Lawyer Milner Katolo has confirmed that former presidential candidate Brian Mundubile, lawyer Makebi Zulu and 16 other individuals have been formally charged with treason, bringing the total number of accused persons in the matter to 18.
Mr. Katolo, who is representing Valden Findlay, says the gravity of the treason charge places a responsibility on the State to clearly demonstrate before the court the specific actions that allegedly amounted to the offence.
He has argued that treason is a serious charge and should not be brought against individuals without careful consideration and sufficient grounds.
Meanwhile, Mr. Katolo has raised concerns regarding the accused persons' access to legal representation, stating that although they were eventually allowed to meet with their lawyers at Lusaka Central Police, access had earlier been restricted.
The lawyer further alleged that his client, Mr. Findlay, had previously been denied access to both his lawyers and family members and was charged with financing terrorism in the absence of his legal representatives.
Mr. Katolo says the defence is now looking forward to the matter being brought before the courts, where the State will be expected to present evidence in support of the charges.
He says court proceedings will also provide the defence with an opportunity to challenge and test the evidence presented by the prosecution.
