*DO WELL AND BE ACCEPTED*

“Unto Cain and to his offering He had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. And the Lord said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted?”(Gen 4:5-7).

Cain’s ferocious face showed that he had not offered his sacrifice with a right spirit. It was not God Who was angry with Cain for not offering an acceptable offering, but Cain who was angry with God. It is the same with us. Very often we are annoyed because God has not answered our prayers or because He has delayed in answering them. We don’t examine ourselves to see whether we have prayed for the right thing or whether we have prayed in the right spirit.

“If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted?” From this we understand that Cain had not done well, and was hence not accepted. Though Cain offered an unacceptable offering, and was angry with God and obviously with his brother as well, God still showed His love and affection for him as a father would, and was ready to forgive him and accept him if he repented and did right.

What a compassionate God we have! The psalmist says, “He is slow to anger and plenteous in mercy” (Psa 103:8). How anxious He is that we should realize our faults and repent and return to Him! How eager He is to accept us, to receive us!🍞🍞

*WAY TO PROSPERITY*

Jehoiakim, the king of Judah, despised the word of God and destroyed it in the presence of the officials of the palace (Jer 36;22-27). As a result, the word of the Lord concerning him was; "He shall have none to sit upon the throne of David; and his dead body shall be cast out in the day to the heat, and in the night to the frost" (vs 30), "He shall be buried with the burial of an ass, drawn and cast forth beyond the gates of Jerusalem" (Jer 22:19).

Dear reader, you may not have thrown the Bible into the fire like Jehoiakim, but you may be neglecting reading it and meditating on it, thereby despising it. If we delight in God, as David did, we will delight in His Word too.

It appears as if the Lord had given Jehoiakim three years" time to bring forth fruit unto God. History records that in the third year of Jehoiakim's reign, Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon besieged Jerusalem (Dan 1:1,2). But it was only later that the Lord actually gave Jehoiakim into the hands of his enemies. He had not yielded fruit as expected of him by God, If we do not remain in God's hand, we will fall into the hands of our enemies. May the Lord grant us the grace to mediate on the Word of God and live by it, and not despise it or neglect it.

In contrast to Jehoiakim, Joshua was blessed because he mediated on the Word of God and observed to do all that is written therein (Josh 1:8). Indeed, we know how prosperous Joshua was. 'Blessed is the man ... his delight is in the law of the Lord ; and in His law doth he mediate day and night... whatsoever he doeth shall prosper" (Psa 1;2,3)

Dear reader would you be Joshua or a Jehoiakim?

*THE EDIFYING TONGUE*

When a person receives the Holy Spirit, God takes control of the tongue first - " The were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongued" (Acts 2:4) . Paul says,'he that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself' (I cor 14:4) This enlightens us to the fact that speaking in unknown tongues animates the speech centre to instruct all the nerves in the right disposition.

Our tongue has an influence on our heart -"Of the abundance of the HEART his mouth SPEAKETH" (Lk 6:45). "If any man among you seen to be religious , and bridleth not his TONGUE, but deceiveth his own HEART this man's religion is vain (Jms 1:6). "Let the WORDS OF MY MOUTH and the meditation of my HEART, be acceptable in THY sight, O Lord (Psa 19:14)

The tongue and the ear are connected too - 'The Lord God hath given me the TONGUE of the learned ... the Lord God hath opened mine EAR' (Isa 50:4,5) Also, in Isaiah 6:5-8 we see that as soon as the prophet's tongue was cleansed, he could hear the voice of God and his life was ready to obey the call of God. In other words, if you don't hear God's voice, it mean that your tongue needs cleansing.

"Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying , that it may minister grace unto the hearers" (Eph. 4:29). "Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt (not with hot chilli), that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man. (Col 4:6).

*AN AMAZING REQUEST*

*"He said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when Thou comest into Thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him,Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with Me in paradise" (Lk 23;42.43).*

Many believed on Christ when His ministry was at its peak. They saw His miracles- multiplying the loaves and fishes, healing those who came to Him of every kind of sickness and disease, raising the dead, etx. However, here is a man who accepted Jesus as his saviour at a time when our Lord was physically very weak and apparently could not even save Himself. He was bleeding and in great agony. He had been deserted by His own disciples and condemmed by his leaders, and He was being jeered at by the people. This malefactor was not converted on hearing a sermon or seeing a miracle, Many who saw Jesus miracles (some who even saw Him raise Lazarus from the dead), did not believe! But here is a hardened criminal putting his trust in Christ in His weakest human form!

Many came to Christ for their material needs- for food, healing, deliverance from evil spirits, and for relief from numerous other problems. The thief on the cross probably had greater physical needs than anyone else. He definitely needed healing in his lacerated bleeding body. He needed deliverance from his agonizing pains and from his imminent, hopeless death. Yet he asked Christ for none of those things. He asked for only spiritual salvation. all he asked for was that Jesus would remember him, that He would have mercy on him on the day of judgment. And of course, Jesus gave him 'more abundantly than he could ask or think." He asked for mercy for the remote future. Jesus gave him salvation 'TODAY'! He only asked that Jesus would' remember' him; Jesus replied.' Today shall thou be with Me in paradise!"

Dear reader, like this penitent thief, if you pray and seek things of eternal value, our Lord will do for you 'exceeding abundantly above all that you ask or think.

*WHY PRAYERS ARE HINDERED...!*

*"Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife... that your prayers be not hindered. Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous" ( I Pet 3:7,8)*

Many couples do not realize why their prayers sometimes go unanswered. From this text we learn that if the couple are not of one mind or if they do not dwell together in unity and harmony, their prayers will be hindered. Quite often, couples who fight, quarrel and argue, do not have family prayers because their spirits are not ready to pray together. You may say, "I pray alone," but that prayer may not go to God's presence.

How can the couple be of one mind? The above text says, "Be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another." Yes, that is the secret. The husband and wife can never be united if they think the other must be perfect in character. The wife may find various failures and mistakes in the husband's life and the husband may find mistakes in the wife. So they can have one mind only when they have compassion for each other. What is compassion? Compassion is a sympathetic feeling towards someone for his or her weak points, troubles, failures or drawbacks.. Instead of having sympathy, if you have a critical attitude towards the other's failures, you can never be of one mind and, as long as you are not of one mind your prayers are hindered.

This principle is applicable not only to married couples, but also to others. Dear reader, perhaps some of your prayers are not answered because you are not of one mind with others. Unless we are united with others, whether in the gospel work, in family life or in any other thing, and look at others with compassion rather than with a critical spirit, we cannot see God answering our prayers.

"Bind us together, Lord,
bind us together, Lord,
With cords that cannot be broken;
Bind us together, Lord,
bind us together, Lord,
Bind us together with love."

*ENJOY A CURSE FREE LIFE*

God made a beautiful garden out of the ground, but man's sins bought w**d and thorns into it. Sin produces thorns in your heart - natures that prick and hurt you, as well as others. Jesus wore a crown of thorns, taking this curse upon himself, so that you might not be a thorn.

"In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread". This is the first mention of sweat and bread. Before falling into sin man did not have to labour for food. He was happy with the fruits - for which no labour was necessary. But now he has to toil. Just as his heart had hardened after sinning, the ground too had become hard and now needed to be tilled.

The Lord wants us to be free from our worries about material things. He wants us to cast all our cares upon him. "Casting all your care upon him, for he careth for you" ( I Pet 5:7). The Lord has promised to worry on our behalf. So child of God, "Take no thought, saying, what shall we eat? Or, what shall we drink?, or wherewithal shall we be clothed?" ( Matt 6:31). It's the gentiles, who know not the Lord, who worry about such things.

Jesus paid a high price to earn for us a curse free life. Are we enjoying this new life, or are we still under the curse?

*LESSONS FROM A 'THIEF'*

*_"Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching" (Heb 10:25)._*

Here the 'day approaching' signifies the Coming of the Lord. What the writer of the epistle wanted to emphasize was that, as the Coming of the Lord is approaching, we should meet together and have fellowship with one another more than before. If this was so two thousand years ago how much more careful we should be now, not to neglect our meeting together in fellowship and worship, seeing we are in the last moments before the Coming of the Lord!

Once a young man named Jacob was going from one village to another village on a Sunday morning. He had to cross a forest. As he walked along a thief caught him and demanded all his money. Jacob pleaded with the thief asking him to release him as he had no money. The thief threatened to kill him if he did not hand over the money. Then Jacob again pleaded with him saying that he was a Pentecostal believer and did not tell lies. Immediately the thief took him by the throat and angrily said, "Then you ought to be in church now, this being a Sunday morning!" Jacob was cornered and had nothing to say. "Hereafter, will you regularly go to church?" demanded the thief. To this Jacob readily agreed. Then the thief asked, "Do you pay tithes?" Jacob was shocked. He hadn't expected a question like this from a thief. He had already said that, being a Pentecostal man he didn't tell lies. So he meekly said. "No, I don't pay tithes." The thief got very angry. Shaking him like a rabbit he shouted, "Hereafter, will you faithfully pay your tithes." He hurriedly agreed and the thief let him go. The next Sunday Jacob came to church and gave a testimony about this incident during the service. His life was changed and he later became a very good servant of God.

Do not wait to be caught by "the thief" before starting to go to church and paying your tithes.

*"THE RIGHT PLACE TO GIVE"*

The first man to give tithes was Abraham. No one taught him this truth. Obviously, he learned the grace and glory in giving, when the God of glory appeared to him (Gen 14:18-20).

Abraham gave tithes to Melchizedek, the priest of the most high God. We too should give tithes to Melchizedek i.e., to the priests or ministers of God who have consecrated themselves after the order of Melchizedek -"without father, without mother, without descent.."(Heb 7:3). Jesus taught this consecration to His disciples - "If any man come to Me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple” (Lk 14:26). THOSE WHO HAVE NOT THUS CONSECRATED THEMSELVES ARE NOT SCRIPTURALLY FIT TO RECEIVE TITHES.

Before Abraham gave tithes to Melchizedek, Melchizedek gave Abraham bread and wine (which is a type of giving Holy Communion). This shows that tithes should be given at the place where a believer worships and receives Holy Communion. Some think that tithes can be given where the need is most. But the Word of God says, "Unto the place which the Lord your God shall choose. . .thither ye shall bring...your tithes” (Deut 12:5,6).

Before Abraham gave tithes, he was blessed - Blessed be the most high God, Which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave Him tithes of all” (Gen 14:20). Our giving tithes is a sign of gratitude and an acknowledgement that God has blessed us and given us victory over our enemy, the devil.

One old man testified that the Lord blessed him so much after he started giving tithes that he gradually kept increasing his giving to the Lord from one-tenth to nine-tenths! "Bring ye all the tithes...and prove Me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it” (Malachi 3:10).

*SHOUT OF VICTORY*

*"By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compasses about seven days" (Heb 11:30).*

When we read the book of Joshua we may not clearly understand how the walls of Jericho fell down. It was not because of men who walked in front holding their weapons, or because of the priests who carried the ark and blew the trumpets, or because they walked seven days around the walls, or even because they finally shouted. The reason is mentioned here - "By faith the walls of Jericho fell down." If they did not have faith they wouldn't have gone round the walls or shouted. They did all these things by faith and God gave them the victory. The weapon that the Lord gave them to conquer the walls of Jericho, was the weapon of faith; against it there is no weapon in the world or in the underworld. "The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds" (II Cor 10:4). In these days too we need that mighty faith to pull down the strongholds of the enemy.

When the Lord wants to do mighty things in the land, the devil may raise up 'Jericho walls' to frighten and threaten God's people. We should not be shaken by the devices of the enemy; we should by faith sound the note of victory. Canaan is only for such people. Remember, the walked around the walls of Jericho for six days with seeing even a scratch appear on those huge walls. And on the seventh day, they walked seven times, about thirty five miles in all. By that time they might have been extremely exhausted. Perhaps they did not have any strength left to shout. If they hadn't had faith, doubt would have mounted in them and they would have thought,"All these seven days of walking so many times did not even make a scratch on the walls. Now, when we are physically weak, how can our shouting have any impact on them?" Their faith overcame all barriers.

Dear child of God, the Lord has given us the land; let us see it by faith and shout the victory. The Lord will do great things in those who believe; He will do great things through them.

*WHY, LORD?*

"The secret things belong unto the Lord our God" (Deut 29:29).

Many a time we ask why God allows sufferings. "What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter," Jesus told Peter (Jn 13:7).

One reason why God allows sufferings, is to make us humble, to make us small. God led the Israelites for forty years in the wilderness to humble them (Deut 8:2). When someone speaks evil of you, if you get angry, if you are hurt and unable to love that person, it is because of your pride! A hen can keep only a chick, and not another hen, under its wings. Unless we become small, God cannot keep us under His wings. We should not have any horns because we are going to fly. No flying bird has horns. Walk humbly with God.

Sufferings also help to change our character. (See Rom 5:3,4). 'Patience', in another translation, is 'character'. Our sufferings are doing a beautiful work in us, forming a beautiful character in us. Our sufferings give us inner strength. So we have sufferings, not because our God hates us, but because He loves us! You may be going through a dark narrow tunnel, but at the end of the tunnel you can see a light.

Don't stop in your Christian life because of your sufferings - keep pressing on! Those who endured sufferings joyfully and pressed on were really blessed in the end (eg. Abraham, David, etc). Those who do not like to suffer do not have a good end (eg.Lot, Saul, etc). Saul did not want to suffer. He did not praise God even once. King David suffered and had good end.

The end of our life should be glorious. If we grumble, murmur or get angry when we suffer, our sufferings will bring us no glory. THE LORD ALLOWS SUFFERINGS AND KEEPS WATCHING OUR ATTITUDE.

*DESPISE NOT YOUR HIGH CALLING...!*

Come now therefore, and let us slay him (Joseph), and cast him into some pit, and we will say, some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams" (Gen 37:20).

We all know that Joseph had dreams that reflected his great high calling.

God clearly showed him that he would have dominion over his brothers, and that his whole family would bow before him (Gen 37:7). When we look at the trials Joseph went through, we see that they were mostly attacks on his high calling. We read, "they hated him yet the more for his dreams" (Gen 37:8).

Do we realize that the devil hates us because of our high calling, and that he is all out to attack, not our material or physical life, but our heavenly vision (high calling)? Joseph was thrown into the pit to die a miserable death so that his dreams might not be fulfilled in his life. The devil, in his attempt to thwart God's high calling in our life, may throw us into a pit, into prison-like situations.

God called the people of Israel out of Egypt and promised to take them to a land flowing with milk and honey; but when they faced a trial in the wilderness they doubted their calling (Exo 14:11). They were called to Canaan, which is a type of heaven. Since they lost the vision of their calling, they died in the wilderness. Even in this age there are some in this world (which is like a wilderness), who are losing their heavenly vision and perishing miserably.

Let us not forget our high calling in the time of trials. Let us remember that in every trial the devil is watching to see what will become of our calling.
