*Summary Notes on Joseph A Type of Christ by Bishop Dr Colin Nyathi.*
Theme Scripture:
Genesis 30:1,22-24.
*A. Introduction.*
Joseph was born from the barren womb of Rachel. There is something special about barren wombs that when opened produce sons and daughters of destiny.
Sarah's womb produced Isaac.
Rebekah - Jacob.
Manoah's wife - Samson
Rachel - Joseph
Hannah- Samuel
Elizabeth- John.
*B. 18 Striking similarities betwewn the life of Joseph and that of Jesus Christ and the lessons we learn.*
1. A shepherd of His father's sheep.
Genesis 37:2
John 10:11,27-29.
Jesus states that He is a good shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep.
May God give us hearts of shepherds... of love.
2. His father loved him dearly.
Genesis 37:3
Matthew 3:17
Joseph's father Israel loved him to the point of making him a coat of many colours.
Speaking of Jesus, God said, "this is my beloved Son in whom i am well pleased.
Jesus was loved by His Father.
Romans 5:5b.
3. He was hated by his brothers.
Genesis 37:4
John 7:5
Joseph's brothers could not speak to him on friendly terms... same thing with Jesus... His own brothers could not believe in Him.
Because of your vision and destiny... some may seek to hurt you.
4. Sent by father to brothers.
Genesis 37:13-14
Hebrews 2:10-12
Each of us has an apostolic assignment.
5. Others plotted to harm them.
Genesis 37:19-20
John 11:53
Joseph's brothers wanted to kill him for his dreams and favour he had with their father.
The Pharisees and some Jews planned to kill Jesus for the favour He had with God.
When you are in the will of God evil people will seek to harm you.
6. Robes taken from them.
Genesis 37:23
John 19:23-24
Joseph was stripped of his cost of many colours.
With Jesus his garment was divided.
Robes speak of gifts and talents. The enemy seeks to take them away from you.
7. Taken to Egypt.
Genesis 37:8
Matthew 2:14-15
Joseph was sold for 20 shekels of silver and brought to Egypt.
He was also brought to Egypt by his parents after a decree issued by Herod.
Egypt speaks of a wilderness period.. a place of isolation, exclusion solitude...we must expect these.
8. Sold for the price of a slave.
Genesis 37:28
Matthew 26:15
The Ishmaelites bought Joseph for 20 shekels.
Jesus was sold out by Judas for 30 pieces of silver.
Silver speaks of redemption.
Even if those close to you abandon you.. God won't.
9. Tempted.
Genesis 39:7
Matthew 4:1
Temptation denotes a test with a view to promotion.
10. Falsely accused.
Genesis 39:16-18
Potiphar's wife accused Joseph of making sport with her.
For Jesus the chief Priests and whole council kept trying to obtain false testimony against him.
When you serve God faithfully, carnal people will accuse you of all sorts of things.
11. Bound in chains
Genesis 39:20
Matthew 27:2
Joseph's master took him and put him in jail.
They bound Jesus and led him away.
When carrying an assignment from God, the enemy will seek to bind you. Know that if the Son of God sets you free.. you shall be free indeed.
12. Placed with two other prisoners - one who was saved and the other lost.
Genesis 40:2-3
Luke 23:32
Joseph was in prison
with two other men a cup bearer and a baker.
Jesus was crucified alongside two criminals.
One was then saved the other lost.
13. Exalted after suffering.
Genesis 41:41
Philippians 2:9-11
Joseph was put in charge over Pharoah's household then over the land of Egypt.
Jesus became man
Given 39 lashes on his back
Became obedient to the death of the cross
Ridiculed by man etc..
For this reason God highly exalted Him.
14. Both 30 years old at the beginning of their public recognition.
Genesis 41:46
Luke 3:23
Joseph was 30 years old when he stood before Pharoah.
Jesus began his public ministry at 30.
15. Both wept.
Genesis 42:24
Genesis 45:2,14-15.
Genesis 46:29
John 11:35
Joseph was full of compassion.
Jesus was also a man of compaasion.
16. Forgave those who wronged him.
Genesis 45:1-15.
Luke 23:32-34
Joseph forgave his brothers for the many years they wronged him.
Genesis 45:7-8, 10&15.
Jesus forgave men that lied about Him, abused Him and nailed Him to the cross.
17. Saved the nations.
Genesis 45:7
Matthew 1:21
John 3:16
Literally nations were saved from death by starvation through Joseph's plan.
God's plan of salvation saved the remnant in the earth through Jesus Christ.
18. What men did to hurt them, God turned to good.
Genesis 50:20
1 Corinthians 2:7-8
Joseph said "do not be afraid, for I am in God's place. As for you, you meant for evil against me, but God meant it for good."
*Conclusion.*
Romans 8:28.
And we knpw that all things work for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His righteuos purpose.
