AN OPEN LETTER TO THE WOUNDED SEED
To the Person Whose Pain Nobody Seems to Understand

Dear wounded one,

I am writing to you because there may come a time in life when you explain yourself and nobody appears to understand.

You tell them:
“This hurts.”
They tell you what they think you should do.

You say:
“Please listen to what is happening inside me.”

They answer with conclusions.
You try to explain your wound.
They analyse your personality.
You try to explain your disappointment.
They call you:
difficult,
arrogant,
rebellious,
self-centred,
stubborn,
unwilling to listen,
or unwilling to change.
And sometimes the greatest pain is not only what originally wounded you.

The second pain is discovering that some of the very people you thought would understand your wound do not seem to understand it at all.
They may not call.
They may not ask:
“How are you really doing?”
They may discuss your response without first understanding the depth of what produced the response.
They may examine the smoke while never asking where the fire began.

And eventually you may ask:
“DOES ANYBODY SEE ME?”
I want to tell you something I learned in my own wilderness.

YOUR PAIN IS YOUR PAIN.
Another person can listen.
Another person can sympathize.
Another person can analyse.
Another person can counsel.
Another person can even genuinely love you.
But they cannot enter completely into the place where that pain was registered inside you.
You are the primary witness of the inner wound.
That does not mean every conclusion you reach is automatically correct.
It does not mean you should refuse wise correction.

It means something simpler:
DO NOT DENY YOUR REAL EXPERIENCE MERELY BECAUSE SOMEBODY ELSE CANNOT FEEL IT.

STOP SPENDING ALL YOUR ENERGY TRYING TO MAKE EVERYBODY FEEL WHAT ONLY YOU FELT
There comes a point when explanation becomes exhaustion.
You explain again.
You add another paragraph.
You send another message.
You search for different words.
You think:
“Perhaps if I explain it properly, then they will finally understand.”
Sometimes they may.
Sometimes they may not.
And Chokmah asks:
HOW MUCH OF YOUR REMAINING STRENGTH WILL YOU SPEND TRYING TO MAKE ANOTHER PERSON ENTER AN EXPERIENCE THEY DID NOT LIVE?
Speak truth.
Seek understanding.
Accept appropriate counsel.
But do not make your healing dependent upon everybody finally saying:
“Now I understand exactly.”
They may never understand exactly.
And you can still continue.

YOU ARE LIKE A SEED UNDER THE SOIL
Think about a seed.
When the seed disappears beneath the soil, nobody passing above the ground can see what is happening inside it.
From above, it appears:
buried,
covered,
hidden,
and perhaps finished.
But something extraordinary is happening where human eyes cannot see.
The seed is not consulting the neighbouring seeds about whether it has permission to germinate.
It is responding to what has been placed inside it.
There is life inside.
There is design inside.
There is potential inside.
There is an instruction inside the seed that says:
GROW.
This is how I want you to understand yourself.

THE SOIL THAT COVERS YOU MAY ALSO BECOME THE PLACE FROM WHICH YOU EMERGE
Rejection may feel like soil.
Misunderstanding may feel like soil.
Loneliness may feel like soil.
Disappointment may feel like soil.
Being overlooked may feel like soil.
For a time, everything seems to be pressing downward.
But the seed does something remarkable:
IT PUSHES UPWARD THROUGH WHAT WAS COVERING IT.
The soil did not disappear.
The seed moved through it.
That is Chokmah.

DO NOT CALL THE SOIL YOUR GRAVE TOO EARLY
The seed under the soil could say:
“They have buried me.”
But the farmer may say:
“I planted you.”
Those two interpretations look similar from inside the darkness.
That is why wisdom is necessary.
Not every dark season means the end.
Sometimes you are in a place where roots are developing before anybody sees leaves.
Therefore:
HIDDEN DOES NOT MEAN FORGOTTEN.
COVERED DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY MEAN DESTROYED.
UNSEEN DOES NOT MEAN WITHOUT PURPOSE.

THE SEED CARRIES SOMETHING THE SOIL DID NOT CREATE
The soil surrounds the seed.
But the soil did not design the seed.
The stones around it did not manufacture it.
The people walking above it did not create its internal blueprint.
This becomes a powerful principle:
YOUR ENVIRONMENT DID NOT MANUFACTURE YOUR DIVINE PURPOSE.
Therefore your environment does not have final authority to define it.
People may describe you.
People may misunderstand you.
People may criticize you.
People may temporarily reject you.
But they did not manufacture the deepest purpose God placed within your life.
LOOK INSIDE BEFORE YOU LOOK AROUND
When pain comes, we naturally look around.
Who is supporting me?
Who called me?
Who believes me?
Who understands me?
Who defended me?
These questions matter.
Human support matters.
But eventually another question must become greater:
WHAT HAS GOD PLACED INSIDE ME THAT MUST STILL COME OUT?
That question changes direction.
Instead of spending all your strength asking:
“Why did they leave?”
you begin asking:
“What must still germinate?”

THE SEED DOES NOT NEED AN AUDIENCE BEFORE IT GERMINATES
Nobody applauds the seed underground.
There is no crowd.
There is no microphone.
There is no certificate.
There is no announcement saying:
“Ladies and gentlemen, germination has begun.”
It happens quietly.
Therefore:
SOME OF THE MOST IMPORTANT WORK GOD DOES IN A PERSON MAY HAPPEN BEFORE ANYBODY APPLAUDS IT.
Do not make applause the proof of growth.

ROOTS DEVELOP BEFORE SHADE APPEARS
This is important.
Before the tree can provide shade, it must develop roots.
Before birds can rest in the branches, there must be branches.
Before bees can visit flowers, there must be blossoms.
Before somebody can eat fruit, there must first be hidden development.
Therefore:
DO NOT DESPISE THE SEASON WHEN YOU ARE DEVELOPING WHAT OTHER PEOPLE CANNOT YET USE.
Your roots are not wasted merely because nobody is sitting under your shade yet.

ONE DAY WHAT WAS HIDDEN MAY SERVE OTHERS
The seed breaks through.
A shoot appears.
Then leaves.
Then branches.
Then flowers.
Then fruit.
And something beautiful happens:
the life that once looked buried becomes useful to others.
Birds can rest.
Bees can visit.
People can receive shade.
Fruit can feed.
Therefore:
YOUR DEVELOPMENT IS NOT ONLY ABOUT YOUR SURVIVAL.
There may be people who will one day benefit from what God develops in you now.
That is mandate.

DO NOT GROW TO PROVE PEOPLE WRONG
But there is a warning here.
Do not say:
“I will succeed so that they regret rejecting me.”
Then rejection is still controlling you.
Your growth must not become revenge.
Grow because the seed was created to grow.
Serve because purpose requires service.
Produce fruit because fruit belongs to the design.
Therefore:
DO NOT BLOSSOM TO HUMILIATE THE PEOPLE WHO DID NOT SEE THE SEED.
BLOSSOM TO FULFIL THE PURPOSE OF THE ONE WHO MADE THE SEED.
That is freedom.

THE FARMER’S JOY IS GREATER THAN THE NEIGHBOUR’S OPINION
A seed does not fulfil its purpose by convincing every passer-by that it deserves to exist.
It fulfils its purpose by becoming what it was designed to become.
Therefore:
LET YOUR LIFE BRING JOY TO THE ONE WHO CREATED YOU.
Not everybody will understand your season.
Not everybody will recognize your beginning.
Not everybody will applaud your process.
But God knows what He placed within you.

PUSH THROUGH THE SOIL
Sometimes growth requires pressure.
The shoot pushes upward.
It moves through soil.
Sometimes around stones.
It searches for light.
That gives us another Chokmah principle:
RESISTANCE DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN YOU ARE MOVING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION.
Sometimes resistance is simply part of emergence.
But remain wise.
Not every obstacle must be fought.
Sometimes the root grows around the stone.
That is also intelligence.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO BREAK EVERY STONE
This is important.
Some people waste their entire life fighting every person who misunderstood them.
Every critic.
Every whisper.
Every accusation.
Every stone.
But the seed does not spend its entire energy trying to destroy every stone in the soil.
It finds a way toward the light.
Therefore:

NOT EVERY OBSTACLE DESERVES A BATTLE.
Some deserve:
distance,
wisdom,
patience,
or simply continued growth.

DO NOT WAIT FOR EVERYBODY TO APOLOGIZE BEFORE YOU GERMINATE
An apology may be important.
Justice matters.
Truth matters.
Reconciliation matters.
But do not place the entire future of your life in another person’s hands.
Do not say:
“I will remain underground until everybody admits what happened.”
No.
Seek truth.
But also grow.
Therefore:
YOUR FUTURE MUST NOT WAIT FOR EVERY PERSON FROM YOUR PAST TO UNDERSTAND YOUR PAIN.

GOD CAN WORK IN THE SECRET PLACE
Psalm 139 reminds us that God’s knowledge reaches into places hidden from human eyes.
The seed under soil may be invisible to people.
It is not invisible to God.
Therefore:

THE SECRET PLACE IS NOT A GODLESS PLACE.
When people cannot see what is developing inside you, God can.

JESUS USED THE LANGUAGE OF SEED
John 12:24
Jesus used the image of a grain falling into the earth and producing much fruit.
His words have their own important context connected to His mission.
I do not use them to compare ordinary human suffering with Christ’s unique work.
But the agricultural image teaches something profound:
THE HIDDEN STAGE CAN PRECEDE FRUITFULNESS.
Not everything that disappears beneath the surface is lost.

THE OWNER OF THE PAIN MUST BECOME THE STEWARD OF THE SEED
You know what happened inside you.
But now you also carry responsibility.
What will your pain produce?
Will it poison the seed?
Will it prevent germination?
Will you remain underground because people misunderstood you?
Or will you say:
“This hurt me, but I will not allow the wound to cancel what God placed inside me.”
That is the choice.

DO NOT ALLOW CRITICISM TO BECOME YOUR CLIMATE
People may call you names.
Some criticism may be wrong.
Some may contain truth you need to hear.
Chokmah examines both.
Therefore:
DO NOT REJECT EVERY CRITIC.
DO NOT ACCEPT EVERY CRITIC AS PROPHET.
Listen.
Test.
Correct what is true.
Release what is false.
Then continue growing.

YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO DEFEND YOURSELF AGAINST EVERY WHISPER
There are times to explain.
There are times to correct a false statement.
There are times to follow proper processes.
But there are also times when endless defence begins stealing energy from purpose.
Nehemiah faced opposition while rebuilding Jerusalem’s wall.
He remained focused on the work.
Therefore:
SOME ANSWERS ARE SPOKEN WITH WORDS.
OTHERS ARE SPOKEN BY CONTINUING TO BUILD.
Learn the difference.

WHEN NOBODY CALLS
There may be painful seasons when you ask:
Why did nobody call?
Why did nobody check?
Why did nobody ask how I was doing?
Do not pretend that this does not hurt.
It may hurt deeply.
But do not allow absence of a phone call to become proof that your life has no value.
YOUR VALUE WAS NOT CREATED BY SOMEBODY’S PHONE CALL.
Human care matters.
But your existence has a deeper foundation.

WHEN THEY THINK YOU ARE THE PROBLEM
Sometimes people will misunderstand your response to pain.
They may call your boundary:
arrogance.
They may call your silence:
rebellion.
They may call your questions:
stubbornness.
They may call your refusal to agree:
selfishness.
Sometimes they may be wrong.
Sometimes you may also need correction.
Therefore ask honestly:
“Is there truth in what they are saying?”
If yes:
learn.
If no:
do not wear a false label merely because it was repeated many times.

A LABEL IS NOT A MANUFACTURER’S DESCRIPTION
People may label you.
But the manufacturer knows the design.
Therefore:
DO NOT CONFUSE SOMEBODY’S OPINION OF YOU WITH GOD’S COMPLETE KNOWLEDGE OF YOU.
Remain humble enough to receive correction.
Remain grounded enough not to become whatever somebody calls you.

THE SEED KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT APPLAUSE
Its assignment is simple:
germinate.
grow.
root.
blossom.
fruit.
Therefore your responsibility becomes:
learn.
heal.
grow.
serve.
prepare.
transfer.
Continue.

YOUR PAIN MAY BECOME COMPOST
Here is another powerful image.
Some organic material appears useless after it has decomposed.
But compost can enrich soil.
Likewise, something painful in your history can eventually become material from which wisdom grows.
This does not mean the painful action was good.
It means:
GOD CAN PRODUCE USEFUL WISDOM FROM SOMETHING THAT WAS NOT GOOD IN ITSELF.
That is redemption.

DO NOT EAT THE COMPOST
But remember:
compost belongs around the roots.
It is not the fruit.
Pain may nourish wisdom.
But pain must not become the thing you keep feeding other people.
Therefore:
DO NOT SERVE YOUR WOUND AS THE FRUIT OF YOUR LIFE.
Let the wound nourish:
compassion,
wisdom,
discernment,
and maturity.
Then give people the fruit.

YOUR FRUIT SHOULD TASTE DIFFERENT FROM YOUR PAIN
This deserves its own statement.
If bitterness entered you, your fruit should not be bitterness.
If rejection entered you, your fruit should not be rejection.
If judgment entered you, your fruit should not be judgment without hearing.
Therefore:
WHAT ENTERED YOUR ROOTS DOES NOT HAVE TO DETERMINE THE TASTE OF YOUR FRUIT.
That is transformation.

TO THE PERSON WHO FEELS BURIED
I write to tell you:
Do not conclude too quickly that hiddenness means death.
Do not allow people’s failure to understand you to become your final understanding of yourself.
Do not deny your pain.
But do not build your identity around it.
Do not make everyone who fails to understand you an enemy.
Do not make every criticism false merely because it hurts.
Do not make every feeling a final verdict.
Remain teachable.
Remain connected to God.
And grow.

TO THE PERSON WHO CANNOT SEE THE LIGHT YET
Roots often develop before the shoot becomes visible.
Therefore:
DO THE WORK THAT BELONGS TO THE HIDDEN SEASON.
Pray.
Think.
Learn.
Read.
Heal.
Correct.
Forgive.
Set boundaries.
Build your character.
Write what must be written.
Prepare.
You may not yet see the full tree.
But take care of the seed.

TO THE PERSON WHO THINKS THEY HAVE BEEN FORGOTTEN
Remember:
You did not create yourself.
You did not manufacture the life inside you.
Therefore ask:
“CREATOR, WHAT DID YOU PUT IN ME THAT THIS SEASON HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO DESTROY?”
That may become the beginning of your next chapter.

MY OPEN LETTER TO YOU
Dear wounded seed,
You may feel:
covered,
pressed,
forgotten,
misunderstood,
and alone.
But do not confuse:
being underground
with
being without life.
Do not confuse:
being unseen
with
being unknown to God.
Do not confuse:
rejection
with
absence of purpose.
Do not confuse:
another person’s judgment
with
the final verdict over your life.
Listen to correction.
Seek wise counsel.
Respect evidence.
Take responsibility for your mistakes.
But never surrender the responsibility to become what God designed you to become.
Push through the soil.
Grow around the stone where necessary.
Search for the light.
Develop roots.
Take your time.
Do not compare yourself with the tree already giving fruit beside you.
Your season is your season.
Your seed carries its own design.
And one day:
the same life that looked hidden may become visible.
The shoot may become a tree.
The tree may produce branches.
Birds may come.
Bees may visit.
Flowers may appear.
Fruit may feed.
Shade may protect somebody tired from the sun.
And people may benefit from something they could not see while you were underground.
But when that day comes:
DO NOT SAY, “LOOK WHAT REJECTION MADE ME.”
Say:
“LOOK WHAT GOD WAS ABLE TO BRING OUT OF THE SEED DESPITE THE REJECTION.”
Give glory to the Source.
FINAL WORD TO THE WOUNDED SEED
You may have been:
misunderstood,
ignored,
judged,
criticized,
or left alone with questions.
But you still have responsibility for what comes next.
You cannot control everybody’s opinion.
You can control whether you surrender your heart to bitterness.
You cannot force everybody to listen.
You can continue seeking truth and wise people who will listen responsibly.
You cannot rewrite yesterday.
You can decide what yesterday is permitted to produce tomorrow.
Therefore:
GERMINATE.
Not to prove people wrong.
GERMINATE BECAUSE LIFE IS INSIDE YOU.
Grow.
Not for revenge.
GROW BECAUSE PURPOSE REQUIRES FRUIT.
And when you become strong enough to provide shade:
do not ask the tired person beneath your branches:
“Were you there when I was under the soil?”
Give shade.
When the bee comes:
give the flower.
When the hungry person comes:
give the fruit.
Because mature purpose does not spend its whole future punishing people for not understanding its hidden season.
THE SEED WAS HIDDEN.
THE ROOT WAS DEVELOPING.
THE SOIL WAS HEAVY.
BUT LIFE WAS STILL THERE.
And if you can say:
“Something in my former life died,”
then perhaps one day you will also be able to say:
“BUT I AM NOT DEAD.”
I am growing.
I am learning.
I am becoming.
I am still connected to the Source.
And what God placed inside me has not yet finished speaking.
With understanding from one wounded traveller to another,
Archbishop Professor M. E. Malungani
*The pain is yours.
The seed is yours to steward. But the life inside the seed comes from God.*
