EK VRA, MAAR EK KRY NIE

Jak 4:2-3… 2Julle wil dinge hê wat julle nie het nie, en pleeg dan moord om dit te kry. Julle is jaloers oor wat ander het, en as julle dit nie in die hande kan kry nie, veg en baklei julle om dit by hulle te vat. En eintlik is die rede hoekom julle nie het wat julle wil hê nie, die feit dat julle God nie daarvoor vra nie.3En selfs wanneer julle vra, kry julle dit nie omdat julle motiewe verkeerd is – julle wil goed hê net om dit self te geniet.
Op soveel plekke in die Bybel word ons aangemoedig om te vra en op soveel plekke sien ons dat God Sy kinders se gebede beantwoord het. Tog is hier duidelik ‘n klomp wie se gebede NIE beantwoord word nie. Ja, Jakobus praat wel met ‘n klomp Christene, maar hulle is jaloers op mekaar en veg onder mekaar. God kan Homself tog nie “belaglik” maak deur uitkoms op diésulkes se gebede te gee nie. Ander mense wat hierdie dalk “van buite” aanskou, sal Hom nie as heilig ag nie.
God antwoord opregte gebede. Wanneer ons so na Hom toe gaan, sorg Hy dat ons beproewings ons nie sal verslaan nie en stap Hy saam met ons DEUR ons swaarkry. God moedig ons aan om te vra, maar nie om ons eie plesiersoekende begeertes te vervul nie. Daar is ‘n geveg “rondom ons” en ook “in ons” en ons het Sy hulp nodig. Vra opreg en Hy sal help.
Vader, veral wanneer ek na ander kyk, kom daar maklik jaloesie en begeertes by my op. Ek kan sien dat dit nie tot opbouing van myself in U strek nie, nog minder eer dit U. U saak is met my, om my meer soos Jesus te maak. Ek wil opreg voor U leef sodat wanneer ek U iets vra en U antwoord, dit ook volgens U wil en tot U eer sal wees.

I PRAY BUT I DO NOT RECEIVE

Jam. 4:2-3… 2You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.

Often we are encouraged to ask, and in so many instances we see that God indeed answers His children. However, in this passage it is clear that a number of people’s prayers were NOT answered. Yes, James was speaking to a number of Christians who were jealous and were quarrelling with one another. Surely God could not make Himself “a laughing matter” by answering their prayers. People viewing this from the “outside” would not have seen Him as holy.

God does answer honest prayers. When we go to Him in faith and meekness, He ensures that we will not be overcome by our troubles and He will walk with us all the way through our sufferings. God encourages us to ASK, but not to fulfil our own pleasure seeking desires. We are in a fight, both “in” and “around” us and we need to ask for His help. Ask Him in modesty and He will answer.

Father, when I look at others it is so easy to become jealous and have all sorts of desires. I see that it is neither building my character, nor does it honor You. Your concern is with me, to make me to be more like Jesus. I want to live in such a way before You that should I ask something, it will be according to Your will and to Your honor.

KEN ONS HOM?

Hos 4:6…6My volk word verwoes omdat hulle My nie ken nie. Omdat jyself dié kennis verwerp het, verwerp Ek jou as my priester. Omdat jy die voorskrifte van jou God vergeet het, sal Ek jou kinders vergeet …
Hos. 6:6…6Ek soek troue liefde en nie offers nie; toewyding aan God en nie brandoffers nie.
God wys met ‘n uiters duidelike voorbeeld vir die volk hoe Hosea vir sy “prostituut vrou” omgee – dít is hoe lief Hy ons almal het. Israel wou dit nie ter harte neem nie en daarom was dit hulle voorland om weggevoer te word na ‘n ander land onder heerskappy van ‘n vyand, waar hul NIE wou wees nie. En die rede daarvoor – hulle het ‘n “gebrek aan kennis”. Dit beteken nie om “dinge te weet” nie, maar dat hulle “God nie persoonlik ken” nie. Hulle het nog nooit na Hom toe gekeer om persoonlik deur Hom onderrig te word nie.
Ons weet dat die wyse man en vrou na God sal SOEK en groot vreugde en hoop daaruit sal put. Die dwaas haat en minag hierdie “persoonlike kennis” van God en sal maar saam met hulle wat losbandig lewe, eindig. Daar is NIKS beter op aarde as om Hom persoonlik te ken nie. Hy laat ons Sy weë verstaan, Hy gee geestelike insig. God stel nie belang in ons “goed” nie, Hy wil “ons” hê – God wil jou “hart” hê!
Here, ek wil U persoonlik ken, ek wil sekuur in U weë wandel. Ek begeer om te weet wat U wil in elke situasie is sodat ek daarvolgens kan vra en dit doen. En Here, mag almal om my U ook leer ken. Ons Here, “ons” loof U vir U groot liefde.

DO WE KNOW HIM?

Hos. 4:6, 6:6… 6My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.
Hos. 6:6… 6For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

By using Hosea’s love and care for his immoral wife as an example for the people, God shows us how He loves us and cares for us. Israel had not taken it to heart and the result was that they were taken into exile, being under an enemy where they did not want to be. And this is the reason: They had a “lack of knowledge”. It does not mean “not knowing about things” but that they did not “know God personally”, and they did not turn to Him to be taught by Him in person.

We know that the wise man and woman SEEK God and they will get much joy and hope from that. The fool despises “knowing God personally” and will end up with the immoral. There is NOTHING better than to know Him. He makes us walk in His ways, He makes us understand, and He gives spiritual insight. God is not interested in our “stuff”. He wants “us”, He wants our hearts!

Lord, I want to know You personally, I want to walk squarely in Your ways. I desire to know Your will for every situation so that I can act accordingly. And Lord, may everybody around me also get to know You. Our Lord, “we” praise You for Your great love.

‘N TONG WAT VLAMME UITSPUUG!

Jak 3:6-8…6Die tong is ook ’n vuur. Dit is vol dinge wat jou verhouding met God kan bederf. Dit kan jou hele lewe in vlamme laat opgaan, want die duiwel steek dit aan …
Jakobus was ‘n praktiese man en hy sê dat die duiwel kan maak dat jou tong bitsig vlamme uitspuug, met verskriklike gevolge van ongeregtigheid en een ding wat ná ‘n ander sal volg. Ook moet ons weet dat die woorde wat ons spreek, soos ‘n tronk vir onsself kan word – vasgevang in mislukkings en skaamte – MAAR ek en jy HET ook Heilige Gees. Nie net kan Heilige Gees ons omstandighede verander nie, maar ook ons tonge voortreflik en versoenend maak.
Ja, my tong sal God eerstens loof. My tong sal bemoedig, versterk en ander vertel waar hulle hoop, liefde en genade verniet kan kry. Dit is wat Jesus met my tong doen, maar nogtans sal ek versigtig wees vir die duiwel se pogings om my tong te laat “gly”.
Dankie, Here, vir my tong, vir die positiewe wat ek kan spreek, vir lofliedere en om ook geregtigheid te kan uitroep. Here, bewaar ons daarvan om ons tonge te misbruik.

A TONGUE THAT SPEWS FLAMES!

Jam. 3:6-7… 6And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell …

James was a practical man. He said that the devil can cause your tongue to spew out flames, with terrible consequences and much unrighteousness as a result. Likewise, we should be aware that the words we speak may lock us into our own prison - created by ourselves - caught up in shame and failure. HOWEVER, you and I have Holy Spirit, who cannot only change our circumstances, but can also beautify our tongues and make them tools of reconciliation.

Yes, my tongue will firstly praise God. My tongue will encourage, bless, strengthen and tell people where to get love, hope and grace – for free. That is what Jesus does with my tongue. Yet, I will be careful, for the devil would like to make my tongue slip.

Thank you, Lord, for my tongue, for the beauty that I can speak, for songs of praise that I can sing and that I can proclaim righteousness. Lord, protect us from misusing our tongues.

GOD IS SO FORGIVING

Hosea 2:19-20… 19And I will betroth you to me forever. I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy. 20I will betroth you to me in faithfulness. And you shall know the Lord.

God blessed Israel and they were prosperous. During their prosperity they went astray and served foreign gods and idols. Then God wanted to show them to what lengths He would go in order for them to return to Him. He asked the prophet Hosea to marry an immoral woman, who disgraced him by her adulterous relationships, and ran away and sold herself. Hosea “bought” her back from her terrible situation and cleansed her.

Hosea’s love for her is a mirror image of God’s love for all mankind, including us. God’s beautiful words of how He lovingly ties us to Him, are still true – why would we trample on this love? You should, however, realize that if you persist in your arrogant ways a day will come when God will say: “Enough is enough!”

Father, Your love is so amazing. Even if we have been stubborn and did things on purpose, You still gave us a second chance. Lord, we think it just when someone is punished for his wrongdoing. Yet Your “righteousness” is forgiveness for anyone the moment they return to You. Lord, You are so merciful, and Your love so great – thank you.

GOD IS SO VERGEWENSGESIND

Hos 2:18-19…18Ek sal jou my vrou maak vir altyd. Ek sal jou aan My vasbind deur regverdigheid en geregtigheid, getroue liefde en deernis.19Ek sal getrou aan jou bly en jou Myne maak, en jy sal uiteindelik vir My ken as die Here.
God seën Israel en dit gaan baie voorspoedig met hulle. In hierdie voorspoed raak hulle tog die pad byster en hardloop agter afgryslike afgode aan. God wil vir hulle wys tot watter uiterstes Hy sal gaan om hulle weer terug te wen. Hy laat die profeet Hosea met ‘n immorele vrou trou, wat hom met haar buite-egtelike verhoudings verneder, wegloop en haarself verkoop. Hosea “koop” haar weer uit haar ellendige toestand terug en was haar skoon.
Hosea se liefde vir haar weerspieël God se liefde vir die hele mensdom, ons ingesluit. God se mooi woorde oor hoe Hy ons in verbondsliefde en deernis aan Hom vasbind, is nog steeds net so waar. So waarom sou ons hierdie liefde wou vertrap? Moet egter nie steeds aanhou om dit te vertrap nie, want God gaan op ‘n dag sê: “Genoeg is genoeg.”
Vader, U liefde vir ons is so groot. Al het ons soms hardkoppig en doelbewus verkeerd opgetree, gee U ons nog steeds tweede kanse. Here, vir ons behels geregtigheid wanneer iemand vir sy verkeerde dade moet boet, maar “U geregtigheid” is vergifnis vir hulle wat na U sou terugkeer. Here, U is wonderbaar – U liefde is so groot. Dankie vir U liefde.

THE ROYAL LAW

Jam. 2:8-9… 8If you really fulfil the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. 9But if you show partiality, you are committing sin …

John said that Christians would be recognized by their love for one another. Jesus said we must love God and our neighbor as ourselves. Paul taught us that if we do not love our fellow man then we cannot love God. James called the love for our neighbor the “Royal law according to Scripture”. This seems quite important to me.

This “Royal law of love” is the Law of Christ, way more important than all the other laws put together. It is an entirely upgraded law and when we apply it with the guidance of Holy Spirit – there is no other way – then we are doing exactly the best thing. It is THE BEST GUIDELINE from Holy Spirit for ALL our actions!

Lord, this “love thing” is what initially brought me to You. I do not know why You love me so much, for there were a few nasty things in me. And Lord, besides Your love there were a number of Your other children who loved me and showed real compassion. I also want to be like that.

DIE KONINKLIKE WET

Jak 2:8-9…8Julle doen inderdaad die regte ding as julle God se koninklike wet uitleef soos dit in die Skrif staan: “Jy moet jou naaste liefhê soos jouself.”9Maar as julle teen mense diskrimineer, doen julle sonde,…
Johannes sê Christene sal aan hulle liefde vir mekaar geken word. Jesus sê ons moet God liefhê en ons naaste soos onsself. Paulus het geleer dat as jy nie jou naaste liefhet nie, jy God nie kan liefhê nie. Jakobus noem hierdie liefde vir jou medemens “’n Koninklike wet volgens die Skrif”. Dit lyk vir my nogal belangrik.
Hierdie “Koninklike wet van liefde” is die wet van Jesus, veel belangriker as al die ander wette saam. Dit is ‘n heeltemal opgegradeerde wet en wanneer jy dit met Heilige Gees se leiding toepas (daar is NIE ‘n ander manier nie,) dan doen jy dit in alle opsigte reg. Dit IS die BESTE RIGLYN van Heilige Gees vir AL ons handelinge.
Here, dit is hierdie “liefde ding” wat my na U toe laat kom het. Ek weet nie mooi hoekom U my so liefhet nie, want daar was maar ‘n paar lelike goed in my. En Here, buiten U liefde was daar ook nog van U kinders wat my met ware sorg en liefde omarm het. Ek wil ook só wees, deurentyd.
