7 Signs You May Be Holding on to Something God Is Asking You to Release
Sometimes the hardest part of moving forward with God is letting go of what we have become comfortable holding. It could be a habit, relationship, ambition, offense, fear, or even a plan we deeply wanted.
1. You Keep Losing Your Peace Over It
You constantly wrestle with the same issue because you haven't fully surrendered it to God.
“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7
2. You Know It Is Pulling You Away From God
If something repeatedly weakens your relationship with Christ, it's worth examining whether you should continue holding on to it.
Anything that consistently takes God's place in your heart deserves serious attention.
“Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” — Colossians 3:2
3. You Keep Making Excuses for It
You know something needs to change, but you repeatedly find reasons to justify keeping it.
“Search me, O God, and know my heart...” — Psalm 139:23
4. It Keeps You Trapped in the Past
Some things cannot be carried into the next season without preventing you from moving forward.
“Forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before...” — Philippians 3:13
5. You Are More Afraid of Losing It Than of Disobeying God
When holding on becomes more important than obeying God, your priorities may need to be examined.
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.” — John 14:15
6. God Keeps Bringing It to Your Attention
Through Scripture, prayer, wise counsel, or repeated conviction, the same issue may keep coming back to your attention.
Don't automatically assume every uncomfortable feeling is God's voice—but don't ignore genuine conviction either. Test everything against Scripture.
“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:21
7. You Know You Cannot Take It Where God Is Leading You
Sometimes moving forward requires releasing what no longer belongs in the journey.
“Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us...” — Hebrews 12:1
FINAL TRUTH
Surrender can be painful, but holding on to something God is asking you to release can cost even more. Ask God for wisdom, examine your heart through His Word, and be willing to let go when He makes His will clear.
PRAYER
Father, search my heart and reveal anything I am holding that You are asking me to release. Give me courage to surrender my plans, fears, offenses, habits, and desires when they do not align with Your will. Help me trust You enough to let go and follow wherever You lead. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.
