HONOURING THE SOURCE
The divine Agape love models how we should treat those who gave us life. To honor your parents is not just a commandment; it is an act that reflects the deep, respectful love we have received from above.
1. RESPECT THEIR DIGNITY
Just as God gives us a high status (sonship) we must respect the dignity of those who raised us:
Listen to Wisdom:
Even if you disagree, give weight and time to their counsel. Proverbs reminds us that hearing a parent's instruction is an "ornament of grace" for your head (Proverbs 1:8-9). Respecting their years of experience is an act of honoring their journey.
Show Deference:
Speak to them and about them with courtesy, especially in public. Avoid harsh, dismissive, or condescending tones. Your words should reflect the high value you place on their role in your life.
Acknowledge Their Sacrifice:
Reflect on the sheer (Agape) love they demonstrated—the tireless sacrifice of time, energy, and resources. Acknowledge this effort and express gratitude genuinely and often.
2. MIRROR GOD'S LOVE
The unconditional nature of God's love for us should be the blueprint for how we relate to our parents, even when it is difficult:
Offer Patience and Forgiveness:
No parent is perfect. Just as you are extended unconditional forgiveness and patience, extend the same grace to them. Let the divine love you receive empower you to forgive their mistakes or shortcomings.
Provide Care in Need:
As they age, honoring them often transitions into providing physical, emotional, or financial care. This practical demonstration of love is a tangible way to fulfill the commitment of the heart.
Prioritize Connection:
Make time for them. A simple call, a visit, or shared meal communicates that they are valued, essential, and still a central part of your life—an action of genuine, cherishing love.
Your Dignity is Secured: Because you are the Huios Agapaò —the loved and cherished child—you have the security and strength to honor your parents without compromising your own adult identity.
Let the abundance of God's love for you flow outwards, blessing and honoring the parents He placed in your life.
