Luke 18:1-8
Continuation of Teaching on Prayer
Last week we studied Luke 11:1, where Jesus was praying in a certain place .One of His disciples approached Him and asked to be taught how to pray.The bible says this disciple wanted Jesus to teach them to pray just as John had taught his own disciples. This request revealed the disciples concern that they did not yet know how to pray effectively, and recognised the need for guidance in learning about prayer.
Today, I would like us to reflect on the arable Jesus sharer with His disciples, designed to help the understand the importance of prayer.Parables often make lessons easier to grasp, and in this case, Jesus emphasized that mankind is called to pray without losing heart.When we pray, we must not lose faith or grow weary of prayer. Instead,we should cultivate a love for prayer that endures even in the face of challenges. Prayer requires perseverance,standing firm and refusing to give up, no matter the circumstances.
In verse 2, the Bible describes a judge in a certain town who neither feared God nor cared about what people thought.This man consistently opposed God's ways. Just imagine the chaos of being led by someone with no reverence for God, a leader who feared no one and showed no regard for divine authority.Such an example highlights the seriousness of living and leading without the fear of God, and it reminds us why prayer and faith are essential in navigating life under imperfect leadership.
In verse 3 and 4, we read about a widow in the same town who kept on coming to the judge with a plea: 'Grant me justice against my enemy' Though this judge didn't fear God or cared about people, the widow refused to give up. For some time he ignored her, but eventually he said to himself, even though I do not fear God or care what people think, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice.
If the widow had given up, she would have suffered consequences of injustice, but because she persisted, she received justice even from a man who had no reverence for God. Brethren, how many victories might you have already achieved if you not given up or lost faith?
In verse 5, Jesus says, Listen to what the unjust judge says, though he did not fear God,he still granted the widow justice. How much more will our merciful God respond when we cry out to Him day and night.He is able to do all things for us. This reminds me of a man of God who longed to own a house worth millions of rands, he prayed faithfully every day for a long time until God answered. Likewise, we must pray, humble ourselves, and persist before God until He responds.
People in the world please for things that satisfy the flesh, but we as brethren fail to be persistent in prayer, we fail to humble ourselves before God and say: God I know you did not provide for me yesterday, but here I am again today, Lord to beg you.
In Egypt, God did not free the Israelites merely because they were slaves.God freed them because of their tears and constant pleading for deliverance. We need to pray without ceasing, humbling ourselves before God until he responds, just like the judge granted justice to the widow because the widow did not give up, so what is stopping brethrens to beg God our Father in prayer until something happens.
When your time comes, no one can stop it.We cannot resist God's timing, Pray and plead until your time comes, until God responds,He will have mercy on those who prays at and night without giving up, We must pray until we delight in prayer itself, reaching a point where we thank God for everything He does for us. Have faith in God in all situations.
Our duty is to speak and God makes it happen. Speak over your CV and you shall receive employment, speak over your shoes and they will carry you in the right direction, speak over your eyes that they may see clearly, speak over your heart, that it may repent, speak over your mind that it may not be corrupt.
Paul says pray without ceasing, the disciple went to Jesus and said teach us to pray because they saw that prayer is powerful.The secret is: 'DO NOT GIVE UP'. The Holy Spirit is activated when you pray. Appeal to God for grace and mercy so that you may pray and remain in His presence. Ask God to grant you the spirit of prayer.
