An old master walked with a weary young disciple who complained of constant struggle and heavy burdens.
The master handed the youth a cup of bitter medicine, telling him to drink. The young man grimaced at the taste.
The master then led him to a vast, crystal-clear mountain lake and told him to pour a handful of salt into it, then drink from the edge.
As the disciple drank the cool water, the master asked, "How does it taste?"
"Fresh and sweet," the young man replied. "I cannot taste the salt at all."
The master smiled gently and said, "The pains and sorrows of life are like the salt. Their amount is fixed, but the bitterness you taste depends entirely on the vessel you put them into. When you are hurting, stop trying to be a narrow cup. Expand your heart, enlarge your spirit, and become like a vast lake.

A traveler came upon a wise teacher sitting by the road, weeping softly over a shattered clay jar.
"Why do you mourn a simple vessel when the world is full of clay?" the traveler asked.
The teacher looked up, his eyes bright with sudden clarity, and smiled. "I am not weeping for the jar. I am weeping because I spent forty years carrying it, believing it defined who I was. Now that it is gone, I finally realize I was never the jar, I was the space it held."
