine the four kinds of worship that is described in the new testament, and which one is approved of God.
The first type of worship is called “VAIN WORSHIP” referred to by Jesus concerning the Pharisees who had made the commandment of God in vain by their traditions. Jesus quoted unto them from the prophet Isaiah when he told them: “Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying: “These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'” Matt 15:7-9 We are commanded not to abide by the commandments of men which turn us from the truth, but are to abide by the doctrine of Christ and his apostles. Tit 1:14 ff; Acts 2:42; 2 Jn 9
The second type of worship is “IGNORANT WORSHIP” referred to by Paul when he encountered the Athenians on Mars hill. “Then Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious; for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription:” Acts 17:22-23 This is worship offered in the absence of a knowledge of God’s will concerning who He is and how He is to be worshiped. This is what Paul accused Israel of doing when writing to the Romans. “For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God.” Rom 10:2-3 Ignorance is not an excuse to break the commandments of God. It wasn’t then and it isn’t now. Acts 17:30
The third type of worship is “WILL” (SELF-IMPOSED) WORSHIP” referred to by Paul to the Colossians. “Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations — Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle,” which all concern things which perish with the using — according to the commandments and doctrines of men? These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.” Col 2:20-23 This worship, closely aligned with VAIN worship is the result of doing what WE like and WE think is good, but not taught by God in His Word.
The fourth type of worship is “TRUE” WORSHIP referred to by Jesus when speaking to the Samaritan woman at the well. “Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4:21-24
Now, many have been confused as to what Jesus meant when he said, “In spirit and in truth”. Yet, the bible is quite clear concerning its true meaning. Notice the words of Paul when he declared:
“But as it is written: ‘Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.’ But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one. For “who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.” 1 Cor 2:9-16
Therefore, when we worship God in “Spirit” which derives from the exact same word as “Holy Spirit”, we are worshiping as the Holy Spirit taught through the apostles, and not from the wisdom of man.
Secondly, when we worship in “Truth” note that Jesus said he was the truth, (Jn 14:6) for as Paul also declared, “The truth is in Jesus.” Eph 4:21 Jesus declared we should know the truth and the truth shall make us free. Jn 8:32 This same truth was declared to be the gospel of Christ. Eph 1:13
Therefore, when we worship God in Spirit and in Truth, we are worshiping according to what the Holy Spirit revealed to the apostles, (Gal 1:11,12 f; Acts 2:42) and to the truth which is revealed in the gospel, which is in Christ Jesus. In other words, if Jesus and his apostles didn’t command it or practice it, Christians shouldn’t be doing it!

The Lord's Touch
Reading the words of 1 Samuel 10:26 moved me to pray for a new touch from God. “And Saul also went to his house at Gibeah; and the valiant men whose hearts God had touched went with him.”
What a wonderful thing to be touched in the heart by God. There is nothing unusual about the Hebrew word here (naga'). It is simply “touch” in the ordinary sense. God touched their hearts.
The touch of God in the heart is an awesome thing. It is awesome because the heart is so precious to us—so deep and intimate and personal. When the heart is touched we are deeply touched. When the heart is touched the core of our being is touched. When the heart is touched someone has gotten through all the layers to the center. We have been known. We have been seen. We have been pierced.
The touch of God is an awesome thing because God is God. Just think of what is being said here! God touched them. Not a wife. Not a child. Not a parent. Not a counselor. But God. The One with infinite power in the universe. The One with infinite authority and infinite wisdom and infinite love and infinite goodness and infinite purity and infinite justice. That One touched their heart. How does the circumference of Jupiter touch the edge of a molecule? Let alone pe*****te to its nucleus?
The touch of God is awesome because it is a touch. It is a real connection. That it involves the heart is awesome. That it involves God is awesome. And that it involves an actual touch is awesome. The valiant men were not just spoken to. They were not just swayed by a divine influence. They were not just seen and known. God, with infinite condescension, touched their heart. God was that close. And they were not consumed.
I love that touch. I want it more and more. For myself and for all of you. I pray that God would touch me anew for his glory. I pray that he would touch us all. O for the touch of God! If it comes with fire, so be it. If it comes with water so be it. If it comes with wind, let it come, O God. If it comes with thunder and lightning, let us bow before it.
O Lord, come. Come that close. Burn and soak and blow and crash. Or still and small, come. Come all the way. Touch.
