(John 14: 25-29) Focus on (v27). It’s all very well to speak peace, but why is our social life and the world, so lacking in peace? Is it that we fail to listen to the Spirit’s whispers in our hearts and minds! Have your lives become so busy that we have lost the art of listening, of spending time alone just testing the way forward with Him? In the midst of ministering to vast crowds, Jesus took time to go to a quiet space to commune with the Father. Do we follow Jesus’ example in doing this? (v26) “Holy Spirit will teach you all things”. Jesus knew that the ‘prince of the world’ i.e Satan, had no hold on him. Equally he has hold of us only to the extent that we do not grasp the peace Jesus has left with us! We know that we are no longer in prison, but are restored in relation to God. God cares, God is moved. When we care we find peace!

Monday, 8 June
(Luke 16: 19-31) Did the rich man ever do anything bad to Lazarus? He seems to have been what we would call ‘respectable’. He even cared about his family! (v27-28) Lazarus lay at his gate, day by day. Did he ever speak to Lazarus? Ever give him a loaf of bread? Ointment for his sores? Water and soap to wash his sores? Did the rich man ever send one of his worn out linen garments to Lazarus? In other words did he even notice Lazarus enough o greet him? Didn’t God care? What did Jesus come to show humankind?

Tuesday, 9 June
(John 14: 15-21) Here we see what Jesus intended humankind to know, to grasp. Jesus through ‘another Counsellor’ is still with us. Who is this Counsellor? The Holy Spirit of the Father and the Son! But more than being with us forever, (v16) He will be in the believers, in us! In (v20) Jesus reveals that God is not far from us, not unattainable, not uncaring. God is in us, experiencing what we experience. He cares! He loves (v21). Spend time to let this sink in. be open to experience this as truth.

Friday, 5 June
(Deut 13: 12-18; 17: 2-7) Is this God we read about here, the same God we worship as Christians? The passion here is neither political nor hatred nor personal. The issue is purity, the holiness which has to be protected against the enemies of God’s holiness. Is such harshness the best way to gain friends? This is a question we may ask when we consider the recent attempts at exterminating each other in Middle East! Do these ‘laws’ reflect human interpretation as we see them in the written format, even if said to come from God! Contrast this with (Lev 19: 16b – 19a).

Saturday, 6 June
(1 Peter 2: 11-12, 21-23; Eph 5: 1-4) Is the Christians ethic still relevant in our age and time? It is now more than 2000 years since Jesus taught! Life in Palestine was very different to life today. There were now factories, machines, industries, over population … Jesus’ travels at most covered about 70 miles from his home! Cars, trains, and aeroplanes were not even a dream! Did Jesus teach how to travel, select factory-made things? Or did He teach principles? Christian ethics are about relationships” (Eph 5: 2) about love and the cost of love; (Eph 5: 3-4). Behaviour between man and man, men and women, man and woman with God. (1 Peter 2: 11-12) Here it is about our inner attitude and in (v21-23) the ground is set. We live according to Jesus’ teaching because he suffered for us and his attitude is an example for us to follow!

Sunday, 7 June
(Matt 25: 31-46) The crux of this parable is in (v34-35). How does this reflect upon the Christian ethic in relationship? What characterised the people on the right hand? How does this differ from the relationships in (v42-43). The answer lies in (v45). Here lies the problem: We live amongst hundreds of thousands of people within less than 70 miles of our homes! Up to 40% of them are in need. How can we feed, give water, hospitality and clothe all these people? Do we at least know what circumstances many of these persons experience? Have you ever been to where these needs are common? If you have, how have you felt – did you just want to get away? Or did you feel compassion and began to think how a difference could be made? John Wesley began Sunday Schools! Emily Hobhouse came, saw and approached those who were in control!

Wednesday, 3 June
(Deut 27: 1-3, 9-10, 14-26) Israel are a chosen people (v3, 9). But there is a condition for this closeness! The commandments (v14-26). Do you recognise these commands as the basics of law for most nations of our time? If these were effectively taught and implemented what a different situation we would have in South Africa in 2026! There would be no need for the multiple court cases of today, or for the HRC and gender violence cases or not? How does this compare to the 10 Commandments of Deut. 5?

Thursday, 4 June
(Lev 20: 26; 19: 2; 11: 44-45; 20: 7) One has to note the repeated use of the word ‘holy’. What does ‘being holy’ mean? Basically it means ‘different’. All these verses give one reason why the people had to be different: Because God is different, far different to any other; supremely so! Since Israel is God’s chosen people, they are to be different to any other people! Because the Jews belong to God, they too are to be different, different in every aspect of life. This applied to the food they eat, their relationships and form of worship. “Be holy because I, the Lord your God am holy”. Remember that Israel lived in close association with many pagan beliefs amongst the nations through which they moved. Are we Christians, called to be different from the world we live in?

Monday, 1 June
(Deut 7: 6-9; 9: 4-6) Why should the Israelites obey God? And why should we do so? Answering these questions is part of the study of ‘ethics’. In the Old testament sense, ‘ethics’ is the conformity of human activity to the will of God’. The will of God was revealed to them in various ways and was recorded as laws, to be obeyed. God rescued Israel from slavery in Egypt. He opened a way through the Red Sea for them. So law has its roots in God’s initiative, not through any quality of their own: It was not their numbers, their energy, their goodness! God made a promise to the Fathers: Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. It was out of God’s free, undeserved grace that He made a covenant with Israel; that they would he his people and He their God. As the receivers, Israel was obliged to live in a way worthy of God. It is a bad dog which bites the hand that feeds it! They did not choose God, God chose Israel. (Reference BARCLAY, W. Ethics in a Permissive Society. 1971)

Tuesday, 2 June
(Is. 54:5-10; 61: 10; Jer 2: 2; Hos 2: 19-20) In these passages we see Israel as the bride of God, both as Maker and Husband. So when Israel is unfaithful to God by following others God's, it is seen as adultery! (Hos 9: 1; Deut 31: 16-17) The Deut. Reading show how deceived a people can be: Israel did not look at themselves as the cause of their misfortune but instead they saw God as being unfaithful, “because our God is not with us”. Today, we sometimes hear people say, “God doesn’t care … so it’s no good praying”. People have not changed much in 5000 years, have they?

Thursday, 28 May
(1 Tim. 5: 17-25) Here Paul is still guiding not only Timothy but the whole church concerning its governance. Pauls seems to favour teaching and preaching more than other aspects (v17). In (v18) we find guidance for employers generally: Not to hold back wages form employees, and even see that they are fed and watered whilst working?! Partiality and prejudice is also to be avoided, there has to be fairness (v21). Ultimately all things are open to discovery, even if it takes a Madlanga Commission! God knows all things anyway, ever our heart motives!

Friday, 29 May
(1 Tim. 6: 1-2, 6-10) Is this showing approval of slavery? Does it justify slavery? Or is it talking about relationship? (v2a) Reread ch 1: 9-10 where slave trading is in the list of being contrary to sound doctrine! (See also Philemon (v10, 15-16)) Does remembering Onesemus, give another slant on our reading? What should the relationship be between an employer who is Christian and her Christian employee? In today’s world what role does financial riches and power play in people’s lives How does it affect their faith and their relationships? Does the ‘worship’ of money affect only the wealthy? Does that mean we should be indifferent to making a living?

Saturday, 30 May
(2 Tim 1: 1-12) Once again we are told of how Timothy came to be regarded by Paul as a son. Timothy is never far from Paul’s thoughts even though he was writing from prison in Rome (v3). Timothy is the son and grandson of two women noted elsewhere in scripture for their faith. That faith was passed on by them to Timothy (v5). Timothy has been given the godly gift of preaching and teaching by the laying on of hands by Paul (v6). Clearly Timothy was deeply moved at the time (v4). There is however a gift which is given to all believers, and it is not timidity, but one of power, love and self-discipline! How are we using these gifts? (Read (v9) We cannot hide behind our shyness, youth, lack of learning …! If we believe, we are immortal! (v10) In (v12) Paul sees his suffering as the result of being appointed as an apostle and teacher. He anticipates at the end to receive that immortal life promised by Jesus (v9).

Sunday, 31 May
(2 Tim. 2: 1-3) How does timothy need to cope with his heavy responsibilities (v1)? Can he share his burden? (v2) Then Paul, goes on with a number of illustrations of what it means to be focused on what God wants rather than with secular demands. Rules are there for a reason! The elderly Paul is not only imprisoned but he is chained up, restricting his movement. What may be blocking the spread of the Gospel in our time? But the Gospel is unfettered! Read (v11-13) meditatively and thoughtfully.

Wednesday, 27 May
(1 Tim. 3: 14- 4: 5) ‘Knowing how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household’ is something which children ‘catch’ by the example of their elders especially immediate family. Have you ever noticed how self conscious people become in the presence of non-swearers, when they are using rough language? So even adults ‘catch’ right behaviour. Why is this particularly true of the church? (v3: 15b) Indeed the way God works in his body, the church is a mystery, (v16) even as He gave us the Son, Jesus. In ch. 4 we see prophetic warning of a time of evil, such as the one we are living in now. We don’t pay much heed about not eating certain foods, but what about all the other things we are led into believing? Verse 4 is guidance for our time in making choices. Again, there is the role of prayer for discernment,

Tuesday, 26 May
(1 Tim. 2: 1-5, 3: 1-7) In this time when we see the world in turmoil under various present leaders, perhaps we should heed (1 Tim 2: 1-2) Do we pray enough, in concert as the church? In South Africa are we living peaceful and quiet lives when we look at the number of violent deaths? Amongst all levels of society? In ch 3 we read about the qualities of overseers or bishops. In the MCSA we also have overseers at lower levels such as Superintendents and even the Minister. We do have different orders within the church also. Very few people if any, measure up in every respect of (v4-7) yet they can strive to do so, with the help of the Spirit!
