What is the purpose?
Once upon a time, there was a king whose experience and analysis in the face of life's perplexities were recorded in the book of Ecclesiastes.
What is interesting is that this king, probably King Solomon, reigned over Israel during what were certainly some of the finest years in its history. By worldly standards, he had more power, prestige, and wealth than anyone before him. Yet, he summed up this luxury with one depressing word: "vanity!"
"All is vanity!" (Ecclesiastes 1:2) "All things are wearisome beyond words." (Ecclesiastes 1:8) "There is nothing new under the sun." (Ecclesiastes 1:9) "I have seen all the works of the sun; and behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind." (Ecclesiastes 1:14)
Although written thousands of years ago, this somber analysis still resonates with our own yearning for more. We want more than trivial things. We want more than superficial relationships and ambitions. We want more than a life that appears prosperous but is secretly unsatisfying. We want more, but what we want usually doesn't satisfy us.
Like the author of Ecclesiastes, we can ask ourselves, "What is the meaning of life?"
At the end of the book, "the Master" tried to find meaning in everything under the sun, and he concludes his reflections with these powerful words:
"Now let us hear the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man." Ecclesiastes 12:13. We can chase after everything this world has to offer and derive temporary pleasure from it. But ultimately, pursuing these things apart from God always leaves us feeling empty.
The great news, however, is that God in heaven created us and loves us, and He understands our true needs. He knows that life is better when we follow His plan for life. He is worthy of our admiration, honor, and worship.
So, fear the Lord and keep His commandments. Love Him with all your being and love your neighbor as yourself. This is the essence of it. Only then will life cease to be meaningless. Have a wonderful Wednesday and a beautiful start to the week in God's presence, seeking His face, for He is the Source of life and the Solution to Every Problem!
