EVENING DEVOTION

In the Old Testament, Jeremiah was a prophet delivering a message from God to His people who had been exiled to Babylon. This certainly isn’t where they wanted to be. It wasn’t the plan. Instead of God rescuing them right away, He tells them to “build homes, and plan to stay” (Jeremiah 29:5 NLT) and to “work for the peace … of the city where I sent you into exile.” (Jeremiah 29:7 NLT)

A few verses later, God says, … “You will be in Babylon for seventy years. But then I will come and do for you all the good things I have promised, and I will bring you home again.” Jeremiah 29:10 NLT (emphasis added)

Seventy years! Most of us aren’t patient enough to wait for something for 70 seconds, let alone 70 years.

All of that is the context of the very next verse that you’ve likely heard before: “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11 NLT

Here are three things about God’s plan you should know:

1.) Good plans can take time. God told the Israelites they would be in captivity for 70 years. A lot of the people hearing that message would never see the other side of that promise. Sometimes, it might feel like it’s taking forever for God to reveal His plan to you. The reality is that you may never see the full outcome of what God has for your life—you could be impacting generations down the road and not even know it!

2.) Waiting seasons aren’t wasted seasons. Notice that God didn’t tell the Israelites to just wait and do nothing for seventy years. He told them to work for the peace and prosperity of the city He sent them to. Wherever you are right now, God can use you! Don’t miss out on making an impact for the Kingdom now by waiting for a season God hasn’t put you in yet.

3.) His plans are good. Whatever season you find yourself in right now, the promise of Jeremiah 29:11 holds true: God does have good plans for you—plans for a future and a hope.

GOD BLESS YOU!

MORNING DEVOTION

What should I do?

You’ve probably asked that question a lot, especially if you have a major life decision to face, like where to go to college or what career to pick.

It’s a similar question a religious leader asked Jesus in the Bible: “Which is the greatest commandment of the Law?” (Matthew 22:36 NIV) In other words: what should I do?

In the next verse, we see Jesus’ reply: “’You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Matthew 22:37-39 NIV, emphasis added)

When we try to figure out what God’s plan is for our lives, we can start with these two things Jesus told us to do:

1.) Love God.

2.) Love other people.

You’re probably thinking, that sounds great, but how do I know where to go to college or what career to pick?

That’s a fair question. Here’s the good news: If you’re following Jesus and surrounding yourself with godly people, the Holy Spirit will help guide your decisions.

You might be torn between two colleges that are equally as good, and you wonder which God wants you to go to. Let’s go back to what Jesus said earlier about the two greatest commandments: loving God and loving people. Can you love God and love other people at both colleges? If the answer is yes, then it doesn’t matter which you choose. God can use you at either place.

When it comes to our future decisions, God doesn’t always give us “yes” or “no” answers. That can seem confusing, but there’s a lot of freedom when you realize God’s plan for your life is more about who you’re becoming than what you’re doing.

Does that mean we just make all of our decisions on our own and live however we want? Of course not! We may not always know God’s will, but we can always walk in God’s ways. What does that mean? It means that even if we don’t know what’s next for our lives, we can continue to obey what God has called us to right now.

MORNING DEVOTION
Hebrews 5:7
In the days of His earthly life, Jesus offered up both [specific] petitions and [urgent] supplications [for that which He needed] with fervent crying and tears to the One who was [always] able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverent submission toward God [His sinlessness and His unfailing determination to do the Father’s will].

When Jesus taught His disciples how to pray to the Father, He told them that they were to “hallow” the God of the universe and His name. That means to reverence, worship, honor, and adore Him. Jesus reverenced His Father, and we need to do the same!

I don’t want you to miss this: God heard Jesus’s prayers because Jesus had a deep reverence for His Father.

My desire is for you to learn the powerful secrets of praying to our heavenly Father. We want God to answer our prayers, but we should also want to know why God will answer our prayers. Giving Him reverence as Jesus did is a big part of receiving those answers. It’s a foundational truth that you should not approach God casually without the reverence He deserves. Casual prayer is a mistake. I’m not saying we should be too afraid of God to approach Him. I am saying that we need to have the biblical fear that is defined as reverence for the God of the universe. Jesus gave His Father reverence and because Jesus did so, “God heard his prayers.”

How often do you take sixty or even thirty minutes just to minister to almighty God? How do you hallow or honor Him? What does this look like? You can open your heart and mind to the Almighty and bow in His presence. Confess His Holiness. Honor Him, worship Him, and magnify Him. Confess your sin to Him. Place Him on the throne of your life and humble yourself in His presence. He alone is the Most High God, and He alone is worthy. Worship Him with the words of your mouth, bless Him, and bow before Him. This is hallowing, honoring, and extolling God Almighty.

MORNING DEVOTION

The Bible tells us to never trust in material things. Just ask those who thought they were financially secure but then lost almost everything through an unforeseen change in the housing market.

There are many people who wake up in the morning rich but go to bed that same night financially ruined. Far better than putting their hope in material things that are temporary, they should have fixed their hope in God who is eternal.

Jesus said that He came to earth to bless us with an abundant life (John 10:10). It is through Him that all the promises of God are ours (2 Corinthians 1:20). Every single spiritual blessing is ours in Christ right now (Ephesians 1:3).

Why does the Lord give us richly all things to enjoy (1 Timothy 6:17)? He is our Father and loves His children. Like any loving earthly father, He wants to bless us. He also wants us to bless others and carry out His will here on earth.

Living a blessed life in Christ is a gift from the Father. It is truly an honor from Heaven. If the Lord has trusted you with a lot, remember to keep your eyes on Jesus and be faithful. Don’t ever think you are better than others just because much has been entrusted to you.

The truth is, God blessed you so that you could be a blessing to others. It's up to you to learn to see yourself as a steward of God. Your job is to look after and manage the blessings He has entrusted to you as He directs.

Not your will but His be done.

Today use the scriptures below to help stay in the place where God can trust you with many blessings. Ask Him daily how He wants you to use the things He has blessed you with to bless others.

MORNING DEVOTION

In Jeremiah 33:3 we get to see the Father's heart. He asks us to call to Him and He will answer us and show us great and mighty things that we did not know.

The deep things of God are revealed to us in His presence. It's when we take time to fellowship with Him consistently that He can show us those things that our eyes have not seen, nor our ears heard (1 Corinthians 2:9).

We see in Hebrews 11:6 that there are rewards for those who diligently seek God. This is not a casual pursuit but a continual longing to be with the Lord. It's a determined pursuit to spend time with Him.

As we fellowship with the Lord on a regular basis, He will trust us with more. As we spend time in His presence, He shows us what is on His heart.

The truth is, it takes effort to find the time and energy to step into His presence and connect with Him, as it does in any important relationship.

It's essential that you find ways to shut out the noise and put yourself in a position to hear from the Lord.

Use the scriptures below to help you step into God's presence. It is in this place of communion with the Lord that you will be dramatically touched and changed by Him.

In His presence is where we all truly long to be.

Bible Verses to Use to Step Into God's Presence
