Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, the start of the Lenten season. But today is the perfect day to prepare yourself for this holy period. Here are some ideas on what you can do today:

Attend a Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras celebration - enjoy a last hurrah before the solemnity of Lent.

Confess your sins - take advantage of the Sacrament of Reconciliation to prepare your heart and mind for the coming season.

Reflect on your Lenten goals - take some time to pray and think about what you hope to achieve during Lent.

Fast - observe a partial fast today as a way of preparing your body for the rigors of Lenten fasting.

Whatever you choose to do, let this day be a time of preparation and reflection as we begin this sacred season.

As we begin the holy season of Lent, it is essential to prepare our hearts for the spiritual journey that lies ahead. Lent is a time of fasting, prayer, and self-reflection, and it can be a challenging but rewarding experience. Here are a few ways to prepare your heart for Lent:

Set clear spiritual goals - Take some time to reflect on your spiritual journey and set some specific goals for what you want to achieve during Lent. This could be a commitment to daily prayer or reading the Bible, attending mass more frequently, or practicing acts of charity.

Reflect on your life and seek forgiveness - Take some time to reflect on your life and the ways in which you may have fallen short. Seek forgiveness for your sins, and make a commitment to work towards being a better person.

Fast and give alms - Fasting is an essential part of Lent, and it helps us to focus on what is truly important. Consider giving up something that is a source of distraction or temptation for you. Also, try to give alms or do acts of charity for those in need.

Attend Mass - Mass is an essential part of our faith, and it is a great way to prepare your heart for Lent. Attend Mass more frequently during Lent and reflect on the teachings of Jesus.

Preparing your heart for Lent takes time and effort, but the spiritual benefits are well worth it. As we begin this holy season, let us all commit to growing closer to God and becoming better versions of ourselves.

As Catholics, Lent is a very important time of the year. It is a time when we reflect on our faith, our relationship with God, and our journey towards becoming better people.

But why do we celebrate Lent? The answer is simple: Lent is a period of preparation for the celebration of Easter. During this time, we focus on prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, as a way to deepen our spiritual lives and grow closer to God.

By fasting, we learn to control our desires and focus on what truly matters.
By praying, we strengthen our relationship with God and open our hearts to His love. And by giving alms, we show compassion and generosity towards those who are less fortunate than us.

Lent is a time of reflection, self-discipline, and spiritual renewal. It is a reminder of the sacrifices that Jesus made for us and an opportunity for us to grow in our faith and become better versions of ourselves. So let us embrace this season with open hearts and minds, and may it lead us to a deeper understanding of God's love and mercy.

SECOND WEEK OF EASTER YEAR C.

*FEAST OF SAINT MARK, EVANGELIST*

FIRST READING
1ST PETER 5: 5b - 14

Beloved: Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility towards one another, for โ€œGod opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.โ€ Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that in due time he may exalt you. Cast all your anxieties on him, for he cares about you. Be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experience of suffering is required of your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, establish, and strengthen you. To him be the dominion for ever and ever. Amen. By Silvanus, a faithful brother as I regard him, I have written briefly to you, exhorting and declaring that this is the true grace of God; stand fast in it. She who is at Babylon, who is likewise chosen, sends you greetings; and so does my son Mark. Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you that are in Christ.

*The Word of the Lord.*

RESPONSORIAL PSALM
Psalm 89: 2 - 3, 6 - 7, 16 - 17 (R.) 2a

*R/. I will sing for ever of your mercies, O Lord.*
Or:
*Alleluia.*

I will sing for ever of your mercies, O Lord,
through all ages my mouth will proclaim your fidelity.
I have declared your mercy is established for ever;
your fidelity stands firm as the heavens. R/.

The heavens praise your wonders, O Lord,
your fidelity in the assembly of your holy ones.
For who in the skies can compare with the Lord,
or who is like the Lord among the heavenly powers? R/.

How blessed the people who know your praise,
who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face,
who find their joy every day in your name,
who make your justice their joyful acclaim. R/.

ALLELUIA
1st Corinthians 1: 23a - 24b

Alleluia.
_We preach Christ crucified; the power of God and the wisdom of God._
Alleluia.

GOSPEL
MARK 16: 15 - 20

At that time: [Appearing to the Eleven,] Jesus said to them, โ€œGo into all the world and preach the Gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptised will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.โ€ So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that attended it. Amen.

FRIDAY IN THE OCTAVE OF EASTER YEAR C.

FIRST READING
ACTS 4: 1 - 12

In those days: As Peter and John were speaking to the people, [after the lame man was healed,] the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them, annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. But many of those who heard the word believed; and the number of the men came to about five thousand. On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem, with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. And when they had set them in their midst, they inquired, โ€œBy what power or by what name did you do this?โ€ Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, โ€œRulers of the people and elders, if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a cripple, by what means this man has been healed, be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by him this man is standing before you well. This is the stone which was rejected by you builders, but which has become the cornerstone. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.โ€

*The Word of the Lord.*

RESPONSORIAL PSALM
_Psalm 118: 1 - 2, 4, 22 - 27ab (R.) 22_

_*R/. The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.*_
Or:
_*Alleluia*_

Give praise to the LORD, for he is good;
his mercy endures forever.
Let the house of Israel say,
โ€œHis mercy endures forever.โ€
Let those who fear the Lord say,
โ€œHis mercy endures forever.โ€ R/.

The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone.
By the Lord has this been done,
a marvel in our eyes.
This is the day the Lord has made;
let us rejoice in it and be glad. R/.

O Lord, grant salvation;
O Lord, grant success.
Blest is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
We bless you from the house of the Lord;
the Lord is God, and has given us light. R/.

*ALLELUIA*
Psalm 118: 24

Alleluia.
_This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Alleluia

*GOSPEL*
JOHN 21: 1 - 14

At that time: Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he revealed himself in this way. Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, โ€œI am going fishing.โ€ They said to him, โ€œWe will go with you.โ€ They went out and got into the boat; but that night they caught nothing. Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, โ€œChildren, have you any fish?โ€ They answered him, โ€œNo.โ€ He said to them, โ€œCast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.โ€ So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, for the quantity of fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, โ€œIt is the Lord!โ€ When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his clothes, for he was stripped for work, and sprang into the sea. But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off. When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish lying on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, โ€œBring some of the fish that you have just caught.โ€ So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three of them; and although there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, โ€œCome and have breakfast.โ€ Now none of the disciples dared ask him, โ€œWho are you?โ€ They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish.This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

FIRST READING
ACTS 3:11 - 26

In those days: While the lame man who had been cured clung to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them in the portico called Solomonโ€™s, astounded. And when Peter saw it he addressed the people, โ€œMen of Israel, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we had made him walk? The God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified his servant Jesus, whom you delivered up and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release him. But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, and killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. And his name, by faith in his name, has made this man strong whom you see and know; and the faith which is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all. โ€œAnd now, brethren, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ should suffer, he thus fulfilled. Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, whom heaven must receive until the time for establishing all that God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old. Moses said, โ€˜The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet from your brethren as he raised me up. You shall listen to him in whatever he tells you. And it shall be that every soul that does not listen to that prophet shall be destroyed from the people.โ€™ And all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and those who came afterwards, also proclaimed these days. You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant which God gave to your fathers, saying to Abraham, โ€˜And in your posterity shall all the families of the earth be blessed.โ€™ God, having raised up his servant, sent him to you first, to bless you in turning every one of you from your wickedness.โ€

*The Word of the Lord*

RESPONSORIAL PSALM
Psalm 8: 2ab, 5 - 9 (R.) 2ab

_*R/. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name through all the earth!*_
Or:
_*Alleluia*_

O Lord, our Lord, how majestic
is your name through all the earth!
What is man that you should keep him in mind,
the son of man that you care for him? R/.

Yet you have made him little lower than the angels;
with glory and honour you crowned him,
gave him power over the works of your hands. R/.

You put all things under his feet,
all of them, sheep and oxen,
yes, even the cattle of the fields,
birds of the air, and fish of the sea
that make their way through the waters. R/.

*ALLELUIA*
Psalm 118: 24

Alleluia.
_This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it._
Alleluia.

GOSPEL
LUKE 24: 35 - 48

At that time: The two disciples told what had happened on the road to Emmaus and how Jesus was known to them in the breaking of the bread. As they were saying this, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, โ€œPeace to you.โ€ But they were startled and frightened, and supposed that they saw a spirit. And he said to them, โ€œWhy are you troubled, and why do questionings rise in your hearts? See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself; handle me, and see; for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have.โ€ And when he had said this he showed them his hands and his feet. And while they still disbelieved for joy, and wondered, he said to them, โ€œHave you anything here to eat?โ€ They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate before them. Then he said to them, โ€œThese are my words which I spoke to you, while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled.โ€ Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and said to them, โ€œThus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.โ€
