Two Realms That Control the Heart
Text: Psalm 121
There are many things in life that make people want to give up.
Trials, disappointment, rejection, delay, and pain can weaken the heart.
But every believer must understand that there are two realms fighting for control of the human heart:
The Realm of the Flesh
The Realm of the Spirit
1. The Realm of the Flesh
The flesh always wants things done its own way.
People who walk in the flesh are controlled by emotions, desires, pride, and human understanding.
Sometimes people:
Come to church only because it is a routine.
Want marriage only because they want the title.
Start businesses because others are doing it.
Follow men of God more than they follow God Himself.
The question this morning is: Why are you following God?
If God removes the things that make you happy, will you still follow Him?
It is possible to love church and not love God.
It is possible to admire a servant of God and still not know God personally.
The flesh serves God for benefits:
Good job
Money
Car
Acceptance from people
But when challenges come, the flesh quits.
2. The Realm of the Spirit
Those who walk in the Spirit remain with God through every season.
Even in pain, they still trust Him.
The Spirit focuses on eternal growth, not temporary comfort.
When trials come:
The flesh complains.
The Spirit prays.
When correction comes:
The flesh becomes offended.
The Spirit repents and grows.
When persecution comes:
The flesh wants revenge.
The Spirit draws closer to God.
Scriptures
Galatians 5:16
Romans 8:5β8
Galatians 5:21
βThose who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.β Romans 8:8
Signs You Are Operating in the Flesh
Your associations begin to change negatively.
Your speech changes.
You begin to lie.
You reject correction.
You become defensive whenever truth is preached.
You depend only on your own strength.
Whatever is built by human strength will always need human strength to sustain it.
Signs You Are Walking in the Spirit
Your trials bring you closer to God.
You remain faithful even when life is hard.
You desire sound doctrine.
You focus on long-term spiritual growth.
You seek relationship with God above material things.
Conclusion
This morning, ask yourself:
Am I following God because I truly love Him?
Or because of what I want from Him?
May we develop a relationship that keeps us in God and not outside God.
Even when things are not working according to our expectations, may we remain standing in the Spirit.
Because those who walk in the Spirit will never be defeated by the flesh.
