Our Lady of Lourdes
The Holy Virgin Mary appeared to a 14-year-old girl named Bernadette Soubirous on February 11, 1858, at a rock cave in Massabielle, Lourdes, France. This first apparition occurred while Bernadette was gathering firewood with her sisters. After this initial encounter, Mary appeared to Bernadette multiple times: on February 14, 18, 19, 20, 21, 23, 24, 25, 27, and 28, as well as March 1, 2, 3, 4, and 25, and April 7 and 16 in 1858. The most significant apparition took place on March 25, when Mary revealed her identity, stating, "I am the Immaculate Conception." This title refers to the Catholic belief that Mary was conceived without original sin.
Mary appeared to Bernadette dressed in a white robe with a blue sash around her waist, the uniform of a religious group called "Children of Mary," a group Bernadette could not join due to her poverty. Bernadette described Mary as "a tiny maiden," emphasizing her modest and gentle appearance. During one of the apparitions, Mary asked Bernadette to dig into the ground, where a spring of fresh water miraculously appeared. This water is believed to have healing properties and has since provided miraculous cures for many who were seriously ill. The site quickly became a focal point for pilgrims, but local authorities initially fenced off the grotto, turning the situation into a national issue. On October 4, 1858, Emperor Napoleon III ordered the reopening of the grotto, and it has remained a sacred pilgrimage destination ever since.
The apparitions were officially approved by the Catholic Church on January 18, 1862, affirming their authenticity. Bernadette, born in 1844, later joined a religious order as a nun. She led a devout and humble life until her death on April 16, 1879. Remarkably, her body did not deteriorate after her death, a phenomenon considered miraculous by many. Bernadette was beatified on June 6, 1925, by Pope Pius XI and canonized as a saint on December 8, 1933, by the same pope.
