Charity begins with Christ
By our baptism, then, we were buried with him and shared his death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from death by the glorious power of the Father, so also we might live a new life.

Psalms 37: 16-17
A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked. For the arms of the wicked shall be broken: but the LORD upholdeth the righteous.

Inspiration
It is better to be a Christian who does not have much in this world, in comparison to being a wicked person who abounds in wealth. There will come a day where all of these earthly things will pass away and we will be faced with what matters the most – our eternity. The wicked will have to account for their actions and face their consequences and their wealth will not be able to get them out of it.

Prayer
Dear God, I pray that I will never lose sight of what truly matters in this life. May my mind always be concerned with your Kingdom, Lord, and not in amassing wealth on this earth. I know that everything I attain on earth is temporary. May mind never lose sight of what truly matters – spending eternity with you. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Galatians 3: 27
For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

Inspiration
There is physical baptism with water, but here Paul seems to speak of spiritual baptism with the Spirit of God. It is that baptism that made us God's children through faith and causes us to "put on" Christ. To put on Christ would be to put on his character, Christlikeness.

Prayer
We are your children, O Lord, for you have made us such. By faith, you adopted us; by the Spirit, you sanctified us to yourself. As physical children resemble their parents, so make us also to resemble you, being your spiritual children. Let us strive today to live in a way that lets all see that we are the children of God indeed. Amen.

Luke 10: 29
But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?

Inspiration
When Jesus gives us instructions, do we willingly obey, or do we try to negotiate? Do we want to love all of our neighbors, or do we try to select just the ones that are easy to love? We must guard against trying to bend Jesus’ words to fit our will. Instead, we must hear all of His words- even the ones that challenge us- so that we can be prepared to walk in full obedience to Him.

Prayer
Jesus, You call me to love my neighbor. And I confess that I have not loved all of my neighbors the way that You love me. I’ve looked down on some and shut others out. Please help me to see all people as my neighbors and to love them with Your love, so that I may serve You by serving whoever You place in my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Galatians 5: 22 -23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Inspiration
The Spirit produces in us all the Christian graces, which we would usually refer to as positive character traits. These graces indicate a changed heart that will naturally keep the Law of God. For love is the fulfilling of the law. And there is no valid law against these virtues or any actions that flow out of them.

Prayer
Work in us, O Spirit of God, cultivating and producing a garden full of all of your fruit. We seek to be holy and live in love. We plead for you to work in us according to the Father's will to create in us the image of the Son. Let us seek then, O God, your appointed means of grace, your Word, and trust you to so work! Amen.

Psalms 37: 1
Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.

Inspiration
Often it is too easy to want what others have. Particularly when we see others who have built up wealth, comfort, and prestige through dishonest actions that have hurt others. God warns us to set aside such envy. When we covet the things that are attained by evil means, we open ourselves up to the temptation to follow their ways.

Prayer
Father God, protect my heart from all envy and jealousy. Teach me to not dwell on the riches and comforts of evil men. Turn my attention to the riches of Your kingdom so that I may dwell on heavenly things. Help me to remember how richly blessed I am because of knowing You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

1 John 4: 21
And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.

Inspiration
Jesus summed up the whole Law of God in the command to love God and to love one's neighbor. Here, John the Apostle tells us that he who commands us to love God commands us to love our brothers in Christ as well. The two are inseparable. We cannot keep or break the one command without keeping or breaking the other.

Prayer
Lord, let us examine ourselves to see if we are walking in love for our brothers in Christ and in love for you. We cannot love the Father without loving His children also. We cannot love God and hate our brother. Lead us in the paths of love, which are the paths of holiness and of keeping your Word. For love is the fulfilling of the Law. Amen.

Acts 16: 7
After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.

Inspiration
God has a plan for us. And sometimes, His plans are different from ours. Even the good things that we want to do may interfere with doing the better things that He has in mind for us. We must keep watching and listening for His instruction. And when we encounter obstacles, we must seek Him in prayer for further direction.

Prayer
God, thank You for giving me a place in Your church, and for using me to share Your good news with others. Help me to understand where You are leading me, so that my plans may align with Your plans. If I should seek a different course, please gently direct me to where You want me to go. In Jesus’ name, amen.

1 Corinthians 15: 45
And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.

Inspiration
Adam was formed from the earth, and his body was given life. So we too have life in our bodies. But in Jesus, we are promised life beyond our bodies, as His resurrection has secured for us the spiritual bodies of eternity, no longer subject to pain, death, and decay.

Prayer
Lord, thank You for the gift of life. And thank You for giving Jesus victory over death, and for calling me to new life. You have given me hope, through the resurrection. And I take comfort in knowing that when my body is gone, I too will share in Your victory for all eternity. In Jesus’ name, amen.

1 John 4: 10
Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Inspiration
Propitiation is a seldom used and little understood term but still conveys a very important Biblical concept. When Christ "propitiated" our sins on the cross, he make full satisfaction to the righteous demands of God's justice. He satisfied the wrath of God in our place and bore in his body the pain of a Roman cross. That is love.

Prayer
O Lover of my soul, when you revealed to me that love with which you loved me from all eternity, it was then that I knew what love really was. You taught me what it is to love on the cross of Calvary. Teach me to love you and others the way that you have loved me. Show me wherein I have failed to truly love, and help me to follow the example of your steps of love and holiness. Amen.

Deuteronomy 11: 15
For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land.

Inspiration
The poor will always be with us. Does that mean that we should give up on solving poverty? Quite the opposite- it means that we will always have a duty to help our neighbors in need. As children of our generous Heavenly Father, we too ought to be generous and prepared to help where our help is needed. In doing so, we fulfill the law and honor the love of God that is within us.

Prayer
Father, thank You for blessing my life in so many ways. Please help me to be a faithful steward of the resources that You have given me. Open my eyes to the needy around me so that I may share with them out of the portion that You have given me. Use me to share Your love, for the sake of Your kingdom and the glory of Your name. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Romans 5: 5
And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

Inspiration
Hope is often used in modern English to mean a possible but uncertain desire, as in the phrase "I hope so. " But in the Bible, it is used very differently. It is used in KJV, at least, in the older English meaning of a "an eager expectation of some longed for future event. " Our Christian experience strengthens our hope, for God's love is still in us working powerfully through all that we go through as Christians.

Prayer
O Giver of true hope and Comforter of our souls, we have a sure and blessed future that awaits us. We know that your promises will not and cannot fail because He who promised is faithful. Your love is shed abroad in our hearts, and we love you because you first loved us. Let the hope you have given us encourage us, we pray, in the midst of even the most difficult circumstances. Amen.

John 1: 17
For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

Inspiration
We’re all familiar with the idea of laws. We know the Ten Commandments, and we understand all of the rules that have been built on top of them. But now that we have received grace from Jesus, are we done with the law? Not at all. Rather, we see how the law has pointed to Jesus all along, revealing His character, and helping us see our need for His grace, by which he empowers us to live for Him.

Prayer
Jesus, thank You for the ancient law and for Your word, which have led the way to You. Though I could never keep the law on my own, You have given me Your grace, which covers my sins. Remain in me, Lord, and live through me, so that I might dwell in Your truth, and Your grace may flow through me to others. In Jesus’ name, amen.
