Bokgaga Baptist Youth Department

Bokgaga Baptist Youth Department We are youth of Bokgaga Baptist. We are saved and united in Christ. Our purpose is to give ourselves to Christ and commit ourselves to his work.

We position ourselves as mobile, young and upcoming youth in the Capricon region. We are part of Capricon BYD and fall under Capricon mother body which is Capricon Regional Executive. We fall under the umbrella of Baptist Convention of South Africa. We are guided by the Holy Spirit. We aim to empower ourselves through learning and understanding His Word so we become freer souls. We encourage each

other to cease education opportunities so we become a powerful church that gives ourselves to the Lord through financial commitment. We encourage each other to do well academically so we can tithe and bring offerings to the house of the Lord. We love each other and support each other through thick and thin. We believe that as a united youth, we shall conquer the devil and his petty mission. We progress in our lives. It is our understanding, through God's revelation, that God isn't only interested in us in the church - He is equally interested in us in our family lives, academic lives, work place life, community life, political life etc etc

Thus says the Lord: "Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment." - It is under this view that we aim to have a ball yet please Christ still.

44th June 16 commemoration message

We would like to take this opportunity to wish all our youth a happy Youth Day.

As we commemorate this day, let us remember the protest which resulted in a wave of protests across the country known as the Soweto uprising of 1976. The protests came in response to multiple issues with the Bantu Education Act and the government edict in 1974 that Afrikaans will be used as medium of instruction for certain subjects in black schools.

During the uprisings, 13-year-old Hector Peterson was shot and killed by security police who opened fire on protesting students. Along with Hastings Ndlovu, another student on that fateful day, was shot killed by the police.

As we commemorate this day, we are not oblivious of the challenges plaguing the youth in South Africa today. Firstly, we are fighting against the Coronavirus pandemic by adhering to various regulations promulgated by government. Coronavirus is not the only pandemic we are battling as a country, we are similarly plagued by racism pandemic and many other forms of -isms such as cronyism, elitism and neocolonialism. Unemployment rate, especially among the youth, is rising.

Meanwhile, structural patriarchy which has enabled gender based violence (GBV) is rearing its ugly head. Indeed, GBV and patriarchy are pandemics on their own and cannot go unchallenged. Thus, we strongly condemn GBV against women. Moreover, this is not the time for “what-about-ism” as we need all men to rise up to the challenge of changing their attitudes towards women. Men need to start treating women as equal partners in society.

We cannot keep quiet and fold our arms when our sisters, daughters, nieces and mothers are r***d and killed in cold blood. Such acts of barbaric violence need to come to an immediate end.

We encourage men in various sectors of society to have conversations about ending violence against women. It is men perpetuating this senseless violence and it is men who must stop it. To give effect to this, we call on all men to call each other out even in what may be deemed as subliminal gendered views of women, for that exactly is how violence breeds against women.

We cannot exhaust issues facing our youth in this post. However, let us take this time to reflect where our country is coming from, where we are going if the status quo prevails, where we would like South Africa to go and our role in shaping the desired direction for our country.

Let us also celebrate the sacrifices made by the youth of 1976.

We call on all young people to seize education and employment opportunities. Also, young people can start their own businesses in their various fields of their expertise and or in any commercially viable sector. Indeed, Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) have a role to play in fighting unemployment today. The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) in this regard, exists for the sole purpose of ensuring youth SMMEs receiving government funding so youth can play a meaningful role in the economy.

We wish everyone a beautiful Youth Day punctuated by a meaningful reflection as stated above.

In closing, 1 Timothy 4:12 reads: “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.”

BCYD STATEMENT ON THE RECENT XENOPHOBIC ATTACKS AND CASES OF FEMICIDES.

05 SEPTEMBER 2019

Baptist Convention Youth Department (BCYD) of South Africa condemn in the strongest terms possible, the attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa. In the same vein, the department lambaste the r**e culture and murders perpetrated by men against women.

Over the past couple of weeks, the country has been gripped by sporadic acts of violence against foreign nationals. The untruths spread about those seeking refuge and a better life in South Africa is that foreign nationals are peddling drugs, take away job opportunities from locals and are generally criminal. This couldn’t have been further from the truth. Criminals are criminals and there is no better description than this. Thus, acts of criminality cannot be attributed to a specific group of people. While there are foreign nationals who might be engaging in criminal activities in the country, the same can be said about South Africans who are engaging in criminal activities.

As a youth wing of the Baptist Convention of South Africa, we are totally dismayed by these attacks on our African brothers and sisters. This goes against our values as the Christian community. We learn from scriptures that in Christ we are one. In addition we call on the police to continue arresting anyone who breaks the law, either through opportunistic looting of shops owned by foreign nationals or pure acts of criminality which present themselves through the attacks of foreign nationals.

In the meantime, the department wants to remind South Africans of their very recent past where struggle stalwarts sought refuge in other African countries during the fight against apartheid. “It was our African brothers and sisters on the continent who supported the fight against apartheid until the advent of democracy in South Africa. This calls us to, at the very least, be empathetic towards foreign nationals in South Africa who are in this country for various reasons.

In the midst of the attacks against foreign nationals, the crime of ra**ng women and killing them in cold blood has to the country being shocked, dismayed and angry. As a result, the department would like to add its voice in denouncing these senseless criminal behaviour which has no place anywhere in the world. “As men in the country, we hang our heads in shame. However, we quickly need to recover from this shame and begin to engage in meaningful conversations as men in a bid to bring about solutions to ensure we treat all women with love and care. Moreover, we call on all men to desist from committing crimes against women. “History will Judge us harshly if the good men who are left, keep quiet and only watch in horror as these senseless crimes continue to take place under our watch. We need to begin to be part of the solution. No man is entitled to the body of any woman. In fact, we need to be role models as men because we were all raised by women.

Indeed, as historical figure Martin Luther King Jr once said: “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends”. We call for all men to stand together and say enough is enough! Not in our name shall these crimes be committed.

In light of the current shameful state of affairs in the country, we call for immediate reforms. “We are calling for reforms in which the legal justice system in the country addresses the issue of crime. We are not calling for legislative reforms, however, we are calling for the criminal justice system to uphold the rule of law without any fear or favour and for the courts to impose harsh sentences on those who are found guilty of having committed a crime. This will serve as a deterrent to would-be criminals.

Over and above praying that God intervenes and bring an immediate end to the unrest gripping the country, we call for all South Africans to exercise maximum restraint and treat all women with care. “If anyone suspects either a foreign national or a South African of engaging in criminal activities, we call upon all of us to report such acts of criminality to the police so the law can take its cause. Taking the law into your own hands is totally unacceptable as this will render the country ungovernable, which is extremely undesirable in any legitimate democracy.

On the whole, as BCYD, we are for love, peace, harmony and respect for human dignity of all women and all people who find themselves in our shores.
