Archdiocese of Kasama Youth Page To understand a fully evangelized society true in CHRIST, living in dignity as one family. Bangweolo was then named the Vicariate Apostolic of Kasama. Rev.

The Archdiocese of Kasama is the oldest diocese where Catholic faith first came to Zambia. The first presence of the Catholic Priests in the present Archdiocese of Kasama was at Mambwe Mwela in 1891 by the Missionaries of Africa, generally called the White Fathers. By Godโ€™s providence, while these fathers were travelling from Mponda in the south of Malawi, on their way to Karonga in Tanganyika, on

e of them became seriously ill and they had to interrupt this journey at Mambwe Mwela. The Mambwe people received them well and so they stayed building the first settlement. From there the fathers spread the Gospel to the Bemba tribes of the Region. Eventually, in 1895 the first Mission station was established at Kayambi. Two years later the Nyasa Vicariate was established separated from Tanganyika to which until now it belonged. This new vicariate comprised the whole North and East of Zambia together with the whole of Malawi. Bishop Joseph Dupont, nicknamed Motomoto (fire fire) was appointed the first Vicar apostolic of this Vicariate. He was the first Bishop consecrated on the Zambian soil, at Kayambi, 15th August 1897. The missionaries had to negotiate with the colonial government and the chiefs to allow them to open new missions. The British Governor allowed them to settle in Ituna area, which is within Kasama. They finally settled in Chilubula in 1899 which became the first cathedral. The missionaries invoked the name of Mary as Help of Christians upon the new parish thus ever since she has been the patroness of the Archdiocese. Before the Bemba Chief Mwamba Chipoya died in 1898, he left his territory of the Ituna to be ruled by Bishop Dupont until a new successor would be found. As it happened, Bishop Dupont ruled the people as chief for over a year. From that time the archbishop of Kasama has been associated with the chieftaincy of Mwamba and is always given the title of Mwamba Chipoya by the royal establishment. Even though Bishop Dupont died in Tunisia on 19th March 1930 his remains were brought back in 2000 to the church and people he ruled and is buried in Chilubula Church which was his first cathedral. This association of the Church with the Bemba people did facilitate the opening of more new missions among the Bemba and their conquered tribes. With more missions opened and the territory being so vast, divisions of Nyasa Vicariate became inevitable. Thus, on 28th January 1913, it was divided into Bangweolo and Nyasa Vicariates. The division gave a better chance for the development of this new Vicariate of Bangweolo which on 23rd May 1933 had its Northern part separated as Abercorn (Mbala) Vicariate and soon became Diocese of Mbala and later Mpika. Another division took place on 10th July 1952, when the Western part of Bangweolo Vicariate, was separated and created into the Fort Rosebery Apostolic Prefecture which is now Diocese of Mansa. It became the Diocese of Kasama on 25th April 1959, at the establishment of the Hierarchy in Zambia. Eventually, on 12th June 1969 it was raised to the status of the Archdiocese of Kasama. The Auxiliary bishop of Mansa Rt. Clement Chabukasansha was appointed first archbishop of the new Archdiocese of Kasama. A further addition of territory to the Archdiocese happened on Pentecost day, 23rd May 1999, with the permission of the Holy See, when parishes to the North of Kasama that belonged to Mbala/Mpika Diocese were handed over to the Archdiocese thus increasing not only the geographical boundaries but also parishes to 23 that year. After the retirement of Archbishop Clement Chabukasansha, Most Rev. Elias Mutale, who was bishop of Mansa was appointed to the Archdiocese and took over office in 1973. He died in tragic road accident in Lusaka on 12th February 1990 and was replace by Archbishop James Mwewa Spaita who also was bishop of Mansa before. He was archbishop from 24th February 1991 till his retirement on 16th May 2009. He settled in Chilubula Parish till his death on 4th November 2014. On 12th January 2012, Bishop of Mpika Rt. Rev Ignatius Chama was appointed archbishop of Kasama by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI. He took possession of the Archdiocese on 28th April 2012

The archdiocese has now 34 parishes with 4 sub-parishes, all with resident priests ministering to the people. Sub-parishes are being grown into becoming parishes. As metropolitan province it has only two suffragan dioceses of Mansa and Mpika.

๐Ÿ“– SUNDAY READINGS February 8

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A โœ๏ธ
Lectionary: 73

1st READING: Isaiah 58:7-10

Thus says the LORD:
Share your bread with the hungry,
shelter the oppressed and the homeless;
clothe the naked when you see them,
and do not turn your back on your own.
Then your light shall break forth like the dawn,
and your wound shall quickly be healed;
your vindication shall go before you,
and the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.
Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer,
you shall cry for help, and he will say: Here I am!
If you remove from your midst
oppression, false accusation and malicious speech;
if you bestow your bread on the hungry
and satisfy the afflicted;
then light shall rise for you in the darkness,
and the gloom shall become for you like midday.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Psalm 112:4-5, 6-7, 8-9

R. (4a) The just man is a light in darkness to the upright.
or:
R. Alleluia.

Light shines through the darkness for the upright;
he is gracious and merciful and just.
Well for the man who is gracious and lends,
who conducts his affairs with justice.
R. The just man is a light in darkness to the upright.
or:
R. Alleluia.

He shall never be moved;
the just one shall be in everlasting remembrance.
An evil report he shall not fear;
his heart is firm, trusting in the LORD.
R. The just man is a light in darkness to the upright.
or:
R. Alleluia.

His heart is steadfast; he shall not fear.
Lavishly he gives to the poor;
His justice shall endure forever;
his horn shall be exalted in glory.
R. The just man is a light in darkness to the upright.
or:
R. Alleluia.

2nd READING: 1 Corinthians 2:1-5

When I came to you, brothers and sisters,
proclaiming the mystery of God,
I did not come with sublimity of words or of wisdom.
For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you
except Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
I came to you in weakness and fear and much trembling,
and my message and my proclamation
were not with persuasive words of wisdom,
but with a demonstration of Spirit and power,
so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom
but on the power of God.

GOSPEL: Matthew 5:13-16

Jesus said to his disciples:
"You are the salt of the earth.
But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?
It is no longer good for anything
but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
You are the light of the world.
A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket;
it is set on a lampstand,
where it gives light to all in the house.
Just so, your light must shine before others,
that they may see your good deeds
and glorify your heavenly Father."

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A โœ๏ธ
Lectionary: 70

1st READING: Zephaniah 2:3; 3:12-13

Seek the LORD, all you humble of the earth,
who have observed his law;
seek justice, seek humility;
perhaps you may be sheltered
on the day of the LORD's anger.

But I will leave as a remnant in your midst
a people humble and lowly,
who shall take refuge in the name of the LORD:
the remnant of Israel.
They shall do no wrong
and speak no lies;
nor shall there be found in their mouths
a deceitful tongue;
they shall pasture and couch their flocks
with none to disturb them.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Psalm 146:6-7, 8-9, 9-10

R. (Mt 5:3) Blessed the poor in spirit; the kingdom of heaven is theirs!
or:
R. Alleluia.

The LORD keeps faith forever,
secures justice for the oppressed,
gives food to the hungry.
The LORD sets captives free.
R. Blessed the poor in spirit; the kingdom of heaven is theirs!
or:
R. Alleluia.

The LORD gives sight to the blind;
the LORD raises up those who were bowed down.
The LORD loves the just;
the LORD protects strangers.
R. Blessed the poor in spirit; the kingdom of heaven is theirs!
or:
R. Alleluia.

The fatherless and the widow the LORD sustains,
but the way of the wicked he thwarts.
The LORD shall reign forever;
your God, O Zion, through all generations. Alleluia.
R. Blessed the poor in spirit; the kingdom of heaven is theirs!
or:
R. Alleluia.

2nd READING: 1 Corinthians 1:26-31

Consider your own calling, brothers and sisters.
Not many of you were wise by human standards,
not many were powerful,
not many were of noble birth.
Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise,
and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong,
and God chose the lowly and despised of the world,
those who count for nothing,
to reduce to nothing those who are something,
so that no human being might boast before God.
It is due to him that you are in Christ Jesus,
who became for us wisdom from God,
as well as righteousness, sanctification, and redemption,
so that, as it is written,
"Whoever boasts, should boast in the Lord."

ALLELUIA โ€“ Matthew 5:12A

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Rejoice and be glad;
your reward will be great in heaven.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

GOSPEL: Matthew 5:1-12A

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain,
and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him.
He began to teach them, saying:
"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the land.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the clean of heart,
for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you
and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me.
Rejoice and be glad,
for your reward will be great in heaven."

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A โœ๏ธ
Lectionary: 67

1st READING: Isaiah 8:23โ€”9:3

First the Lord degraded the land of Zebulun
and the land of Naphtali;
but in the end he has glorified the seaward road,
the land west of the Jordan,
the District of the Gentiles.

Anguish has taken wing, dispelled is darkness:
for there is no gloom where but now there was distress.
The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom
a light has shone.
You have brought them abundant joy
and great rejoicing,
as they rejoice before you as at the harvest,
as people make merry when dividing spoils.
For the yoke that burdened them,
the pole on their shoulder,
and the rod of their taskmaster
you have smashed, as on the day of Midian.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Psalm 27:1, 4, 13-14

R. (1a) The Lord is my light and my salvation.

The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom should I fear?
The LORD is my life's refuge;
of whom should I be afraid?
R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.

One thing I ask of the LORD;
this I seek:
To dwell in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
That I may gaze on the loveliness of the LORD
and contemplate his temple.
R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.

I believe that I shall see the bounty of the LORD
in the land of the living.
Wait for the LORD with courage;
be stouthearted, and wait for the LORD.
R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.

2nd READING: 1 Corinthians 1:10-13, 17

I urge you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
that all of you agree in what you say,
and that there be no divisions among you,
but that you be united in the same mind and in the same purpose.
For it has been reported to me about you, my brothers and sisters,
by Chloe's people, that there are rivalries among you.
I mean that each of you is saying,
"I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos,"
or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ."
Is Christ divided?
Was Paul crucified for you?
Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?
For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel,
and not with the wisdom of human eloquence,
so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its meaning.

ALLELUIA โ€“ Matthew 4:23

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Jesus proclaimed the Gospel of the kingdom
and cured every disease among the people.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

GOSPEL: Matthew 4:12-23

When Jesus heard that John had been arrested,
he withdrew to Galilee.
He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea,
in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali,
that what had been said through Isaiah the prophet
might be fulfilled:
Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the Gentiles,
the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light,
on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death
light has arisen.
From that time on, Jesus began to preach and say,
"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

As he was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers,
Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew,
casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen.
He said to them,
"Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men."
At once they left their nets and followed him.
He walked along from there and saw two other brothers,
James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John.
They were in a boat, with their father Zebedee, mending their nets.
He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father
and followed him.
He went around all of Galilee,
teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom,
and curing every disease and illness among the people.

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A โœ๏ธ
Lectionary: 64

1st READING: Isaiah 49:3, 5-6

The LORD said to me: You are my servant,
Israel, through whom I show my glory.
Now the LORD has spoken
who formed me as his servant from the womb,
that Jacob may be brought back to him
and Israel gathered to him;
and I am made glorious in the sight of the LORD,
and my God is now my strength!
It is too little, the LORD says, for you to be my servant,
to raise up the tribes of Jacob,
and restore the survivors of Israel;
I will make you a light to the nations,
that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Psalm 40:2, 4, 7-8, 8-9, 10

R. (8a and 9a) Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will.

I have waited, waited for the LORD,
and he stooped toward me and heard my cry.
And he put a new song into my mouth,
a hymn to our God.
R. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will.

Sacrifice or offering you wished not,
but ears open to obedience you gave me.
Holocausts or sin-offerings you sought not;
then said I, "Behold I come."
R. Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will.

"In the written scroll it is prescribed for me,
to do your will, O my God, is my delight,
and your law is within my heart!"
R. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will.

I announced your justice in the vast assembly;
I did not restrain my lips, as you, O LORD, know.
R. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will.

2nd READING: 1 Corinthians 1:1-3

Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God,
and Sosthenes our brother,
to the church of God that is in Corinth,
to you who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be holy,
with all those everywhere who call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
their Lord and ours.
Grace to you and peace from God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ.

ALLELUIA โ€“ John 1:14a, 12a

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

The Word of God became flesh and dwelt among us.
To those who accepted him,
he gave power to become children of God.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

GOSPEL: John 1:29-34

John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and said,
"Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.
He is the one of whom I said,
A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me
because he existed before me.
I did not know him,
but the reason why I came baptizing with water
was that he might be made known to Israel."
John testified further, saying,
"I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from heaven
and remain upon him.
I did not know him,
but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me,
On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain,
he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.
Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God."

The Baptism of the Lord, Year A โœ๏ธ
Lectionary: 21

1st READING: Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7

Thus says the LORD:
Here is my servant whom I uphold,
my chosen one with whom I am pleased,
upon whom I have put my spirit;
he shall bring forth justice to the nations,
not crying out, not shouting,
not making his voice heard in the street.
a bruised reed he shall not break,
and a smoldering wick he shall not quench,
until he establishes justice on the earth;
the coastlands will wait for his teaching.

I, the LORD, have called you for the victory of justice,
I have grasped you by the hand;
I formed you, and set you
as a covenant of the people,
a light for the nations,
to open the eyes of the blind,
to bring out prisoners from confinement,
and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Psalm 29:1-2, 3-4, 3, 9-10

R. (11b) The Lord will bless his people with peace.

Give to the LORD, you sons of God,
give to the LORD glory and praise,
Give to the LORD the glory due his name;
adore the LORD in holy attire.
R. The Lord will bless his people with peace.

The voice of the LORD is over the waters,
the LORD, over vast waters.
The voice of the LORD is mighty;
the voice of the LORD is majestic.
R. The Lord will bless his people with peace.

The God of glory thunders,
and in his temple all say, "Glory!"
The LORD is enthroned above the flood;
the LORD is enthroned as king forever.
R. The Lord will bless his people with peace.

2nd READING: Acts 10:34-38

Peter proceeded to speak to those gathered
in the house of Cornelius, saying:
"In truth, I see that God shows no partiality.
Rather, in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly
is acceptable to him.
You know the word that he sent to the Israelites
as he proclaimed peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all,
what has happened all over Judea,
beginning in Galilee after the baptism
that John preached,
how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth
with the Holy Spirit and power.
He went about doing good
and healing all those oppressed by the devil,
for God was with him."

ALLELUIA โ€“ Cf. Mark 9:7

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

The heavens were opened and the voice of the Father thundered:
This is my beloved Son, listen to him.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

GOSPEL: Matthew 3:13-17

Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan
to be baptized by him.
John tried to prevent him, saying,
"I need to be baptized by you,
and yet you are coming to me?"
Jesus said to him in reply,
"Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us
to fulfill all righteousness."
Then he allowed him.
After Jesus was baptized,
he came up from the water and behold,
the heavens were opened for him,
and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove
and coming upon him.
And a voice came from the heavens, saying,
"This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."
