Have you ever noticed that the large Paschal Candle, which burns prominently near the altar throughout Easter season, is suddenly extinguished after Pentecost Sunday? Many Catholics see it happen every year without fully understanding the deep symbolism behind it.

The extinguishing of the Paschal Candle after Pentecost carries profound spiritual meaning connected to the mission of the Church, the Ascension of Jesus Christ, and the coming of the Holy Spirit.

First, the Paschal Candle itself symbolizes the risen Christ. It is first lit during the Easter Vigil from the new fire, representing Christ rising victorious over sin and death.

The Bible says: โ€œI am the light of the worldโ€ (John 8:12).

During the Easter season, the candle burns near the altar as a visible sign of the Resurrection and Christโ€™s living presence among His people.

Second, the candle remains lit throughout the fifty days of Easter until Pentecost because the Church is celebrating the full Easter mystery:
the Resurrection,
Christ appearing to the disciples,
the Ascension,
and finally the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

Pentecost completes the Easter season.

Third, after Pentecost, the Paschal Candle is extinguished because the Church symbolically marks the end of Christโ€™s visible earthly appearances after the Resurrection.

Spiritually speaking, the mission of Christ is now entrusted to the Church through the power of the Holy Spirit.

The apostles are no longer simply f0ll0wing the physical presence of Jesus; they are now sent into the world to continue His mission.

The Bible says: โ€œYou will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon youโ€ (Acts 1:8).

Fourth, extinguishing the candle does not mean Christ is absent. Rather, it symbolizes a transition:
from Christโ€™s visible Resurrection appearances,
to His sacramental and spiritual presence through the Church and the Holy Spirit.

The light of Christ is now meant to shine through believers themselves.

Fifth, even after Pentecost, the Paschal Candle is still used during very important moments such as:
baptisms,
funerals,
and occasionally solemn liturgies.

At Baptism, the newly baptized receive light from the Paschal Candle, symbolizing receiving the light of Christ.

At funerals, the candle reminds Catholics
of hope in the Resurrection and eternal life.

Sixth, the actual process of extinguishing the Paschal Candle is usually simple but deeply symbolic. In many churches:
the candle remains lit throughout Pentecost Sunday Mass,
and after the liturgy, or sometimes after the Gospel or dismissal depending on local custom, it is reverently extinguished.

Some parishes may process it away from the sanctuary to the baptistry or another place where it is normally kept during Ordinary Time.

There is no single dramatic universal ritual prescribed everywhere for extinguishing it, but the action itself carries the symbolism.

Seventh, in some traditions, the extinguishing happens quietly without announcement, emphasizing the transition naturally within the liturgical calendar.
The focus shifts from the Easter season to the ongoing mission of the Church empowered by the Holy Spirit.

Eighth, spiritually speaking, Pentecost marks the moment when the Church itself becomes the visible witness of Christ in the world.

The Bible says: โ€œYou are the light of the worldโ€ (Matthew 5:14).

The extinguished candle symbolically reminds believers that they must now carry Christโ€™s light into the world through:
faith,
holiness,
evangelization,
and charity.

Finally, the tradition beautifully teaches that the Resurrection was never meant to remain only a historical event celebrated at Easter. The risen Christ now lives and acts through His Church.

In simple words, the Paschal Candle is extinguished after Pentecost because Pentecost completes the Easter season. The extinguishing symbolizes the end of Christโ€™s visible Resurrection appearances and the beginning of the Churchโ€™s mission through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Now you know.

Today, the fire of the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles, and the Church was born. What began in an Upper Room in Jerusalem continues today across the whole world.

Pentecost is not just a past event.
It is a reminder that the Holy Spirit still transforms lives, strengthens the weak, heals hearts, raises saints, and sets souls on fire for God.

May this Pentecost bring new grace, new fire, new strength, and new life into your soul.

May 14โ€”TRADITIONAL FEAST OF THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD

Today, May 14, the Church traditionally celebrates the glorious Feast of the Ascension of the Lord โ€” the day when Jesus Christ ascended into Heaven forty days after His Resurrection. This sacred mystery marks not the end of Christโ€™s presence, but the fulfillment of His earthly mission and the beginning of the Churchโ€™s mission in the world.

Before ascending, Jesus gathered His disciples and reminded them not to be afraid. Though He would no longer remain visibly with them, He promised the coming of the Holy Spirit and assured them: โ€œI am with you always, until the end of the ageโ€ (Matthew 28:20). The Ascension, therefore, is not a goodbye filled with abandonment, but a moment of hope, promise, and divine victory.

The Ascension reveals the glory of Christ. The same Jesus who suffered on the Cross, died, and rose again now reigns in Heaven at the right hand of the Father. Humanity itself is lifted up in Him. In ascending into Heaven, Christ opens the gates of eternal life for all who follow Him faithfully. It reminds us that our true home is not merely in this world, but in the Kingdom of God.

This feast also challenges every Christian to continue Christโ€™s mission on earth. Before ascending, Jesus commanded His disciples to proclaim the Gospel to all nations. The Church continues this mission today through acts of love, mercy, truth, justice, and evangelization. We are called to become witnesses of Christ in our families, communities, workplaces, and even in the digital world.

In a world filled with confusion, conflict, and uncertainty, the Feast of the Ascension reminds us to lift our eyes toward Heaven. Christ reigns above every trial, every fear, and every darkness. His Ascension assures us that suffering does not have the final word โ€” glory does. Hope does. God does.

As we commemorate this traditional Feast of the Ascension of the Lord, may our hearts be renewed with faith and longing for Heaven. May we never lose sight of Christ, who ascended not to leave us alone, but to prepare a place for us and to remain with us through the Holy Spirit and the Holy Eucharist.

โ€œO God, the King of glory, You have exalted Your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph unto Your Kingdom in Heaven; leave us not comfortless, but send us Your Holy Spirit.โ€

DOES ASCENSION FALL ON THURSDAY OR SUNDAY?

The Feast of the Ascension of the Lord traditionally falls on a Thursday โ€” specifically the 40th day after Easter Sunday. This is based directly on Sacred Scripture, particularly Acts 1:3, which states that the risen Christ appeared to His disciples for forty days before ascending into Heaven. Thus, from the earliest centuries of Christianity, the Church commemorated the Ascension exactly forty days after Easter, making it a Thursday celebration.

According to the account in Acts 1:9, after giving His final instructions to the apostles, Jesus โ€œwas lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.โ€ The Ascension completes the earthly ministry of Christ and crowns the mysteries of His Passion, Death, and Resurrection. Having conquered sin and death, Jesus ascends body and soul into Heaven by His own divine power and is now seated at the right hand of the Father. This truth is professed every time Catholics recite the Apostlesโ€™ Creed.

Traditionally, therefore, Ascension Thursday holds profound theological and liturgical significance. It emphasizes the biblical forty-day period between Easter and the Ascension and reflects the continuity of the Churchโ€™s ancient tradition. In many countries, especially in Europe and parts of the world where the traditional calendar is preserved, Ascension remains celebrated on Thursday as a Holy Day of Obligation.

However, the Church also allows certain adaptations for pastoral reasons. Under Canon 1246 ยง2 of the Code of Canon Law, bishopsโ€™ conferences, with approval from the Holy See, may transfer some holy days of obligation to Sunday. This was done in several countries, including many dioceses in the United States and other regions, where the Solemnity of the Ascension is observed on the Seventh Sunday of Easter instead of Thursday.

The reason for the transfer is largely pastoral: celebrating the feast on Sunday allows more faithful to participate in the liturgy and reflect on the mystery of Christโ€™s Ascension. Since many Catholics may not be able to attend Mass on a weekday due to work or school obligations, transferring the feast to Sunday ensures broader participation in this important solemnity.

So, does Ascension fall on Thursday or Sunday? The answer is both โ€” depending on the liturgical norms of a particular country or ecclesiastical province.
