Maundy Thursday
Maundy Thursday, also known as Holy Thursday, is the Thursday before Easter and marks the fifth day of Holy Week. It commemorates the Last Supper, when Jesus shared a final meal with his disciples before his crucifixion. During this meal, Jesus instituted the practice of communion (the Lord’s Supper) and washed his disciples’ feet as an act of humility and service.
The name "Maundy" comes from the Latin word mandatum, meaning "command." This refers to Jesus’ command to his disciples: “Love one another as I have loved you” (John 13:34).
Key Events Remembered on Maundy Thursday
The Last Supper: Jesus broke bread and shared wine, symbolizing his body and blood, and established the tradition of communion.
Foot Washing: Jesus washed his disciples’ feet, demonstrating humility and instructing them to serve others in the same way.
Jesus’ New Commandment: He gave the command to love one another.
Betrayal and Arrest: Maundy Thursday also marks the night Jesus was betrayed and arrested.
