Humilityâgenuine humilityâis the most delightfully winning personality trait. Because it isnât sullen dreariness about our worthlessness. As one person famously put it: âhumility isnât thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less.â
Humility means we seek to make the most of the other people we encounter in our lives, rather than making everything about ourselves. Jesus illustrated this with a story about Jewish seating arrangements at dinner parties. Each seat came with a level of honour; those at the top of the table were the most prestigious. Those at the âlowerâ end were the least.
Jesusâ challenge in the story is to âtake the lowest placeâ. Now, with all such things, we must examine our hearts as well as our actions. Weâre not to sit at the lowest place so that others can see just how humble we are! Humility comes without fanfare and fuss. It finds joy in seeing others grow and succeed.
Taking the âlowest placeâ means letting the other person finish their story, even though you have a more interesting one to tell. Itâs cleaning the toilets at church, even though you have much more public talents. Itâs letting others speak in Bible study, even though you have all the answers.
Itâs the heart of Jesus Christ who took the lowest seat when He came to earth, giving up heavenâs throne to die on a criminalâs cross. He thought of Himself less, and others more.
