Saturday, 6 June 2026, the people of the Diocese of False Bay gathered at All Saints, Belhar, for the re-launch of the Guild of St Christopher, a ministry dedicated to the Christian formation and nurture of children within our parishes. The gathering brought together Sunday School educators, clergy, and lay leaders who share a common calling: to accompany children as they grow in faith, wisdom, and knowledge of God's love. The day began with Morning Prayer, led by the Rector of All Saints, the Revd Lundi Joko, together with the Revd Leticia Singh. As the Church gathered in prayer, participants were reminded that all ministry finds its source and purpose in God, who calls His people to proclaim the Gospel to every generation. The prayers set the tone for a day of reflection, learning, and discernment as the Diocese considered its ministry afresh among children.
Following words of welcome from Revd Joko, the gathering was addressed by Bishop Stafford Moses. In a thoughtful and inspiring message, the Bishop reflected on the sacred responsibility entrusted to those who teach the faith to children. He reminded educators that children often learn not only from what is taught but also from what is lived. The witness of a teacher's words, actions, character, and faithfulness leaves a lasting impression on young hearts. Drawing attention to the example of Christ, who welcomed children and blessed them, the Bishop encouraged educators to recognise that they participate in God's mission whenever they teach, guide, and care for children. He called upon Sunday School teachers to be mindful of the example they set, remembering that they are not merely conveying information but helping to form disciples of Jesus Christ.
The programme continued with an engaging presentation by Mrs Delmaine Schoonraad on creative lesson presentation. Participants explored practical ways of communicating biblical truths in meaningful and age-appropriate ways, ensuring that the Gospel remains both accessible and transformative for children in today's context. The day also provided opportunities for collaborative learning and theological reflection. Through group discussions, participants identified some of the challenges facing children in contemporary society and explored how Scripture and the Church's lectionary can speak prophetically and pastorally into these realities. Together they developed lesson plans that seek to connect the timeless message of the Gospel with the lived experiences of young people.
During the afternoon session, facilitated by the Chaplain of the Guild of St Christopher, the Revd Leticia Singh, participants reflected on the future life and ministry of the Guild within the Diocese. The discussion centred on the vision, purpose, and hopes for this renewed ministry, recognising that the formation of children is not the responsibility of a few individuals but a calling shared by the whole Church. The re-launch of the Guild of St Christopher marks more than the revival of an organisation; it represents a renewed diocesan commitment to raising children in the faith and creating spaces where they may encounter the living Christ. In a world where many voices compete for the attention of the young, the Church remains called to be a faithful witness, nurturing children in the knowledge of God's love and inviting them into the life of His Kingdom.
As participants departed after a time of fellowship and lunch, there was a shared sense of hope and purpose. The seeds planted during the day will, by God's grace, bear fruit in the lives of children throughout the Diocese of False Bay. May the Guild of St Christopher continue to be an instrument through which young people are formed as disciples, rooted in Scripture, grounded in prayer, and equipped to follow Christ in every season of life.
