When Holy Meets Unholy
"Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!" - Isaiah 6:5
Pause and sit with this verse for a moment.
Isaiah was a prophet. A man of God. He had a calling, a ministry, a reputation. But the moment he saw the real God, high and lifted up, with seraphim crying "Holy, holy, holy" he didn't stand up and boast. He didn't say, "Lord, thank You that I'm not like other people."
He crumbled. Let that sink in.
"Woe is me! I am a man of unclean lips."
WHAT IS ISAIAH REALLY SAYING?
1. He saw his own sin.
When you stand in the light of God's holiness, your own "goodness" disappears like morning mist. Isaiah didn't compare his deeds to others. He compared himself to God, and he lost. He didn't bring his status, his prophecies, or his good works. He brought his brokenness.
2. He saw the sin around him.
"I live among a people of unclean lips."
He realised that he was living in a broken and sinful world. The words we speak, the attitudes we develop, and the values we embrace can all be influenced by the environment around us. We are not isolated from the world. But we are not called to remain conformed to it.
3. His confession was triggered by revelation.
"Yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!"
This is the key. Isaiah didn't wake up feeling guilty one morning. He saw God's glory, and that exposure revealed his filth. It was the holiness of God that made him see the ugliness of his own sin.
THE POSTURE OF TRUE WORSHIP
This is where worship begins. Not with a song. Not with raised hands. Not with a polished performance on Sunday.
"Worship begins with a broken heart that says, 'Lord, I am not worthy.'"
ASK YOURSELF THIS:
When was the last time you truly saw yourself in the light of God's holiness?
Not when you compared yourself to your neighbour.
Not when you thought, "Well, at least I'm not as bad as that person."
When was the last time you said, "God, I am lost without You"?
Because if you can still walk into church or scroll through your phone without feeling the weight of your own unworthiness before a holy God, you haven't truly seen Him.
The problem is not that we sin too much. The problem is that we think too highly of ourselves and too lowly of God.
Isaiah's story doesn't end at verse 5! Right after his confession, a seraph flew to him with a live coal from the altar, touched his lips, and said: "Your guilt has departed, and your sin is blotted out."
The same God who exposes your sin is the God who cleanses it.
You don't have to stay in your shame. Bring your "unclean lips" to Him today. Admit your sin. Stop pretending. Stop performing.
And watch Him do what only He can do, make you white as snow.
LET US PRAY
My Lord, I confess that I am a person of unclean lips.
I have spoken words that hurt. I have stayed silent when I should have spoken truth. I have compared myself to others instead of looking at Your holiness.
Please, cleanse me. Show me Your glory, not to terrify me, but to transform me. I confess that I am lost without You.
Like Isaiah, I say: "Here I am; send me."
Amen.
